Book EFFECTS OF SONIC BOOM ON PEOPLE ST LOUIS MISSOURI 1961 1962

Download or read book EFFECTS OF SONIC BOOM ON PEOPLE ST LOUIS MISSOURI 1961 1962 written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vicinity of St. Louis, Missouri, was exposed to approximately 150 sonic booms during a 10-month period from July 1961 to April 1962. Ground overpressures, ranging up to about 3 lb/sq ft, were carefully measured for a series of 17 of the supersonic flights. Data obtained from over 2300 direct interviews, analyses of complaints, and engineering evaluations of alleged damage were related to information on aircraft operations and sonic-boom overpressure measurements. Most residents interviewed indicated some interference with routine living activities, yet less than 1% filed formal complaints. Alleged building damage was superficial in nature and consisted mostly of cracks in brittle surfaces. There were no reports of direct adverse physiological effects.

Book Exploratory Study of the Potential Effects of Exposure to Sonic Boom on Human Health Volume 2 Epidemiological Study

Download or read book Exploratory Study of the Potential Effects of Exposure to Sonic Boom on Human Health Volume 2 Epidemiological Study written by H. Anton-Guirgis and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been carried out to investigate possible human health effects caused by exposure of people to sonic boom. The subjects of the study were the residents of the State of Nevada. This state was selected for the study because supersonic military flight operations have been carried out in Nevada, primarily within the boundaries of the Tactical Fighter Weapons Center (TFWC) Range Complex near Las Vegas, longer than in any other area within the United States. This volume presents the results of an epidemiological study to search for any health effects. The health effects study was built entirely on a statewide epidemiologic evaluation of mortality for Nevada residents from 1968 to 1983, supplemented by hospital discharge morbidity data. The results of the statewide study revealed no convincing evidence to prove or disprove any relationship between exposure to sonic boom and adverse health phenomena. Statewide, age-adjusted mortality in Nevada is unremarkable compared to national figures. Crude death rates did vary directly with exposure to sonic booms but this relation disappeared when mortality was age-adjusted. Analyses of time trends and bivariate linear regressions failed to yield convincing associations between sonic boom exposure and age-adjusted mortality. Access to a population of weapons-range workers and to their health records, which was an additional key component of the research study, was not granted.

Book Sonic Booms Resulting from Extremely Low altitude Supersonic Flight Measurements and Observations on Houses Livestock and People

Download or read book Sonic Booms Resulting from Extremely Low altitude Supersonic Flight Measurements and Observations on Houses Livestock and People written by C. W. Nixon and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonic booms generated by F-4C aircraft flying low-level terrain- following profiles during Joint Task Force II operations near Tonopah, Nevada, were recorded under and near the flight tracks, and responses of structures, animals, and people were observed. Recorded overpressures up to 144 psf were analyzed, correlated with available aircraft operations data, and compared with data from different aircraft flying similar profiles. Observations of structures, animals, and people were correlated with the measured overpressures. Results include acquisition of near-field recordings of overpressures generated by the F-4C, the finding that some window glass fragments were propelled a short distance rather than falling directly below the window, an instance in which the measured overpressure of a sonic boom 1 mile to the side of the track far exceeded the predicted value, the finding that livestock (undetermined prior exposure to acoustic stimuli in this situation) did not respond adversely to the sonic booms, confirmation that very intense sonic booms do not harm people directly and the reaffirmation that the selection of site locations for low- level supersonic training missions will continue to pose a problem.

Book Commercial Supersonic Technology

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed flight is a major technological challenge for both commercial and business aviation. As a first step in revitalizing efforts by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to achieve the technology objective of high-speed air travel, NASA requested the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study that would identify approaches for achieving breakthroughs in research and technology for commercial supersonic aircraft. Commercial Supersonic Technology documents the results of that effort. This report describes technical areas where ongoing work should be continued and new focused research initiated to enable operational deployment of an environmentally acceptable, economically viable commercial aircraft capable of sustained supersonic flight, including flight over land, at speeds up to approximately Mach 2 in the next 25 years or less.

Book Exploratory Study of the Potential Effects of Exposure to Sonic Boom on Human Health Volume 1 Sonic Boom Environment

Download or read book Exploratory Study of the Potential Effects of Exposure to Sonic Boom on Human Health Volume 1 Sonic Boom Environment written by C. Kamerman and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 159 pages. This volume presents estimates of sonic boom environments in the State of Nevada during the period from 1969 to 1983. The estimates are based on an extensive analysis of historical records (from Nellis Air Force Base) of supersonic fighter aircraft operations within the TFWC Range Complex, and on available computerized records of supersonic operations of both fighter and SR-71 aircraft within all areas inside the State of Nevada. These latter computerized records are maintained in a Sonic Boom Inquiry Data Base by the Department of Defense, and are intended to include records of all military or DOD-contractor supersonic flight operations throughout the United States. While gaps in this data base may exist, the estimates of sonic boom environments in this report are considered sufficiently reliable to use in searching for a possible link to health effects.
