Book Efficiency and Growth of Ethiopian Air Transport Industry

Download or read book Efficiency and Growth of Ethiopian Air Transport Industry written by Tsegay Kaleab Atsbaha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the efficiency and growth of the Ethiopian air transport sector through careful analysis. It provides essential research input for air transport industry practitioners in planning and resource management as well as for academics of advanced efficiency analysis who need to work and study in airports and the airline industry. The book analyzes the theoretical and practical implications of air transport growth determinants, airports' cost and production efficiency, including labor use efficiency by taking their respective determinant factors. The findings and policy implications of each research work provide important inputs for government policymakers and air transport planners to consider the causality of economic growth versus airlines growth and other determinants, to take lessons on the proper resource allocation in the application of airport cost and production efficiency, human capital, investment cost, price of capital, and labor inputs during the development and expansion of airports and airlines. This book is the first of its kind on the Ethiopian air transport industry and serves as a much-needed reference for the African air transport industry as well as other developing countries in terms of airport costs, production, labor use efficiency and airline growth perspectives.

Book The Economics and Political Economy of African Air Transport

Download or read book The Economics and Political Economy of African Air Transport written by Kenneth Button and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa is the smallest of the ‘regional’ aviation markets but one that Boeing and others expect to expand over the medium term. Developments on the continent that require the creation of robust and efficient air transport include growth in tourism, the export of ‘exotics’, and the emergence of modern manufacturing and high-tech industries. Africa’s regional aviation markets generally lack good airports and air traffic control, viable airlines, and adequately skilled labour. Airline safety is also a major concern. Written by a ‘Who’s Who’ of aviation specialists and policy makers, The Economics and Political Economy of African Air Transport fills an emerging void in the literature regarding Africa’s aviation markets. Its original papers focus explicitly on the economic and political dimensions of the subject, although with relevance to the strategic planning and management of airlines and their associated infrastructure. Topics discussed include external and internal market efficiencies, air service liberalization, the emergence of new carriers, safety and security, low cost airline and other business models, and airport economics. Focusing on the broader issues surrounding the subject, this book will be of interest to both the aviation community and those with an interest in economic and social development.

Book Open Skies for Africa

Download or read book Open Skies for Africa written by Charles E Schlumberger and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, where poor roads, ports, and railways often constrain efficient transportation, air transport holds great potential as a lever for economic growth and development. Yet Africa has suffered several decades of inefficient air services. Uncompetitive flag carriers, set up by newly independent African states, offered primarily intercontinental flights, while the domestic air service market remained underdeveloped and underserved. The 1999 pan-African treaty on liberalization of access to air transport markets, the Yamoussoukro Decision, attempted to address these shortcomings. Yet a decade later, only partial liberalization has been achieved. 'Open Skies for Africa: Implementing the Yamoussoukro Decision' reviews progress made in carrying out the treaty and suggests ways in which the liberalization process can be encouraged. The book analyzes the completed and still-pending steps toward implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision, both on a pan-African level and within various regions. Special focus is given to the challenges posed by the poor aviation safety and security standards that exist in most African countries. Finally, the book measures the impact that certain policy steps of the Yamoussoukro Decision have had and evaluates the economic significance of air transportation and its full liberalization in Africa. The book concludes that the process of liberalizing African air services must continue, and provides policy recommendations for the way forward.

Book The Role of Ethiopian Airlines in Urban Economy

Download or read book The Role of Ethiopian Airlines in Urban Economy written by Tewodros Tsega and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Economy - Environment economics, grade: Excellent, Ethiopian Civil Service University, language: English, abstract: This study is about the role of EAL in urban economy, the case of floriculture industry in Addis Ababa and its hinterlands. The main objective of the research is to evaluate the role of EAL in the economy of Addis Ababa and its hinterlands in the case of floriculture industry. It tries to see the role of EAL in employment creation, revenue generation, and in supporting the flower industry. In the study, descriptive and experimental types of research method were employed. Then, both probabilities (simple random sampling) and the non probability (purposive) sampling were used. Therefore, a total of 174 respondents were selected from employees of EAL, flower farms, logistic companies, and EHPEA to respond through a questionnaire and an interview. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS and the interpreted data were presented in tables, charts, graphs, and pictures. In this study, the researcher confirmed that “there is strong positive relationship between growths of the EAL and the growths of the Floriculture industries”. Furthermore, the different problems that affect the EAL from playing its role in the economy of Addis Ababa and its hinterlands through the floriculture industries were identified. The problems in the EAL side include: the space constraint in the cargo terminal of the EAL, for loading and unloading, for cold room, shortage of warehouse and aircraft, poor handling of flowers, and delay in departure. In order to solve the identified problems the following recommendations are forwarded: EAL is advised to widen the cargo terminal, prepare enough aircraft by buying or by renting from other airlines; the EAL is advised to allow other airlines to serve by their charter airplanes, encourage privatization in some activities like handling of perishables.

Book The Impact of Production Expansion of Labor Intensive Industrial Activities on the Ethiopian Economy

Download or read book The Impact of Production Expansion of Labor Intensive Industrial Activities on the Ethiopian Economy written by Menberu Atalele and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , language: English, abstract: Ethiopia’s industrial activity has been characterized by meager growth for the last epochs. But recently the Ethiopian government endorsed Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) which gives prime attention to selected industries. This study examines the likely effect of productivity expansion of labor intensive industrial activities on the macro economy, government priority industries, factor and household income and welfare of households. The sectors were selected from the Ethiopian 2009/10 SAM based on their production characteristics. The selected labor intensive sectors include dairy, grain milling, milling service, sugar refining, other food process, beverage, textile, leather product and wood products. In order to investigate the impact of a 10% increase in the technical coefficients of these labor intensive industrial activities, the study used the static stage computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The recently updated 2009/10 Ethiopian SAM was used to calibrate important parameters of the CGE models. The 2009/10 Ethiopian SAM revealed that 45.22% and 52.13% of rural and urban households generate their income from labor. The production expansion via an increase in their technical coefficient of the sectors derived significant change on macro variables such as real GDP, government consumption demand, investment demand, household consumption, export and import of goods and services. The GDP of the economy has been increased by 3.41%. The findings also suggest that production and export increase in government prioritized industrial products largely .For instance, the production of the textile and leather sectors increased by 26.08% and 41.03%,respectively.Increasing the production of labor intensive industrial activities showed significant decline of import of priority industrial goods. It also resulted in welfare gain to all rural and urban households. The study further extends its recommendation for Ethiopia to develop a strong industrial policy aimed towards promoting labor intensive industrial activities.
