Book Basic and Applied High Pressure Biology

Download or read book Basic and Applied High Pressure Biology written by Peter B. Bennett and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High pressure biology has matured over the century since the pioneering investigations of A. Certes and P. Regnard on organisms dredged from the deep ocean. Basic work continues on whole organisms, organ systems, cells and subcellular systems and is now benefiting greatly from advances in molecular biology. Applied aspects of the subject include the growing field of hyperbaric medicine, based in large part on past work in diving physiology, and the expanding use of pressure in biological and medical industries including the food industry. The papers in this book derive from the 3rd International Meeting on High Pressure Biology which was designed to bring together a diverse group of investigators with interests ranging from molecular pressure responses to medical applications of hyperbaric oxygen. The book has the following sections: (1) Cellular and Molecular Biology, i.Cellular Responses to Pressure, ii.Molecular Responses to Pressure; (2) Pressure Effects on Animals and Animal Systems, i.Nervous System, ii.Systems Other than the Nervous System; (3) Applications of Pressure Biology, i.Applied Research and Development ii. Toxic and Beneficial Effects of Oxygen

Book High Pressure Effects in Chemistry Biology and Materials Science

Download or read book High Pressure Effects in Chemistry Biology and Materials Science written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the celebrated High Pressure School (HPS) is to provide a platform where both young and experienced researchers can meet and exchange their experiences in high-pressure research and techniques. Since 1996, four schools have been held in Warsaw and the tradition has developed of combining the topic of high pressure techniques with workshops which are related to the rapidly developing fields of high pressure science and technology: chemistry, biology and materials science; with particular attention being paid to nanostructured materials. This interaction of specialists in various fields, and the consequent exchange of their unequalled knowledge can only be expected to be extremely fruitful in approaching a full understanding of pressure effects on molecules, crystallites and biological cells, and of the associated changes in the properties and behaviours of macroscopic systems.

Download or read book Organic Synthesis written by A. Bruylants and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic Synthesis is a collection of papers dealing with synthetic tools, the effect of pressure on the electronic states of organic solids, and some novel approaches to alkylations. Some papers explain the cyclopropanation of silyl enol ethers and the two-phase reactions in the chemistry of carbanions and halocarbenes as useful tools in organic synthesis. One paper investigates the "biogenetic-type" synthesis of the bicyclic penicillin-cephalosporin antibiotics from an acyclic tripeptide equivalent. Another paper explains the advantages of the two-phase system to generate trihalomethylanions and dihalocarbenes as it allows the investigator to carry out all the reactions typical for these species easily. The system also readily applies to the reactions of some carbanions with aromatic nitrocompounds. Thallium(III) nitrate (TTN) can be used as an oxidant in organic synthesis; reactions that follow it use include the oxidations and oxidative rearrangements of olefins, acetylenes, ketones and compounds containing carbon-nitrogen double bonds. Another paper presents some examples that use singlet oxygen in synthetic organic chemistry. This collection is useful for researchers, technicians, and scientists whose works involve organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and other related fields of chemistry, such as physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

Book The Limits of Organic Life in Planetary Systems

Download or read book The Limits of Organic Life in Planetary Systems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for life in the solar system and beyond has to date been governed by a model based on what we know about life on Earth (terran life). Most of NASA's mission planning is focused on locations where liquid water is possible and emphasizes searches for structures that resemble cells in terran organisms. It is possible, however, that life exists that is based on chemical reactions that do not involve carbon compounds, that occurs in solvents other than water, or that involves oxidation-reduction reactions without oxygen gas. To assist NASA incorporate this possibility in its efforts to search for life, the NRC was asked to carry out a study to evaluate whether nonstandard biochemistry might support life in solar system and conceivable extrasolar environments, and to define areas to guide research in this area. This book presents an exploration of a limited set of hypothetical chemistries of life, a review of current knowledge concerning key questions or hypotheses about nonterran life, and suggestions for future research.
