Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of road crossings on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in a wadeable Ozark river. I collected macroinvertebrates during winter and summer from four riffle locations (upstream, at crossing, downstream, and farther downstream) at each of five sites in the upper Current River (mean discharge 12 m3 s-1). Sixteen environmental variables were measured at each location to characterize sites. Using digital photographs from trail cameras, traffic frequencies were calculated and largely consisted of hikers and horses. Based on counts of 68,353 individuals from 111 macroinvertebrate taxa, I calculated four metrics (taxa richness, Shannon's index, EPT, biotic index) combined into the Stream Condition Index and assessed effects of stream crossings with a two-way nested ANOVA for each season. All metrics showed strong differences among sites but inconsistent effects among locations. Multivariate analyses (NMDS and a nested ANOSIM) also revealed strong differences in community composition among sites, as well as among locations. Taken together, the results indicate crossing disturbances during summer and winter 2009 were either too infrequent or small in intensity to impair benthic macroinvertebrate communities.

S. Heth and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbance is a dominant force in streams, and macroinvertebrates have adapted by using specialized strategies to reach refugia. Refugia include stable environments with abundant shelter and food resources. In the Missouri Ozarks, spring-fed tributaries are possible refugia. To determine if spring-fed tributaries serve as thermal refugia, submergent bidirectional movement was measured from spring-fed and surface-fed confluences in the Current River, Missouri during winter and summer. Macroinvertebrates were sampled to capture standing and bidirectional movement. Macroinvertebrate communities in summer significantly differed and formed three groups: surface-fed tributaries, Current River main channel, and spring-fed tributaries as supported by nonparametric analyses. Spring-fed tributary macroinvertebrate communities were distinct, which suggests these tributaries are unlikely thermal refugia for macroinvertebrates. Because greatest community differences existed between tributary types, mesohabitats were investigated. Mesohabitats differed in community composition and taxonomic richness within functional feeding groups with marginal vegetation having high taxonomic richness. Chironomidae among mesohabitats were analyzed because of their high diversity and density in streams. At the genus level, the inclusion of chironomids in analyses did not alter bioassessment metrics although chironomids alone were able to differentiate among mesohabitats reflecting differences found by the entire macroinvertebrate community. The most abundant chironomid taxa related best to nutrients and sediments. Further work with Chironomidae at the species level could improve environmental assessment and interpretation. The mesohabitat scale was able to differentiate among macroinvertebrate communities and should be further investigated in the Ozarks.

Book excerpt: Changing land use practices have contributed substantially to an increase in stream degradation and biotic stresses. Clearing of forested areas, urbanization, and agricultural practices are a direct result of sustaining the ever increasing human population. In the Ozarks of Southwest Missouri, little research has been performed on these impacts on streams outside of the Springfield area, leaving much of this region without an account of such anthropogenic disturbances. To better assess the impacts of anthropogenic disturbances in southwest Missouri, four streams were chosen following the rural-urban disturbance gradient. Geomorphic, habitat, and hydrologic data was collected following the USGS National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) protocol with additional survey methods. Water quality was assessed for each stream through nutrient samples, water chemistry, and macroinvertebrate community analysis. Results provide evidence indicating that all streams in this study were considered degraded, both biologically and geomorphically and that anthropogenic influences have altered and affected all streams in this study with little regard to classification type. However, the degree and severity of impairment varied among stream types. Percent shading and water temperature were the only factors significant correlated to land use that also had a high degree of similarity with the macroinvertebrate community indices. This suggests that in impaired stream reaches, shading, and the environmental factors it can influence, can have a substantial impact on the success rate of the macroinvertebrate communities within these streams.
