Book excerpt: In our increasingly mobile world the ability to access information on demand at any time and place can satisfy people's information needs as well as confer on them a competitive advantage. The emergence of battery-operated, low-cost and portable computers such as palmtops and PDAs, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless networks, have made possible the potential for ubiquitous computing. Through the wireless networks, portable equipments will become an integrated part of existing distributed computing environments, and mobile users can have access to data stored at information servers located at the static portion of the network even while they are on the move. Traditionally, information is retrieved following a request-response model. However, this model is no longer adequate in a wireless computing environment. First, the wireless channel is unreliable and the bandwidth is low compared to the wired counterpart. Second, the environment is essentially asymmetric with a large number of mobile users accessing a small number of servers. Third, battery-operated portable devices can typically operate only for a short time because of the short battery lifespan. Thus, clients are expected to be disconnected most of the time. To overcome these limitations, there has been a proliferation of research efforts on designing data delivery mechanisms to support wireless computing more effectively. Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments focuses on such mechanisms. The purpose is to provide a thorough and comprehensive review of recent advances on energy-efficient data delivery protocols, efficient wireless channel bandwidth utilization, reliable broadcasting and cache invalidation strategies for clients with long disconnection time. Besides surveying existing methods, this book also compares and evaluates some of the more promising schemes.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Data dissemination among wireless devices is an essential application in wireless networks. In contrast to its wired counterparts which have more stable network settings, wireless networks are subject to network dynamics, such as variable network topology, channel availability and capacity, which are due to user mobility, signal collision, random channel fading and scattering, etc. Network dynamics complicate the protocol design for optimal data disseminations. Although the topic has been intensively discussed for many years, existing solutions are still not completely satisfactory, especially for stochastic or arbitrary networks. In this thesis, we address optimal data dissemination in both stochastic and arbitrary wireless networks, using techniques of Lyapunov optimization, graph theory, network coding, multi-resolution coding and successive interference cancellation. We first discuss the maximization of time-averaged throughput utility over a long run for unicast and multirate multicast, respectively, in stochastic wireless networks without probing into the future. For multi-session unicast communications, a utility-maximizing cross-layer design, composed of joint end-to-end rate control, routing, and channel allocation, is proposed for cognitive radio networks with stochastic primary user occupations. Then, we study optimal multirate multicast to receivers with non-uniform receiving rates, also making dynamic cross-layer decisions, in a general wireless network with both a timevarying topology and random channel capacities, by utilizing random linear network coding and multi-resolution coding. In both solutions, we assume users are selfish and prefer only to relay data for others with strong social ties. Such social selfishness of users is a new constraint in network protocol design. Its impact on efficient data dissemination in wireless networks is largely unstudied, especially under stochastic settings. Lyapunov optimization is applied in our protocol design achieving close-to-optimal utilities. Next, we turn to latency-minimizing data aggregation in wireless sensor networks having arbitrary network topologies under the physical interference model. Different from our effort for stochastic networks where we target at time-averaged optimality over a long run, the objective here is to minimize the time-span to accomplish one round of aggregation scheduling for all sensors in an arbitrary topology. This problem is NP-hard, involving both aggregation tree construction and collision-free link scheduling. The current literature mostly considers the protocol interference model, which has been shown to be less practical than the physical interference model in characterizing the interference relations in the real world. A distributed solution under the physical interference model is challenging since cumulative interferences from all concurrently transmitting devices need to be well measured. In this thesis, we present a distributed aggregation protocol with an improved approximation ratio as compared with previous work. We then discuss the tradeoff between aggregation latency and energy consumption for arbitrary topologies when the successive interference cancellation technique is in force. Book excerpt: With the increasing popularization of personal hand-held mobile devices, more people use them to establish network connectivity and to query and share data among themselves in the absence of network infrastructure, creating mobile social networks (MSNet). Since users are only intermittently connected to MSNets, user mobility should be exploited to bridge network partitions and forward data. Currently, data route/forward approaches for such intermittently connected networks are commonly "store-carry-and-forward" schemes, which exploit the physical user movements to carry data around the network and overcome path disconnection. And since the source and destination may be far away from each other, the delay for the destination to receive the data from the source may be long. MSNets can be viewed as one type of socially-aware delay tolerant networks (DTNs). Observed from social networks, the contact frequencies are probably different between two friends and two strangers, and this difference should be taken into consideration when designing data dissemination and query schemes in MSNets. In this book, the fundamental concepts of MSNets are introduced including the background, key features and potential applications of MSNets, while also presenting research topics, such as, MSNets as realistic social contact traces and user mobility models. Because the ultimate goal is to establish networks that allow mobile users to quickly and efficiently access interesting information, particular attention is paid to data dissemination and query schemes in subsequent sections. Combined with geography information, the concepts of community and centrality are employed from a social network perspective to propose several data dissemination and query schemes, and further use real social contact traces to evaluate their performance, demonstrating that such schemes achieve better performance when exploiting more social relationships between users.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates both theoretical and practical aspects of the design and analysis of modern error-control coding schemes, namely low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and rateless codes for unequal error protection (UEP). It also studies the application of modern error-control codes in efficient data dissemination in wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks. Two methodologies for the design and analysis of UEP-LDPC codes are proposed. For these proposed ensembles, density evolution formulas over the binary erasure channel are derived and used to optimize the degree distribution of the codes. Furthermore, for the first time, rateless codes that can provide UEP are developed. In addition to providing UEP, the proposed codes can be used in applications for which unequal recovery time is desirable, i.e., when more important parts of data are required to be recovered faster than less important parts. Asymptotic behavior of the UEP-rateless codes under the iterative decoding is investigated. In addition, the performance of the proposed codes is examined under the maximum-likelihood decoding, when the codes have short to moderate lengths. Results show that UEP-rateless codes are able to provide very low error rates for more important bits with only a subtle loss in the performance of less important bits. Moreover, it is shown that given a target bit error rate, different parts of the information symbols can be decoded after receiving different numbers of encoded symbols. This implies that information can be recovered in a progressive manner, which is of interest in many practical applications such as media-on-demand systems. This work also explores fundamental research problems related to applying error-control coding such as rateless coding to the problem of reliable and energy-efficient broadcasting in multihop wireless ad-hoc sensor networks. The proposed research touches on the four very large fields of wireless networking, coding theory, graph theory, and percolation theory. Based on the level of information that each node has about the network topology, several reliable and energy-efficient schemes are proposed, all of which are distributed and have low complexity of implementation. The first protocol does not require any information about the network topology. Another protocol, which is more energy efficient, assumes each node has local information about the network topology. In addition, this work proposes a distributed scheme for finding low-cost broadcast trees in wireless networks. This scheme takes into account various parameters such as distances between nodes and link losses. This protocol is then extended to find low-cost multicast trees. Several schemes are extensively simulated and are compared.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Commercial providers are increasingly permitting third-parties to develop and implement their own applications on wireless devices, ranging from sensors to 3G cellular phones. Accordingly, reliable data dissemination is quickly emerging as a key enabling technology, providing fundamental services such as over-the-air programming and security patching. The commonly high density of wireless devices hampers efficient accomplishment of this task, however. In this dissertation, we address the scalability of reliable data dissemination in two ways: (i) we develop and analyze policies harnessing the multi-channel transceiving capabilities of single radio wireless devices, and (ii) we rigorously address the problem of quantifying forward error correction (FEC) redundancy to eliminate control traffic (e.g., Acknowledgments) with high probability. We first analyze the performance limits of data dissemination in multi-channel, single radio networks. For arbitrary topology networks, we model this problem as a stochastic shortest path optimization and provide approaches to compute the optimal control policy achieving minimum average delay, in a finite number of steps. Due to the prohibitive computational complexity of the optimal solution, we develop asymptotically optimal polices for practical networks with high node density. Our analysis and simulations reveal that a single radio in each receiver suffices to achieve performance gain directly proportional to the number of channels available. Next, pairing rateless coding with extreme value theory, we quantify FEC redundancy by analyzing the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the data dissemination completion time. We precisely characterize this CDF and demonstrate the existence of a phase transition associated with it. Further, we analyze heterogeneous packet loss models, by establishing a connection to the multi-set coupon collector problem. Finally, we address the problem of performing online FEC estimation under unknown channel statistics. Leveraging properties of extreme value estimators, we design novel techniques that extrapolate over limited information. We demonstrate the benefit of accurately quantifying FEC redundancy through real experiments, which reveal drastic reduction in control traffic, energy consumption and overall delay. In summary, this work contributes to the design and analysis of rapid and energy-efficient data dissemination protocols for large scale wireless networks, thereby facilitating their deployment.
