Traditional Danish Proverb This bit of Danish folk wisdom expresses an idea underlying much of the current thinking about social support. While the clinical literature has for a long time recognized the deleterious effects of unwholesome social relationships, only more recently has the focus broadened to include the positive side of social interaction, those interpersonal ties that are desired, rewarding, and protective. This book contains theoretical and research contributions by a group of scholars who are charting this side of the social spectrum. Evidence is increasing that maladaptive ways of thinking and behaving occur disproportionately among people with few social supports. Rather than sapping self-reliance, strong ties with others particularly family members seem to encourage it. Reliance on others and self-reliance are not only compatible but complementary to one another. While the mechanism by which an intimate relationship is protective has yet to be worked out, the following factors seem to be involved: intimacy, social integration through shared concerns, reassurance of worth, the opportunity to be nurtured by others, a sense of reliable alliance, and guidance. The major advance that is taking place in the literature on social support is that reliance is being -placed less on anecdotal and clinical evidence and more on empirical inquiry. The chapters of this book reflect this important development and identify the frontiers that are currently being explored.

It also determined if there were a combination of variables that contribute to social support. The independent variables included interpersonal orientation, sense of identity, adjustment to college, grade point average, gender of subject, and participation in extracurricular activities. The sample consisted of freshmen who lived in coeducational halls, single sex halls and in off-campus housing. These subjects completed the inventory of Social Support Behavior, the Erwin Identity Scale, the College Freshmen Adjustment Scale and the Interpersonal Orientation Scale. Of the 515 surveys distributed, 305 (50%) were returned. One-way analysis of variance compared the levels of social support in the three different living groups. Correlation coefficients were used to determine if significant relationships existed between social support and the independent variables. Multiple regression was used to determine which variables were the best predictors of social support. Results indicated a significant difference in the level of social support experienced by the living groups. Significant relationships existed between social support and the variables of interpersonal orientation and adjustment to college. The regression equation indicated that these two variables were also the best predictors of social support. A negative correlation existed between social support and grade point average. Women in single sex residence halls experienced the greatest degree of social support. Interpersonal orientation and adjustment to college were found to be key variables that influence the level of social support within a residence hall setting. The inverse relationship between grades and social support suggested the importance of peer relationships for the student experiencing academic difficulty.

Book excerpt: The Purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between social support and well-being of student mothers with children living at home. The hypothesis in this study tested the impact of social support on the well-being of student mothers with children living at home. The study sample (N=50) consists of adults (18 years of age or older), who are mothers with children living at home, and are college students. The investigators used an anonymous online survey to administer the standardized measures and used a bivariate analysis model and interval measurements to analyze data obtained in the study. Results determined there was a medium, positive, correlation between social support from a significant other and well-being, with high well-being associated with a higher level of social support from a significant other. The results also indicate, that although the age of children had no impact on social support from significant other, family, and friends, a student mother's well-being is negatively influenced if she has children between the ages of 13-17, in comparison to the other two age variables. The significance of social sup-port from a significant other and the age of children must be emphasized to support the mother and student role. The results from this study can assist social workers in advocating for policies and laws to support student mothers with children living at home.

This study focuses on college students' perceived social support and how it affects their levels of stress that may lead to experiencing various levels of depression. 160 college students participated in this quantitive study. One of the findings of the study was the significant relationship between perceived social support, stress, and depression.
