Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although upstaged by the tragic appearance of the human immunodeficiency virus, herpes simplex viruses (HSV) types 1 and 2 continue to be major human pathogens against which we lack acceptable vaccines or other means of immunological control. The virus is large and complex, coding for 70 or more proteins. Although many mysteries remain to be unraveled, our knowledge base regarding genomic organization, gene expression and regulation, pathogenesis, and immune recog nition of component parts is quite considerable. Indeed, meet ings devoted entirely to herpesviruses are conspicuous by their frequency and excellent, yet sometimes exclusive, attendance. The purpose of this volume is to compile in a single book a series of reviews by leading investigators that deal with various aspects of virus-host interactions and which hopefully will pro vide clues as to how to best manage HSV from an immunobio logical perspective. Ultimately, one anticipates that a full under standing of virus-host interaction will lead to strategies useful for the prevention and control of HSV. The state of current progress with conventional vaccines is presented, as is a chapter on intracellular immunization. This latter novel approach to virus infections comes at approximately the bicentenary of Jenner's introduction of a successful conventional immunization strategy.

Book Designer Vaccines

    Book Details:
  • Author : Huw P. A. Hughes
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 1997-10-22
  • ISBN : 9780849376764

Download or read book Designer Vaccines written by Huw P. A. Hughes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-10-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designer Vaccines: Principles for Successful Prophylaxis seeks answers to these important questions and explores how immunological knowledge can be applied in the formulation and delivery of vaccines. Instead of focusing on the rating of existing vaccines, this forward-thinking text looks to how new vaccines can be developed and existing ones improved upon. The book provides sound immunological theory and fact as a basis for solving vaccine design problems. Beginning with a discussion of disease and immunity to infection, Designer Vaccines: Principles for Successful Prophylaxis describes how events leading to immunity following infection must be considered in the rational design of vaccines. It also introduces the mucosal immune system and considers the special requirements of oral vaccines. Both viral and bacterial vectors for vaccine delivery are reviewed in detail.

Book Development of Vaccines

Book Cytokines in the Treatment of Infectious Diseases

Download or read book Cytokines in the Treatment of Infectious Diseases written by B.J. Kullberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only recently a new range of agents has become available that are capable of stimulating and regulating host defense systems against microorganisms. Interleukins, interferons and haematopoietic growth factors are now being produced by the biotechnology industry and are being evaluated for clinical use in this area. Cytokines in the Treatment of Infectious Diseases provides a unique, up-to-date survey of this research area. The use of cytokines in a series of (groups of) infectious diseases is discussed in twelve succinct chapters, from model to clinical study, written by twenty-five expert authors from the world's key institutes in this area. The book is aimed at microbiologists, immunologists, molecular biologists, cell biologists and other scientific disciplines in the field of biotherapy. It is required reading for physicians dealing with infectious diseases who wish to keep up to date with the developments in this field.

Book Nanotechnological Applications in Virology

Download or read book Nanotechnological Applications in Virology written by Mahendra Rai and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanotechnological Applications in Virology explores the use of nanoparticles-based technologies to fight against viruses, also discussing the use of nanoparticles in the preparation of nano masks and as sanitizing agents. The role of nanotechnology against HIV, Hepatitis, Influenza, Herpes, Ebola and Zika using rapid detection and diagnostic techniques is included, as is a brief description of SARS, MERS, the novel Coronavirus, and recent advancements in its treatment process. Other sections cover the formulation of novel nano-vaccines for the treatment and control of viral infections like HIV, Hepatitis and COVID-19. Included toxicological studies of nanoparticles provide readers with a brief overview on global scenarios regarding viral infections. Nanotechnology is the present age technology, with wide usage in different areas of medical science, including drug delivery, gene therapy, antimicrobials, biosensors and bio-labelling. Nanoparticles play a competent role as an anti-infection agent and thus act as efficient antiviral agents. - Mitochondria as a Key Intracellular Target of Thallium Toxicity presents a new hypothesis that explains the decrease in antioxidant defense in thallium poisoning. In addition, the book proposes a new model for studying the transport of inorganic cations across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Readers will learn about the toxicity of thallium and its compounds, the toxicology of thallium, the toxic thallium effects on cells, and the effects of thallium on mitochondria. This book+J136 lists the pathways and mechanisms of thallium transport into cells and mitochondria. This toxicity has been analyzed at both the cellular and subcellular levels - The increase in human contact with the toxic trace element thallium is associated with developments in industry, the release of this metal into the environment from various rocks, and the use of special isotope techniques for studying the vascular bed
