Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if the use of word sorts during small group reading instruction and independent work time would increase the spelling abilities of first grade students. The study was conducted over a nine-week period during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year. One first grade class received the treatment. There were 18 students that were divided into four mall groups of 4-6 students each. They were grouped based on their scores from the Primary Spelling Inventory that was given as the pre-test and post-test. Subjects in the group received small group instruction on the spelling concept, through word sorts, three times each week and worked on word sort activities during independent word work center, three times each week. At the end of each full week of instruction, a spelling test was given to assess their understanding of the spelling concept taught. Teacher anecdotal notes/observations were kept to record observations and document subject progress during the study. Results form the Primary Spelling Inventory post-test indicated an improvement in the spelling abilities by subjects in the first grade classroom that received the treatment. The results of this study indicated the possibility of growth in the spelling abilities of first grad students who received instruction on spelling concepts using word sorts. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Some years helping students achieve growth is easy, while other years it is a struggle. Every year, first grade teachers in the Cedar Rapids Community School District are challenged to meet the goal of all students reading at grade level by the end of their second-grade year. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of providing additional spelling lessons would have on students' reading and seplling abilities. Implemente was Timothy Rasinski's approach, Making and Writing Words in the First Grade. This approach was meant to help improve students' ability to decode words by way of teaching a planned sequence of phonics elements. The lessons used were paced and aligned to match the Cedar Rapids Community School District's reading curriculum. Although more research would be needed to determine if growth was contributed conclusively to the Making and Writing Words approach, results showed growth in all areas of reading and spelling. An increase in reading fluency was also indicated. The growth made during the research period provided teachers another method to help students read at grade level by the end of their second-grade year.

Book excerpt: Subjects in a second grade classroom, reading below grade level, demonstrated a lack of ability to transfer taught spelling patterns to written work. The researcher provided treatment, using word study instruction, for a group of 10 subjects in Alburnett, Iowa during the fall of 2008. The study used the pretest and posttest approach. This type of research focused on one group of subjects and the effects of a particular treatment on those subjects. Instruction followed a 5 day instructional cycle including weekly pretests and posttests. The hands-on activities included word sorts and word hunts. Data collected included Basic Reading Inventory, Primary Spelling Inventory, weekly sentence dictation assessment, and an observation log of student spelling. Results indicated most subjects making progress according to Basic Reading Inventory and Primary Spelling Inventory scores, however results proved inconclusive when examining student transfer of spelling patterns learned to written work.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Words Their Way on first grade students' orthographic knowledge. The study was conducted over a nine-week period during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year. The study followed a pretest/psttest design. Two different pretests were given to determine the appropriate instructional spelling stage for each student. Students received word study instruction for 10-15 minutes three days a week. In a small group setting, students closely observed spelling patterns through hands-on sorting activities. After nine weeks, students were given two different posttests to determine the amount of growth made. The words study instruction was implemented with the use of Words Their Way (Bear et al. 2008) materials to increase sudents' orthographic knowledge. Assessments were given and data was collected through the PSI (Primary Spelling Inventory), spelling stage assessments, and an anecdotal journal. The results of this study showed an increase in orthographic knowledge of first grade students which supported my hypothesis.
