Download or read book Fluid Structure Interaction II written by Hans-Joachim Bungartz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), i.e., the interplay of some moveable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid, are among the most widespread and most challenging coupled or multi-physics problems. Although much has been accomplished in developing good computational FSI methods and despite convincing solutions to a number of classes of problems including those presented in this book, there is a need for more comprehensive studies showing that the computational methods proposed are reliable, robust, and efficient beyond the classes of problems they have successfully been applied to.This volume of LNCSE, a sequel to vol. 53, which contained, among others, the first numerical benchmark for FSI problems and has received considerable attention since then, presents a collection of papers from the "First International Workshop on Computational Engineering - special focus FSI," held in Herrsching in October 2009 and organized by three DFG-funded consortia. The papers address all relevant aspects of FSI simulation and discuss FSI from the mathematical, informatical, and engineering perspective.

Book Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian and Fluid Structure Interaction

Download or read book Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian and Fluid Structure Interaction written by M'hamed Souli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the fundamental basics for solving fluid structure interaction problems, and describes different algorithms and numerical methods used to solve problems where fluid and structure can be weakly or strongly coupled. These approaches are illustrated with examples arising from industrial or academic applications. Each of these approaches has its own performance and limitations. The added mass technique is described first. Following this, for general coupling problems involving large deformation of the structure, the Navier-Stokes equations need to be solved in a moving mesh using an ALE formulation. The main aspects of the fluid structure coupling are then developed. The first and by far simplest coupling method is explicit partitioned coupling. In order to preserve the flexibility and modularity that are inherent in the partitioned coupling, we also describe the implicit partitioned coupling using an iterative process. In order to reduce computational time for large-scale problems, an introduction to the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) technique applied to FSI problems is also presented. To extend the application of coupling problems, mathematical descriptions and numerical simulations of multiphase problems using level set techniques for interface tracking are presented and illustrated using specific coupling problems. Given the book's comprehensive coverage, engineers, graduate students and researchers involved in the simulation of practical fluid structure interaction problems will find this book extremely useful.

Book excerpt: We have developed a highly efficient and portable fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation package, so-called OpenFSI. Within this package, the structure dynamics is accounted by a lattice model (LM) implemented in the framework of Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS), demonstrating the same accuracy as finite element analysis. The fluid flow is resolved by Palabos, which adopts the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to efficiently solve the Boltzmann equation that can recover the Navier-Stokes equation in mesoscale. Additionally, the immersed boundary method (IBM) is employed to couple LM and LBM together, therefore endowing the flexibility to choose alternative solid and fluid solvers. The whole simulation is fulfilled within the framework of Palabos, and the LAMMPS framework is called in Palabos as an external library and coupled through IBM. After validation of the package using a variety of benchmarks, it is used to investigate some classical FSI problems, including the free-falling of spheres; flapping of a deformable plate in cross-flow; spheres passing a dam; and swimming of microswimmers. To enlarge the application of OpenFSI, the transport of micro- and nano-particles in blood flow is studied, mimicking the drug vehicles circulation in the drug delivery system. The individual and synthetic effects of the so-called "4s" (size, shape, stiffness, and surface functionality) parameters of the particles are investigated through systematic modeling, including the anomalous vascular dynamics of nanoworms within blood flow; shear rate dependent margination of sphere-like, oblate-like and prolatelike micro-particles within blood flow; adhesion behavior of single cell on endothelial wall; localization of soft particle: margination and adhesion; and shape dependent transport of micro-particles in blood flow: from margination to adhesion. Lastly, the efficiency of this simulation package is explored by examining an extremely large system with thousands of red blood cells in blood flow. The OpenFSI package is found to have excellent linear scalability up to 8192 processors, due to the particle-based LM and LBM for structure and fluid flow respectively, as well as advanced cyberinfrastructure of LAMMPS package. Therefore, OpenFSI presents an alternative option to efficiently solve large scale FSI problems, hence to facilitate the unveiling of underlying physical mechanisms.

Book Practical Methods for Simulation of Compressible Flow and Structure Interactions

Download or read book Practical Methods for Simulation of Compressible Flow and Structure Interactions written by Nipun Kwatra and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a semi-implicit method for simulating inviscid compressible flow and its extensions for strong implicit coupling of compressible flow with Lagrangian solids, and artificial transition of fluid from compressible flow to incompressible flow regime for graphics applications. First we present a novel semi-implicit method for alleviating the stringent CFL condition imposed by the sound speed in simulating inviscid compressible flow with shocks, contacts and rarefactions. The method splits the compressible flow flux into two parts -- an advection part and an acoustic part. The advection part is solved using an explicit scheme, while the acoustic part is solved using an implicit method allowing us to avoid the sound speed imposed CFL restriction. Our method leads to a standard Poisson equation similar to what one would solve for incompressible flow, but has an identity term more similar to a diffusion equation. In the limit as the sound speed goes to infinity, one obtains the Poisson equation for incompressible flow. This implicit pressure solve also lends itself nicely to solve for the pressure and coupling forces at a solid fluid interface. With this pressure solve as the foundation, we then develop a novel method to implicitly two-way couple Eulerian compressible flow to volumetric Lagrangian solids. The method works for both deformable and rigid solids and for arbitrary equations of state. Similar to previous fluid-structure interaction methods, we apply pressure forces to the solid and enforce a velocity boundary condition on the fluid in order to satisfy a no-slip constraint. Unlike previous methods, however, we apply these coupled interactions implicitly by adding the constraint to the pressure system and combining it with any implicit solid forces in order to obtain a strongly coupled system. Because our method handles the fluid-structure interactions implicitly, we avoid introducing any new time step restrictions and obtain stable results even for high density-to-mass ratios, where explicit methods struggle or fail. We exactly conserve momentum and kinetic energy (thermal fluid-structure interactions are not considered) at the fluid-structure interface, and hence naturally handle highly non-linear phenomenon such as shocks, contacts and rarefactions. The implicit pressure solve allows our method to be used for any sound speed efficiently. In particular as the sound speed goes to infinity, we obtain the standard Poisson equation for incompressible flow. This allows our method to work seamlessly and efficiently as the sound speed in the underlying flow field changes. Building on this feature of our method, we next develop a practical approach to integrating shock wave dynamics into traditional smoke simulations. Previous methods for doing this either simplified away the compressible component of the flow and were unable to capture shock fronts or used a prohibitively expensive explicit method that limits the time step of the simulation long after the relevant shock waves and rarefactions have left the domain. Instead, using our semi-implicit formulation allows us to take time steps on the order of fluid velocity. As we handle the acoustic fluid effects implicitly, we can artificially drive the sound speed c of the fluid to infinity without going unstable or driving the time step to zero. This permits the fluid to transition from compressible flow to the far more tractable incompressible flow regime once the interesting compressible flow phenomena (such as shocks) have left the domain of interest, and allows the use of state-of-the-art smoke simulation techniques.

Download or read book Computational Overview of Fluid Structure Interaction written by Khaled Ghaedi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-07-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), also known as engineering fluid mechanics, deals with mutual interaction between fluid and structural components. Fluid flow depending on the structural shape, motion, surface, and structural roughness, acts as mechanical forces on the structure. FSI can be seen everywhere in medicine, engineering, aerospace, the sciences, and even our daily life. This book provides the basic concept of fluid flow behavior in interaction with structures, which is crucial for almost all engineering disciplines. Along with the fundamental principles, the book covers a variety of FSI problems ranging from fundamentals of fluid mechanics to plasma physics, wind turbines and their turbulence, heat transfer, magnetohydrodynamics, and dam-reservoir systems.
