Download or read book Effects of Socioeconomic Status on the Educational Aspirations and Expectations of the Lebanese Armenian High School Students written by Lory Harboyan and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examined the effects of socioeconomic status on high school students' educational aspirations and expectations. Two other variables, academic achievement and significant others' influence, were studied as influential factors in students' post-high school destinations. The arguments were based on Hyman's class-differentiated value system, and Sewell's social-psychological model for educational attainment. The target sample was the Lebanese Armenian youth attending Armenian schools in Lebanon. The instrument used to collect the data was a 30-item questionnaire that was answered by 211 Lebanese Armenian eleventh grade students. Results of the stepwise regression analyses showed that socioeconomic status had some significant predictive power over students' educational aspirations and expectations. Reported academic achievement-mainly the official Brevet examination scores-and significant others' influence were also related to the subjects' post-high school plans.

Book A Study of the Attitudes Toward Education Perception of the General Goals of Education and Educational Behaviors of High School Students in a Civil War Setting

Download or read book A Study of the Attitudes Toward Education Perception of the General Goals of Education and Educational Behaviors of High School Students in a Civil War Setting written by Maha Abou Marak Broum and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate how high school students view the v alue and the general goals of education, and how they behave in schools in a civ il war setting. The data were collected in Lebanon using a survey design and the cluster sample technique, where a questionnaire was distributed in different Le banese high schools (Public and private; for boys, for girls and co-ed.). Result s show that Lebanese high school students value education and know it is more im portant that most people think especially in developing the country. In spite of this, they have expressed that they do not find any relation between the educat ion they get and the realities of the world. Most prominent in students' respons es is that they do not aspire to high levels of education. The difference should be distinct between aspirations and realities, and respondents seem to be consi dering the difficulties they face in fulfilling their aspirations. Materialistic values of war, such as money and power, encourage them to work in business. Fin ancial tightness has also had an effect on many good students urging them to dro pout. In general, educators should not expect students to give to their full cap acities when it is difficult to provide these students with food, shelter and se curity. The results were not compared to those of America's since the characteri stics of the two samples differ (In America, it was a survey of public opinion w hile in Lebanon it was the opinion of students). Neither were results compared t o any other research results in Lebanon since no previous research has dealt wit h this or any similar topic before.

Download or read book The Effect of Socio economic Status on Academic Achievement written by Jennifer Elizabeth Barry and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Author's abstract] This study addresses the increasing importance of student test scores by examining the different factors that influence test scores. Composite test scores of tenth grade students from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 are examined using a four-part model which includes student role performance, school, family, and peer factors. Ordinary Least Squares analysis indicates that the strongest predictor of student test scores is socioeconomic status, resulting in a statistically significant increase in the standardized coefficient of .224 points. These results support previous research and possible directions for public policy are given.
