Download or read book The Effects of Using Word Sorts on the Spelling Abilities of First Grade Students written by Sara Leathers and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if the use of word sorts during small group reading instruction and independent work time would increase the spelling abilities of first grade students. The study was conducted over a nine-week period during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year. One first grade class received the treatment. There were 18 students that were divided into four mall groups of 4-6 students each. They were grouped based on their scores from the Primary Spelling Inventory that was given as the pre-test and post-test. Subjects in the group received small group instruction on the spelling concept, through word sorts, three times each week and worked on word sort activities during independent word work center, three times each week. At the end of each full week of instruction, a spelling test was given to assess their understanding of the spelling concept taught. Teacher anecdotal notes/observations were kept to record observations and document subject progress during the study. Results form the Primary Spelling Inventory post-test indicated an improvement in the spelling abilities by subjects in the first grade classroom that received the treatment. The results of this study indicated the possibility of growth in the spelling abilities of first grad students who received instruction on spelling concepts using word sorts. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Book No More Phonics and Spelling Worksheets

Download or read book No More Phonics and Spelling Worksheets written by Jennifer Palmer and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We want students to be curious about how words work and develop strategies that work whether they are decoding words or spelling them. And our jobs would be easier if students couldn't wait for word study. Yet so many classrooms are stuck in the cycle of unengaging, one-size fits all phonics and spelling worksheets. Reading specialist Jennifer Palmer and literacy researcher Marcia Invernizzi offer better, more effective, more engaging practices. Their suggestions lead kids to not only make progress during word study but also to transfer what they learn about words to their reading and writing. No More Phonics and Spelling Worksheets show us: why skill-and-drill methods and worksheets cause children to struggle or disengage; the kinds of teaching that research shows actually works; instructional ideas for word study can put to use right away. Pick up No More Phonics and Spelling Worksheets, discover practices that better support literacy growth, and help everyone make progress."--Publisher's description.

Book The Effects of Using Phonetic Spelling Mini Lessons on Making and Writing Words with First Grade Students

Download or read book The Effects of Using Phonetic Spelling Mini Lessons on Making and Writing Words with First Grade Students written by Jeana L. Lane and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many teachers ask themselves at the beginning of each year how they are going to help their students make growth in reading and spelling. Some years helping students achieve growth is easy, while other years it is a struggle. Every year, first grade teachers in the Cedar Rapids Community School District are challenged to meet the goal of all students reading at grade level by the end of their second-grade year. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of providing additional spelling lessons would have on students' reading and seplling abilities. Implemente was Timothy Rasinski's approach, Making and Writing Words in the First Grade. This approach was meant to help improve students' ability to decode words by way of teaching a planned sequence of phonics elements. The lessons used were paced and aligned to match the Cedar Rapids Community School District's reading curriculum. Although more research would be needed to determine if growth was contributed conclusively to the Making and Writing Words approach, results showed growth in all areas of reading and spelling. An increase in reading fluency was also indicated. The growth made during the research period provided teachers another method to help students read at grade level by the end of their second-grade year.

Book The Effects of Using Word Study Instruction on Students Spelling and Writing Ability in a Second Grade Classroom

Download or read book The Effects of Using Word Study Instruction on Students Spelling and Writing Ability in a Second Grade Classroom written by Amy M. Wallace and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subjects in a second grade classroom, reading below grade level, demonstrated a lack of ability to transfer taught spelling patterns to written work. The researcher provided treatment, using word study instruction, for a group of 10 subjects in Alburnett, Iowa during the fall of 2008. The study used the pretest and posttest approach. This type of research focused on one group of subjects and the effects of a particular treatment on those subjects. Instruction followed a 5 day instructional cycle including weekly pretests and posttests. The hands-on activities included word sorts and word hunts. Data collected included Basic Reading Inventory, Primary Spelling Inventory, weekly sentence dictation assessment, and an observation log of student spelling. Results indicated most subjects making progress according to Basic Reading Inventory and Primary Spelling Inventory scores, however results proved inconclusive when examining student transfer of spelling patterns learned to written work.

Book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children

Download or read book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-07-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. Implications for parents, teachers, schools, communities, the media, and government at all levels are discussed. The book examines the epidemiology of reading problems and introduces the concepts used by experts in the field. In a clear and readable narrative, word identification, comprehension, and other processes in normal reading development are discussed. Against the background of normal progress, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children examines factors that put children at risk of poor reading. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.

Download or read book A Closer Look at Spelling written by Grace Oakley and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the authors take a closer look at spelling, the teaching and learning of which is considerably more complex than is often assumed. In order to spell well, children need to learn how to strategically use knowledge about phonology, orthography, morphology and etymology. It is also a visual activity that involves the laying down and retrieval of visual representations of words and word parts in memory. Children also need to learn how to use the metalanguage associated with spelling - words like phoneme, syllable, affixes and morpheme - as this will help them talk and think about spelling strategies. Thus, spelling is a language activity and also a thinking activity. Ideally, it should also be a meaningful activity that is engaged in with a positive attitude. The authors draw on the theoretical and research literature, as well as classroom examples, to explain how to teach primary school aged children to use multiple strategies to spell. They also consider the assessment of spelling, as well as how to assist those who have difficulties in learning to spell. The work makes links to the Australian Curriculum: EnglishThis book would help primary and preservice teachers by providing them with understandings, based on research and theory, which would help them choose and use appropriate pedagogical strategies (also provided in the book) to teach spelling to children with diverse needs, including children from EAL/D backgrounds and those with difficulties and disabilities that impact on spelling.

Book The Effects of Using Words Their Way on the Orthographic Knowledge of First Grade Students

Download or read book The Effects of Using Words Their Way on the Orthographic Knowledge of First Grade Students written by Lindsay Landolt and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Words Their Way on first grade students' orthographic knowledge. The study was conducted over a nine-week period during the fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year. The study followed a pretest/psttest design. Two different pretests were given to determine the appropriate instructional spelling stage for each student. Students received word study instruction for 10-15 minutes three days a week. In a small group setting, students closely observed spelling patterns through hands-on sorting activities. After nine weeks, students were given two different posttests to determine the amount of growth made. The words study instruction was implemented with the use of Words Their Way (Bear et al. 2008) materials to increase sudents' orthographic knowledge. Assessments were given and data was collected through the PSI (Primary Spelling Inventory), spelling stage assessments, and an anecdotal journal. The results of this study showed an increase in orthographic knowledge of first grade students which supported my hypothesis.
