Book The Effect of the Middle School Band Experience on Participation in High School Band

Download or read book The Effect of the Middle School Band Experience on Participation in High School Band written by Jeremy McMahon and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retention of students in band as they transition from middle school to high school has been a common problem for many years. The purpose of this study was to determine which factors were most influential to students when they considered whether or not to participate in high school band. Eighty-six students currently enrolled in high school band and eleven students who completed middle school band program but did not continue band in high school were surveyed to determine which factors most influenced their decisions. T- Tests were used to compare means. Results indicated that students who participated in optional band activities in middle school were not more likely to continue band in high school. Students who continued in band did so because they wanted to continue playing their instruments. Students who discontinued band in high school identified conflicts with sports, class schedules, and loss of interest as reasons not to pursue band in high school.

Book The Effect of Media on Attitudes of High School Students Toward the School Band and Band Members

Download or read book The Effect of Media on Attitudes of High School Students Toward the School Band and Band Members written by Russell G. McCutcheon and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect was most prominent among younger subjects and those in grades 9 and 10, while older students showed no statistically significant changes. When the two groups were compared via one way ANOVA, there was no statistically significant difference in attitude change between the two groups overall, but significant differences did exist for individual descriptors. Results suggest that media has the power to influence high school students' attitudes toward the school band; potentially impacting recruitment, retention, and the development of a future audience for the art of wind band music.

Book High Musical Achievement in Underserved High School Band Programs

Download or read book High Musical Achievement in Underserved High School Band Programs written by Delton Marcus Brown and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although information is available detailing methods and strategies for high achievement in school band programs, very little is synthesized specifically addressing high schools in urban, inner-city, and other underserved student populations. This study explores the effects of cultural responsiveness, director-student relationships, and establishing and maintaining high standards on student motivation and overall program achievement. The data collected in this study originate from five Texas band directors in minority-majority programs where the school comprises a student population with over 60 percent eligibility for free and/or reduced lunch. These directors have all made significant achievements at the high school level in the state of Texas and have received recognition at the national level. For comparative purposes, all directors also maintain experience in the more affluent suburban situations. Furthermore, in most instances, the programs examined have shifted from being highly successful majority White suburban schools to now minority-majority urban program attempting to maintain or recapture past successes. These themes, while explicitly targeting urban/inner-city programs, are useful for band directors in all settings, as the strategies and methods examined may be effective in all high school band situations.

Book High School Band Communities of Practice During COVID 19

Download or read book High School Band Communities of Practice During COVID 19 written by Bethany J. Nickel and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 global pandemic altered PK-12 school music instruction in 2020-2021. The purpose of this multiple case study was to examine teaching and learning practices in high school band classrooms that were modified due to COVID-19. The research questions included (a) How do high school band teachers approach, construct, and adapt to coronavirus-era music teaching? (b) How do high school band students receive, describe, and adapt to coronavirus-era music learning? (c) How do high school band teachers and students work collaboratively toward building social and musical connections in the coronavirus-era music classroom? (d) What aspects of coronavirus-era band education do participants believe will shape future music classrooms? The research questions and analysis were developed using the theoretical framework of Communities of Practice Theory (Wenger, 1998). Participants included high school band teachers and students. Three high school band director participants were selected based on pre-determined criteria: that they had taught for 3 or more years at their current school with at least 5 total years of band teaching experience. The band students at the same three high schools were eligible to participate. Data was collected remotely and included interviews, observations, and journal entries. Data was analyzed within each case to describe the specific experiences of each band teacher and student participant. Cross-case analysis was then completed to determine similarities, differences, and unique qualities between the three cases. Themes from individual cases regarded band teacher strategies in remote and hybrid learning formats and how band teachers and students engaged in band camaraderie during COVID-19. Cross-case analysis produced overarching themes; including Responding to Student Needs, Self-Motivated vs. Group-Motivated, Hybrid Band Community, and Predictions for the Future. The data yielded four assertions regarding the experience of high school band teachers and students during COVID-19: the suitability of remote and hybrid instruction for individual music instruction and independence in learning, that COVID-19 cancellations led to flexibility in designing band instruction, and that social interaction is integral to learning in high school band. Implications for the music education field were also addressed.

Book The Effects of Learning Practices on Motivation and Engagement Among High School Insturmentalists

Download or read book The Effects of Learning Practices on Motivation and Engagement Among High School Insturmentalists written by David Scalise and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare student motivation and student engagement in music making across two groups of high school students. The first group of students (n = 27) was enrolled exclusively in a curricular band ensemble that primarily uses traditional, teacher-centered learning practices (TCLP). The second group (n = 16) was from the same school and enrolled in an extra-curricular orchestral ensemble that incorporates informal learning practices (ILP; Green, 2006) into the experience. Student surveys, the Music Self-Determination Scale (MacIntyre & Potter, 2014), and the Willingness to Play Scale (MacIntyre & Potter, 2014) were used to capture student motivation and musical engagement. T-tests were used to determine whether statistically significant and meaningful differences existed between groups; multivariate regressions were used to predict student engagement in music making activities based on the interaction between learning practice (TCLP vs. ILP) and motivation type (intrinsic, integrated, introjected, and extrinsic regulation). Results suggested several benefits to student participation in groups that emphasize informal learning, including a statistically significant increase in student- reported desire to engage in music making outside the classroom for students enrolled in the ILP group relative to students enrolled in the TCLP group. In addition, participation in the ILP group (as opposed to the TCLP group) was particularly beneficial in fostering a desire to engage in music making activities for students who reported low levels of intrinsic or integrated regulation; these findings were also significant, yielding p-values of less than 0.05. Finally, participation in the ILP group was found to significantly increase student willingness to perform musically, so long as the student reported high levels of integrated motivation. However, students who participated in the ILP group and reported low levels of integrated motivation were significantly less willing to perform musically, compared to both high-integrated motivation students enrolled in the ILP group and low-integrated motivation students enrolled in the TCLP group. I hope that the current study fosters future research on the role of music teaching style and student motivation across various behavioral, cognitive, and emotional outcomes relevant to the field of music education.

Book Motivation and Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book Motivation and Second Language Acquisition written by Robert C. Gardner and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a historical and empirical account, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the socio-educational model of second language acquisition. This approach to understanding motivational variables that promote success in the learning of a second or foreign language - distinguishing between language classroom motivation and language learning motivation - is a major one in the history of this field of research. Chapters include a discussion of the definition and measurement of motivation; historical foundations of the model; recent studies with the International Attitude Motivation Test Battery for English as a foreign language in different countries; the implications of the model to the classroom context; and a discussion of criticisms and misconceptions of the model. The book provides graduate students and researchers with unique coverage of this research-oriented approach as well as serving as a source book for the area. It is ideal for courses on motivation in second language learning, or as a supplemental text for research-oriented courses in applied linguistics, educational psychology, or language research in general.
