Book The Effects of Focused Attention on Batting Performance of Collegiate Athletes

Download or read book The Effects of Focused Attention on Batting Performance of Collegiate Athletes written by Lauren C. Craig and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Proper thinking is essential to effective batting in baseball and softball. However, the qualities that define "proper thinking" are unspecified and therefore require examination. That is, on what should a batter focus for optimal performance? Ten baseball players and 13 softball players competing at the NCAA Division II collegiate level were individually given internal and external focus instructions related to their swings and completed four rounds of hitting. Two experimenters blind to condition recorded the result of each swing; hits in fair territory received one point and hits in foul territory received zero points. Results indicated no significant difference between Focus Instruction administered and the mean number of fair hits. However, a significant interaction was found for class level, with upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) performing significantly better during both distal and proximal external conditions compared to lowerclassmen (freshmen and sophomores). Results also indicated a significant effect for sex with females outperforming males during all conditions. This study is important in discovering the impacts of focused attention instructions on the performance of collegiate level players."--Abstract.

Book Baseball Psychology

Download or read book Baseball Psychology written by Jack R. Helber and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has taken several years to finalize into a finished product. In reality, though, it can never be finished because in baseball as well as life, new situations can arise daily or in a game that can cause mental turmoil. This book is about how to combat the mental problems that the game can create. Young players and their coaches spend endless hours in developing physical fundamental skills while spending very little time or effort in the development of the mental fundamentals. This book attempts to give ideas for both players and coaches to assist in the "gray matter" development of the athlete. After all, to become a proficient ball player, the athlete must acquire both physical and mental skills. In this book, the young athlete will learn ways to fend off fear of a situation, how to combat complex developments, and the importance of using the mind to advance to the next level. The ability to see yourself in a situation, talk yourself through an adverse situation, and dream of a success in a trying moment becomes a major advantage in an athlete's rise to the top performance at each level of participation. Fear, in sports, becomes the biggest block toward the young athlete's performance. This book attempts to show the young player how to overcome this fear and learn to develop a respect for each trying moment, and that these moments should be recognized as a challenge.

Book The Biomechanics of Batting Swinging and Hitting

Download or read book The Biomechanics of Batting Swinging and Hitting written by Glenn Fleisig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the movie Bull Durham, frustrated manager Joe Riggins stresses to his team, "This is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball." This simplification works well for biomechanists too, as sports can be broken down into specific physical tasks like throwing, hitting, catching, and running. There have been significant advances in understanding some actions, but not others. In the first ten years of the journal Sports Biomechanics, only 18 of 236 articles were about hitting a ball. This scarcity is startling considering that according to USA Today (May 20, 2005), three of the five hardest things to do in sports involve hitting a ball (#1: baseball batting, #4: golf tee shot, and #5: tennis serve return). This book provides the latest biomechanical research in the under-studied field of hitting a ball. The biomechanics of baseball, cricket, hockey, hurling, softball, table tennis, and tennis are all examined. The chapters are written in a style that will both satisfy the high standards of biomechanists and provide information for instructors and athletes to improve performance. This book is based on a special issue of Sports Biomechanics.

Book A Comparison of the Effects of Imagery and Action Observation on Baseball Batting Performance

Download or read book A Comparison of the Effects of Imagery and Action Observation on Baseball Batting Performance written by Brooke Leigh Anne Neuman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effect of two different preparation methods on hitting performance in a high-fidelity baseball batting simulation. Novice and expert players participated in one of three conditions: observation (viewing a video of the goal action), visualization (hearing a script of the goal action), or a no-preparation control group. Each participant completed three different hitting tasks: pull hit, opposite-field hit, and sacrifice fly. Experts had more successful hits, overall, than novices. The number of successful hits was significantly higher for both the observation and visualization conditions than for the control. In most cases, performance was best in the observation condition. Experts demonstrated greater effects from the mental preparation techniques compared to novices. However, these effects were mediated by task difficulty. The difference between experts and novices, as well as the difference between the observation and visualization conditions was greater for the more difficult hitting task (opposite-field hitting) than for the easier hitting task (sacrifice fly). These effects of mental preparation were associated with significant changes in batting kinematics (e.g., changes in point of bat/ball contact and swing direction). The results indicate that mental preparation can improve directional hitting ability in baseball with the optimal preparation methods depending on skill-level and task difficulty.
