Download or read book Effects of Student Response System Use on Student Learning and Verbal Participation for a Sixth grade Mathematics Unit written by Gary Thomas Grissom (II.) and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of the study found no significant difference in student learning as measured by a teacher created posttest for the probability unit. No significant difference was found to exist in student verbal participation for the mean total number of student-to-teacher responses between the treatment group of SRS use compared to the control group of SRS non-use. A significant difference was found in student verbal participation between the treatment and control groups for the mean total number of student-to-student responses. Results of a survey of student attitudes regarding SRS use are also presented.

Book Investigation on the Effectiveness of Class Response Systems and Their Effect on Student Learning

Download or read book Investigation on the Effectiveness of Class Response Systems and Their Effect on Student Learning written by Derrick A. Rohl and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audience response systems, student response technology, or simply "clickers" are products designed for teachers to efficiently collect multiple-choice answers from numerous students simultaneously. In large lecture halls, class response systems enable interaction where it previously would not have been feasible. In the classroom, response systems facilitate a shift from the teacher calling on 1 student to the teacher receiving responses from every student. Studies have found mixed results ranging from class response systems improving students' academic performance through the course of a unit to the occasional case of detrimental effects on students' grades compared with control groups without class response systems. These studies have explored the use of class response systems in a variety of academic subjects, comparing varying demographics including gender and varying student needs including students with anxiety or shyness. This study measured the effect of using class response systems in a secondary science classroom for 1 unit to explore whether or not the use of class response systems would have a measurable impact on students' gain scores between the pretest and the posttest for that unit. The results based on comparison of gain scores between experimental and control groups indicate that the use of class response systems does not demonstrate an effect on student learning. Keywords: clickers, engagement, learning

Book The Effect of a Student Response System on Student Achievement in Mathematics Within an Elementary Classroom

Download or read book The Effect of a Student Response System on Student Achievement in Mathematics Within an Elementary Classroom written by Yvette Ellsworth Dix and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this quasi-experimental quantitative study was to determine if the use of a student response system, combined with an interactive whiteboard, led to increased student achievement in mathematics within a fifth grade classroom as measured by a district benchmark assessment and the annual Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) Test. The study was founded on the understanding that students in the United States were lagging further and further behind their international peers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. One potential way to motivate students in these areas was to adhere to the constructivist approach to learning and to involve students in the construction of their own knowledge. Although very little research has been conducted combining interactive whiteboards and student response systems in elementary classrooms to measure their effectiveness related to student achievement, this combination may be what is needed to address how to raise student academic scores while engaging digital native students in the process. In this study, student scores from a district benchmark assessment served as the baseline measure of mathematical proficiency. The AIMS Test served as the outcome measure of mathematics achievement in the study. An analysis of covariance was conducted and it demonstrated a significant difference, based on a significance level of .05, between the treatment and the control groups, with F = 6.83 and p = .01. It was therefore determined that the use of a student response system positively affected student achievement in mathematics.

Book Evaluation of the Effects of Ability Grouping in Sixth grade Math at ABC Elementary

Download or read book Evaluation of the Effects of Ability Grouping in Sixth grade Math at ABC Elementary written by Jessica Morales and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quantitative evaluation study endeavored to determine the effectiveness of the ability-grouped math classes at ABC Elementary. The main research question for this study was "Is the current practice of ability grouping in sixth-grade math at ABC Elementary a system that promotes academic gains on standardized tests and a positive self-efficacy in math for all students?" Research in the area of ability grouping suggested that leveling students by ability could promote social inequalities and academic consequences. While other studies in this field have found that different types of grouping students may benefit them. The math class participants in this research study were 211 sixth-grade math students enrolled in ABC Elementary over the period of three years, from 2010-2013. The researcher analyzed growth on fifth and sixth-grade standardized tests for growth, and middle school math placement test scores to chart gains or losses for sixth-grade students. A self-efficacy survey was also used to determine if students were in agreement with their math class placement and whether they were developing a positive self-efficacy in math while participating in their homogeneous math class. The conclusions of this study were that majority of students at ABC Elementary were performing well in math and had developed a positive self-efficacy. However, the findings also suggested that not all students felt their current math class challenged them, and that students participating in the accelerated class were experiencing a larger percentage of academic score declines than the other math class levels.

Book A Study of a Response to Intervention Model for Urban Sixth grade

Download or read book A Study of a Response to Intervention Model for Urban Sixth grade written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Response-to-intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered intervention process designed in part to identify students with specific learning disabilities ([SLD], Vaughn & Fuchs, 2003). The RTI is also designed to assist struggling readers as they access the general education curriculum. This research effort utilized a pre-test/post-test design to determine the effectiveness of RTI when implemented with struggling readers in middle school. The implementation of evidence-based intensive reading instruction was compared with the implementation of traditional 6th grade instruction. Participants in the research were 56, 6th grade students who scored “Far Below Basic” or “Below Basic” on the 2006-2007 English Language Arts (ELA) California Standards Test (CST) and who scored at 3rd grade level or below on four curriculum-based measurements (CBM). Over 25 different languages are spoken at the school site used in this research, and nearly all of the students are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). The sample included 61% Latinos, 30% African American, and 9% Indochinese. Of which, 86% were English Learners (ELs) and 20% of students had specific learning disabilities (SLD). The control group (n = 28) was provided with 6th grade traditional classroom instruction only, with no additional assistance. The intervention group (n = 28) received approximately 30 hours of intense reading instruction in 1:3 teacher-student homogeneous groups. Participants received intervention for one hour (three, 20-minute intervals), three times a week, for 10 weeks, using three out of four scientifically validated reading programs. The research design utilized both descriptive and inferential statistics to measure the effectiveness of interventions using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) on students' reading scores, overall grade point average, and the effect on students' 2007-2008 ELA CST scores. This study also examined the nature of Tier 1 and Tier 2 learning environments and instruction as they relate to students' language and learning differences. Observations were conducted, followed by interviews with the participating teachers (n = 3) and interventionists (n = 3). The results from this mixed-methods study informs educators about the effects of evidence-based Tier 2 interventions and clarifies the nature of Tier 1 and Tier 2 responsive instruction for diverse student populations.
