Download or read book Vestibular System Part 2 Psychophysics Applied Aspects and General Interpretations written by H.H. Kornhuber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.
Download or read book Task control of Arousal and the Effects of Repeated Unidirectional Angular Acceleration on Human Vestibular Responses written by William E. Collins and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subjects were exposed to a 10-day habituation series of 200 CW accelerations in total darkness while performing attention-demanding tasks. Decelerations were subthreshold. Preliminary and post-tests indicated that slow-phase nystagmus and duration of the ocular response declined bidirectionally as a function of the habituation trials, but frequency of nystagmus increased during the stimulus period and for a few seconds thereafter. These changes were approximately equal for both CW and CCW stimulation. Measurements of subjective velocity were obtained during several preand post-trials but never during the habituation series. A decline in the intensity of the sensation to CW acceleration, but not to CCW stimulation, was produced by the habituation series. A second post-test given after one month with no intervening stimulation showed little or no restoration of nystagmus. However, the subjective reaction demonstrated a clear, albeit incomplete pattern of recovery. (Author).

Download or read book Contributions to Sensory Physiology written by William D. Neff and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Sensory Physiology discusses a theory of the physiological basis of sensation. It describes and illustrates the cellular pattern of the neuro-epithelium, focusing on sensory cells, neural structures, and fluid spaces of the organ of Corti. The book shows that the simultaneous use of light, phase contrast, and electron microscopy generates a better image. It discusses the functional parts of the vestibular and lateral line organs. The text describes the structure and organization of receptors. The structure of the cupula and otolithic membranes are also explained. Complex types of stimulation are examined in detail. The vestibular system is discussed in full. The electrophysiological analysis of the monkey's eyes is defined as well as the methods that are being used to examine the primate vision. A chapter of the book focuses on the vision in intermittent light. The book will provide useful information to veterinarians, anatomists, students, and researchers in the field of ophthalmology.

Download or read book A Working Bibliography on the Effects of Motion on Human Performances written by Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliography compiled from a number of disciplines which bear on the problem of motion and its effects on human performance is presented. Psychophysiological reports in the area of spatial orientation, perception, and receptor mechanisms provide background on the human organism in relation to motion stimuli. The effects of aerospace vehicle motion are represented by a compilation of studies of performance under acceleration, vibration and buffeting, tumbling, and weightlessness. Reports on training and motion simulation, equipment and methodology, and general anlyses of the whole problem area are presented. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasis must be placed on the evidence that the vestibular system is capable of being trained. On the basis of our understanding of the vestibular system, of spatial disorientation, and of motion sickness, operational vestibular problems should be able to be dealt with using the tools of education and training. Whatever method is used, the need for vestibular training persists as long a spatial disorientation wastes the lives of aircrew and motion sickness compromises military effectiveness.
