Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to quantify the effects of a warm-up with static or dynamic stretching on countermovement jump height, reaction time, muscle onsets for tibialis anterior (TA) and vastus lateralis (VL), and low back/ hamstring flexibility. METHODS: Twenty one recreationally-active males (24.4 ± 4.5 yrs), recruited from the university community, completed 3 data collection sessions. Inclusion criteria were regular participation (30 minutes, 3 days per week) in exercise including resistance training, sprinting, or jumping, and no history of lower extremity injury in the past 6 months. Each session included a 5 minute treadmill jog followed by one of the stretch treatments: no stretching (NS), static stretching (SS), or dynamic stretching (DS). After the general warm-up and treatment, the participant performed a sit-and-reach test to assess low back and hamstring flexibility. Next, the participant completed a series of ten maximal-effort countermovement jumps (CMJ), during which he was asked to jump as quickly as possible after seeing a visual stimulus (light). The onset of movement and CMJ height were determined from force plate data, and muscle onsets (TA and VL) were obtained using surface electromyography (sEMG). Ground reaction forces were recorded at 2000 Hz using a portable force plate, and filtered at 25 Hz. Outcome measures included maximal jump height, reaction time, and muscle onset (TA and VL). A repeated measures 3 (treatment) by 8 (jump) ANOVA was used to assess CMJ height. Additional outcome measures (reaction time, muscle onsets, flexibility) were assessed using separate repeated-measures one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: Results of the 3x8 repeated-measures ANOVA for CMJ height revealed a significant main effect of treatment (p=.004). Post hoc analysis showed significant differences between NS (41.4cm) and DS (43.0cm) (p=.0045), and between SS (41.9cm) and DS (p=.0435), but not between NS and SS (p=.4605). Analysis also revealed a significant main effect of jump (p=.005) on CMJ height: mean jump height progressively decreased from the early to the late jumps. Seventy two subjects (38 males, 34 females) performed static stretching (SS), dynamic stretching (OS), self-myofascial release with a foam roller (FR), and no warm-up prior (C) to the sit and reach test (SR), vertical jump (VJ), and standing broad jump (SBJ). Outcome measurements included SR measurement, VJ height, and SBJ distance. Data was analyzed using a one-way repeated measures analysis of variance. The difference in pre and post warm-up SR measurements were statistically significant (p = 0.000) following SS, OS, and FR in comparison to C. There were no significant effects in VJ height (p = 0.995), or in SBJ length following any of the warm-up protocols (p = 0.820). It was concluded that SS, OS, and FR have no acute effects on jump performance, but may increase low back and hamstring flexibility.

Book excerpt: The evidence for performance decrements with prolonged static stretching (SS)(>60s per muscle group) has led to a paradigm shift in optimal stretching routines within a full warm-up protocol. Many athletic teams and individuals have now incorporated dynamic stretching (DS) and dynamic activity (DA) rather than SS into their pre-exercise warm-up routines. However, much of the previous research examining SS did not incorporate all three components of a full warm-up protocol (aerobic, SS and DS/DA activity). Based on previous literature, the objective of the present study was to compare differing durations of SS (30, 60, and 120 seconds per muscle group or a control condition with no SS) within in a full warm-up protocol on various testing measures. Sixteen male participants (Sixteen males; 27.6 ± 2.15 years, 187.1 ± 15.3 lb. and 181.9 ± cm) with an athletic background and at least 2 years of strength and endurance training experience completed four conditions, each condition included a prior submaximal 5-minute aerobic warm-up on a cycle ergometer, one of the four SS interventions (0, 30, 60 or 120s per muscle group) and a subsequent DS/DA component. Results of the present study serve as evidence that prolonged durations of SS (SS 120s) per muscle group, even with the inclusion of a DS/DA component can impair subsequent performance in vertical jump height, force production and rate of force production, evoked contractile properties and potentiated twitch forces, and the interpolated twitch technique. Results also show that ROM continues to increase immediately following each of the three components within the warm-up (aerobic, SS and DS/DA) in all conditions.
