Book Reliable Data Delivery in Event Driven Wireless Sensor Networks

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protocols for sensor networks have traditionally been designed using the best effort delivery model. However, there are many specific applications that need a reliable data dissemination protocol. We present a protocol for efficient and reliable data delivery to all sensor nodes in an energy-constrained, event-driven sensor network in which nodes are mobile or static. The new protocol, SPROID (Scalable Protocol for RObust Information Dissemination), identifies data generated by a unique tag, uses content tables for faster dissemination of information and guarantees reliable dissemination to all nodes in the network within a finite time. SPROID can be made to work with any kind of physical layer requirements, but we focus on the case of a single-channel broadcast medium. Simulations results show that SPROID achieves complete data dissemination in shorter time and with more energy efficiency than SPIN (sensor network protocols using information negotiation).

Book Reliable Bulk Data Dissemination in Sensor Networks

Download or read book Reliable Bulk Data Dissemination in Sensor Networks written by Leijun Huang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wireless sensor network consists of a large number of resource-constrained sensor nodes that are self-organized into a multi-hop network and cooperate on a single task. In many situations, sensor networks need to run for a long time once deployed. When the environment changes during their lifetime, updating the code image or application data at the node for a new task becomes necessary, thus making data dissemination a critical issue where a large data object needs to be reliably propagated to all of the nodes in a network. While most of the current sensor nodes are equipped with a multiple-channel radio, the existing data dissemination approaches such as Deluge [1] do not take advantage of multiple channels. Moreover, these approaches mostly focus on the object delivery latency, while energy efficiency is also very important due to the resource constraints of the sensor nodes. This dissertation proposes three novel protocols for reliable bulk data dissemination, named McTorrent, CORD and McCORD, that focus on both object delivery latency and energy efficiency. These protocols use multiple channels, or a core-based two-phase approach, or both techniques to reduce object delivery latency and energy consumption at each node. The results from experiments on both indoor and outdoor testbeds and extensive simulations in various scenarios show that these protocols significantly reduce the latency and/or energy consumption, compared to the existing approaches"--Abstract.

This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routing and clustering for wireless sensor networks (WSN) play a significant role for reliable and energy efficient data dissemination. Although these research areas attract a lot of interest lately, there is still no holistic approach that is able to meet the requirements and challenges of many different applications and network scenarios, like various network sizes and topologies, multiple mobile data sinks, or node failures. The main goal of this work is to demonstrate that machine learning is a practical approach to a range of complex distributed problems in WSNs. Showing this will open up new paths for development at all levels of the communication stack. To achieve this goal we present a robust, energy-efficient, and flexible data dissemination framework consisting of the routing protocol FROMS and the clustering protocol Clique. Both are based on reinforcement learning, and exhibit vital properties such as robustness against mobility, node and link failures, fast recovery after failures, very low control overhead and a wide variety of supported network scenarios and applications. Both protocols are fully distributed and have minimal communication overhead.

This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fast developing research area with many new exciting applications arising, ranging from micro climate and environmental monitoring through health and structural monitoring to interplanetary communications. At the same time researchers have invested a lot of time and effort into developing high performance energy efficient and reliable communication protocols to meet the growing challenges of WSN applications and deployments. However, some major problems still remain: for example programming, planning and deploying sensor networks, energy efficient communication, and dependability under harsh environmental conditions. Routing and clustering for wireless sensor networks play a significant role for reliable and energy efficient data dissemination. Although these research areas have attracted a lot of interest lately, there is still no general holistic approach that is able to meet the requirements and challenges of many different applications and network scenarios, like various network sizes and topologies, multiple mobile data sinks, or node failures. The current state-of-the-art is rich in specialized routing and clustering protocols, which concentrate on one or a few of the above problems, but perform poorly under slightly different network conditions. The main goal of this thesis is to demonstrate that machine learning is a practical approach to a range of complex distributed problems in WSNs. Showing this will open up new paths for development at all levels of the communication stack. To achieve our goal we contribute a robust, energy-efficient, and flexible data dissemination framework consisting of a routing protocol called \froms and a clustering protocol called Clique. Both protocols are based on Q-Learning, a reinforcement learning technique, and exhibit vital properties such as robustness against mobility, node and link failures, fast recovery after failures, very low control overhead and a wide variety of supported netw.

Book Efficient Multi resolution Data Dissemination in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Efficient Multi resolution Data Dissemination in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Jian Chen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large-scale distributed wireless sensor network is composed of a large collection of small low-power, unattended sensing devices equipped with limited memory, processors, and short-range wireless communication. The network is capable of controlling and monitoring ambient conditions, such as temperature, movement, sound, light and others, and thus enable smart environments. Energy efficient data disseminationis one of the fundamental services in large-scale wireless sensor networks. Based on the study of the data dissemination problem, we propose two efficient data dissemination schemes for two categories of applications in large-scale wireless sensor networks. In addition, our schemes provide spatial-based multi-resolution data dissemination for some applications to achieve further energy efficiency. Analysis and simulation results are given to show the performance of our schemes in comparison with current techniques.

Book Guide to Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Guide to Wireless Sensor Networks written by Sudip Misra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In WSNs, communication takes place with the help of spatially distributedautonomoussensornodesequippedtosensespeci?cinformation. WSNs, especially the ones that have gained much popularity in the recent years, are, ty- cally, ad hoc in nature and they inherit many characteristics/features of wireless ad hoc networks such as the ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning, and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-con?gure without the involvement of a centralized network manager, router, access point, or a switch. These features help to set up WSNs fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a ?xed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief - erations. WSNs ?nd a variety of applications in both the military and the civilian population worldwide such as in cases of enemy intrusion in the battle?eld, object tracking, habitat monitoring, patient monitoring, ?re detection, and so on. Even though sensor networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to coverage and deployment, scalability, quality-of-service, size, computational power, energy ef?ciency, and security.

Book Reliable and Energy efficient Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Reliable and Energy efficient Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Feng Wang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted significant attentions from both academia and industry, and are widely proposed for a broad range of applications, where data collection is often a core service to facilitate sensed data being forwarded to a central base station for further processing. Powered by batteries and using wireless communications, a WSN is more flexible than its wired counterpart. However, wireless losses/collisions may be prevalent when nodes communicate with each other. Moreover, the lifetime of a WSN largely depends on that of individual nodes, which is further constrained by the generally non-replenishable batteries. Energy-efficiency thus becomes a critical concern that must be addressed. In practice, using WSNs for data collection can be broken into three major stages, namely, deployment, message dissemination and data delivery. The deployment stage focuses on best deploying the network in the sensing field. In the message dissemination stage, network setup/management and/or collection command messages are disseminated from the base station to all sensor nodes, where the challenges lie in how to disseminate messages with low transmission costs and latencies in the presence of error-prone wireless communications. The data delivery stage fulfills the main task of data collection. Based on the information indicated by the message dissemination stage, sensed data are gathered at different nodes and delivered to the base station, with application-specified Quality-of-Service requirements to be fulfilled. In this thesis, we tackle the design issues for each of these stages. For the deployment stage, we propose to use relay nodes for traffic relaying and suggest that the deployment should be aware of the data traffic to be collected by specific applications. We then discuss how to efficiently disseminate message in a low duty-cycle scenario, where nodes alternate between active and dormant states to conserve energy and thus extend the network lifetime. To address the traffic accumulation problem, particularly in the data delivery stage, we take a case study on high-rise structure monitoring application and propose to use elevators to facilitate data collection. Our analysis and experimental results offer systematic solutions toward reliable and energy-efficient data collection by WSNs.
