Book Effects of Tyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Yaw on the Handling Qualities of Vtol Aircraft

Download or read book Effects of Tyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Yaw on the Handling Qualities of Vtol Aircraft written by John F. Garren (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visual flight investigation indicates the extent to which cross coupling affects handling qualities as a function of engine angular momentum, angular velocity about the yaw axis, and longitudinal control power. A theoretical examination, supplemented by simulator data, indicates the extent to which increased longitudinal damping improves the coupling controllability.

Book Effects of Gyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Yaw on the Handling Qualities of VTOL Aircraft

Download or read book Effects of Gyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Yaw on the Handling Qualities of VTOL Aircraft written by John F. Garren and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gyroscopic cross coupling between pitch and yaw was simulated with a variable-stability helicopter while hovering in a yawing maneuver to ascertain the effect of cross coupling on handling qualities. Pilot ratings of the controllability of cross coupling were obtained for various combinations of longitudinal control power, angular velocity about the yaw axis, and simulated engine angular momentum. A theoretical investigation, supplemented by simulator data, was undertaken to determine the effect of longitudinal damping on the coupling controllability. Also, a comparison was made between flight and simulator data. The results indicated that for an aircraft with otherwise satisfactory longitudinal handling qualities, the level of cross coupling is satisfactory when less than 30 percent of the available longitudinal control will trim out the largest gyroscopic coupling moment which might be encountered. Increased longitudinal damping resulted in a significant increase in the controllability of pitch-yaw gyroscopic cross coupling.

Book Effects of Gyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Roll on the Handling Qualities of Vtol Aircraft

Download or read book Effects of Gyroscopic Cross Coupling Between Pitch and Roll on the Handling Qualities of Vtol Aircraft written by John F. Garren (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical investigation indicates the extent to which the amount of cross coupling present in an aircraft is dependent on the angular-velocity damping and moments of inertia of the aircraft as well as the angular momentum of the engine. The amount of cross coupling which the pilot can tolerate is a function of the maneuvers encountered and the aircraft control power. A criterion based on pilots' opinions obtained from the simulation flights provides a means for determining the acceptability of cross coupling in VTOL aircraft as a function of the aircraft design parameters. Book Simulation Study of the Lift roll Coupling Problem for Hovering VTOL Aircraft

Download or read book Simulation Study of the Lift roll Coupling Problem for Hovering VTOL Aircraft written by Robert A. Jacobsen and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of lift-roll coupling on the handling qualities of hovering VTOL aircraft using differential thrust for roll control were assessed in a piloted simulation study in the Ames six-degrees-of-freedom motion simulator. The configuration tested has three vertical thrust sources, one on the roll axis and two laterally displaced from the roll axis, with a thrust distribution of 25/50/25. The outboard thrust sources were modulated to provide roll control whereas all three provided height control. Maximum thrust-to-weight ratio was varied together with a coupling parameter that combined roll-inertia, weight, and engine location. Results showed that handling qualities are affected not only by the occurrence of lift-roll coupling (dependent on both variables) but also by the severity of the coupling (dependent on the coupling parameter alone). However, the advantages of differential thrust for control can be retained with careful design.
