Book excerpt: La spectroscopie est un outil très important dans la compréhension et la mise en évidence de nombreux processus physiques sous-jacents se déroulant au sein des plasmas et se traduisant par une signature caractéristique au niveau des profils de raies émises par ces plasmas. Ce travail met en évidence, via leur signature spectroscopique, des processus de corrélations de charges ayant lieu au sein des plasmas denses et chauds. D'une part, les effets de corrélations entre les particules sur l'élargissement Stark électronique pour des émetteurs ioniques dans les plasmas denses sont étudiés. Une simulation numérique basée sur une technique de dynamique moléculaire utilisant un potentiel ion-électron de Coulomb régularisé aux courtes distances a été mise au point. Elle permet de modéliser simultanément les ions et les électrons, et ainsi d'évaluer l'élargissement Stark électronique en prenant en compte toutes les corrélations entre les particules chargées du plasma. L'étude de l'élargissement Stark électronique de la raie Balmer-α d'ions hydrogénoi͏̈des en fonction de la charge de l'émetteur montre l'effet des corrélations des charges : le rétrécissement du profil de la raie dans ce cas précis. D'autre part, l'étude théorique et expérimentale de la signature spectroscopique du processus d'échange de charge dans les plasmas hétérogènes denses et chauds créés par laser est réalisée. Des travaux théoriques ont permis de mettre au point une expérience de spectroscopie d'émission à un faisceau laser et un diagnostic spectroscopique ultra-résolvant. Ce travail met pour la première fois en évidence la signature spectroscopique du processus d'échange de charge dans les plasmas ultra-denses créés par laser. Lors de la formation d'un plasma à partir d'une cible de carbure d'aluminium, trois creux d'émission dus au processus d'échange de charge sur la raie Lyman-γ émise par l'ion Al[12+] perturbé par l'ion C[6+] ont été observés.

Book excerpt: The book is a history of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) as applied to the growth of semiconductor thin films (note that it does not cover the subject of metal thin films). It begins by examining the origins of MBE, first of all looking at the nature of molecular beams and considering their application to fundamental physics, to the development of nuclear magnetic resonance and to the invention of the microwave MASER. It shows how molecular beams of silane (SiH4) were used to study the nucleation of silicon films on a silicon substrate and how such studies were extended to compound semiconductors such as GaAs. From such surface studies in ultra-high vacuum the technique developed into a method of growing high quality single crystal films of a wide range of semiconductors. Comparing this with earlier evaporation methods of deposition and with other epitaxial deposition methods such as liquid phase and vapour phase epitaxy (LPE and VPE). The text describes the development of MBE machines from the early 'home-made' variety to that of commercial equipment and show how MBE was gradually refined to produce high quality films with atomic dimensions. This was much aided by the use of various in-situ surface analysis techniques, such as reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and mass spectrometry, a feature unique to MBE. It looks at various modified versions of the basic MBE process, then proceed to describe their application to the growth of so-called 'low-dimensional structures' (LDS) based on ultra-thin heterostructure films with thickness of order a few molecular monolayers. Further chapters cover the growth of a wide range of different compounds and describe their application to fundamental physics and to the fabrication of electronic and opto-electronic devices. The authors study the historical development of all these aspects and emphasise both the (often unexpected) manner of their discovery and development and the unique features which MBE brings to the growth of extremely complex structures with monolayer accuracy.

Book excerpt: Since the early days of medicine one concern of doctors has been the removal of kidney stones and prevention of recurrence. Owing to the hesitancy of progress in the prevention of initial stone formation and of relapse, however, removal of stones from the kidney and ureter were developed to highly refined techniques and they formerly accounted for a major proportion of the urological operations performed. In the last few years developments in the treatment of kidney stones have taken a completely different turn. In the majority of cases suit able methods are available to bring about spontaneous passage of the stones, while in a smaller proportion drug-induced litholysis is pos sible. Stones that cannot be passed are now treated mainly with extra corporeal shockwave lithotripsy, percutaneous litholapaxy or uretero renoscopy. These methods are often used in combination and comple ment each other. Nonetheless, despite the accumulating experience with the new methods there will still be situations in which stones can not be removed except by open surgery. "Our skill as surgeons and the management of the brilliantly designed equipment would amount to nothing more than highly skilled mechanical work if they did not go hand in hand with enhanced insight into the cause of lithiasis and thus into ways of preventing it - or at least of preventing the relapse that is the lot of most patients.
