Book excerpt: Multivariable Modeling and Multivariate Analysis for the Behavioral Sciences shows students how to apply statistical methods to behavioral science data in a sensible manner. Assuming some familiarity with introductory statistics, the book analyzes a host of real-world data to provide useful answers to real-life issues. The author begins by exploring the types and design of behavioral studies. He also explains how models are used in the analysis of data. After describing graphical methods, such as scatterplot matrices, the text covers simple linear regression, locally weighted regression, multiple linear regression, regression diagnostics, the equivalence of regression and ANOVA, the generalized linear model, and logistic regression. The author then discusses aspects of survival analysis, linear mixed effects models for longitudinal data, and the analysis of multivariate data. He also shows how to carry out principal components, factor, and cluster analyses. The final chapter presents approaches to analyzing multivariate observations from several different populations. Through real-life applications of statistical methodology, this book elucidates the implications of behavioral science studies for statistical analysis. It equips behavioral science students with enough statistical tools to help them succeed later on in their careers. Book Like Father Like Daughter unless There is a Son

Download or read book Like Father Like Daughter unless There is a Son written by Umut Oguzoglu and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate the potential role of fathers in females' decision to choose a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) major in college. The main innovation of our paper is to analyze how sibling sex composition affects the probability of being a STEM major in college for females whose fathers are in a STEM occupation. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), we find that, for females, having brother(s) significantly decreases the likelihood of choosing a STEM major in college when their fathers are also in a STEM occupation. The inclusion of variables pertaining to respondents' attitudes toward traditional gender roles, birth order, and the presence of an older brother as well as frequently used cognitive skill measures does not change the results. Thus, the observed effect appears to be driven by change in the college major preferences of females. We replicate the analysis using a more recent data set from the U.S. and data from Australia, and find similar results. Our findings suggest that fathers are much more likely to transmit occupation-specific tastes and preferences to their daughters in the absence of a son potentially, contributing to the persistence of the gender gap in STEM majors in college.

Book The Effect of Congruence of Mothers and Fathers Beliefs Regarding Fathering Roles on Father Involvement

Download or read book The Effect of Congruence of Mothers and Fathers Beliefs Regarding Fathering Roles on Father Involvement written by Kari L. Adamsons and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study was designed to test the influence of the congruence between mothers' and fathers' fathering identity standards on fathers' later involvement with their children. Using two waves of data from the Fragile Families Study of Child Well-being, the effect of identity standard congruence at the time of the child's birth on father involvement one year later was tested using structural equation modeling with 2,107 sets of parents who shared varying relationship statuses (married, cohabiting, romantic noncohabiting, nonromantic). Also tested was whether this effect was mediated by fathers' satisfaction with the father identity and whether parents' relationship status at birth and at one year moderated the effect. Consistent with Burke's (1991, 1997) identity verification model, identity congruence did predict later involvement, such that when identity standards were more congruent, fathers were more involved with their children. Contrary to what was suggested by identity theory, identity satisfaction did not mediate the effect between congruence and involvement, and parents' relationship status only partially moderated the effect. Specifically, the effect of congruence on involvement was not moderated by parents' relationship status, but the association between identity satisfaction and involvement was stronger for noncohabiting fathers than cohabiting fathers. These findings suggest the need for broader conceptualizations of distress within identity theory. Further, it highlights differences between family structures in the ways in which identity translates into behavior -- personal satisfaction with an identity was more strongly associated with involvement when fathers did not reside with their children/children's mothers."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book The Slow Emergence of the new Father

Download or read book The Slow Emergence of the new Father written by Jack K. Day and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the "new father" has been discussed in the literature and popular media for over 25 years. Yet current studies regarding father involvement continue to show that fathers do not contribute equally to childcare and domestic labor, even among parents in dual-income families. Furthermore, as roles within families become less differentiated by gender, fathers' roles remain ambiguous. This study investigates fathers' perceptions of social expectations related to fatherhood, and how expectations inform their roles and identities as fathers. This study uses qualitative data to address three central research questions: (a) Where do men receive messages about expectations of them as fathers? (b) What specific messages do fathers receive? (c) Which messages are most meaningful to fathers? Focus groups were conducted with middle-class fathers (n = 17) in dual-income families from a small college community in the northwestern United States. The findings suggest that messages about fatherhood conveyed through television programs are not meaningful to fathers, even though television often reflects cultural norms and social changes in family life. Many fathers in the study also do not identify with many fathers within their own community. Instead, they largely define their roles based on negotiations with their wives, and they emphasize their desire to participate equally in caring for their children. They also turn to fathers in their most inner circles as important anchors for setting their own expectations and judging their own performance as fathers. Yet fathers suggest that other fathers in their community do not display the same level of commitment to fathering as themselves, and they identify persistent low social expectations for fathers as a culprit in men's failure to fully participate in family life. The problem of low expectations is also connected to what fathers see as a larger problem: one in which there are no larger social expectations or scripts to clarify what it is that men should be doing as fathers besides being much more than providers. This study illustrates the importance of understanding how men construct their identities and make meaning of their roles in relation to other fathers, especially those within their communities, a topic that has received little attention in the literature. It also raises questions about the "new father," a concept that is no longer new but for which progress has clearly been slow. The study offers future directions for research on fatherhood, emphasizing the importance of explaining why fathers' involvement, especially in dual-income families, continues to be unequal relative to mothers. Future research also must account for how a variety of reference groups either support fathers in being more involved or, in contrast, simply perpetuate low-expectations for fathers.
