Book The Effects of Processing Residual Stresses on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Structural Materials

Download or read book The Effects of Processing Residual Stresses on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Structural Materials written by Christopher James Lammi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Residual stresses are a common and often undesired result of material processing, introduced through non-linear deformation and/or phase transformation of material under mechanical or thermo-mechanical loading. These macro stresses alter mechanical properties and the intrinsic fatigue crack growth characteristics of the material. Residual stress artifacts can introduce inconsistencies and significant errors when the true material behavior is needed for material development and optimization and for structural component design. The effects of quenching residual stresses on fatigue crack propagation behavior of various materials were investigated. In parallel, residual stresses similar in magnitude and distribution with the quenching residual stresses were generated using mechanical processes to decouple the effects of residual stresses from microstructural effects. Mechanical residual stress distributions predicted by 3D elastic-plastic finite element analysis showed good agreement with the stresses measured on fatigue crack growth testing specimens using fracture mechanics approaches. Crack propagation characteristics in fields with low and high residual stresses were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy, and the effects of residual stress on crack path behavior were assessed. An original residual stress analytical correction to fatigue crack growth data was developed, compared to existing corrective methodologies, and validated using residual stress free data. Overall, the work provides tools to understand, control, and correct the effects of processing residual stresses on fatigue crack growth for accurate fatigue critical design and life predictions.

Book Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue and Fracture Testing and Incorporation of Results Into Design

Download or read book Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue and Fracture Testing and Incorporation of Results Into Design written by Michael R. Mitchell and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eleven peer-reviewed papers, written by experts in their field, provide an understanding of residual stresses, fatigue crack growth, fatigue lifetime predictions, and their effect on structural integrity. Residual stresses can be present due to processing and manufacturing of materials and structures, so it is imperative to understand how and why they can influence the test data that we used in structural design methodologies. Residual stresses may also be intentionally engineered into structures in attempts to improve fatigue life, and it is equally important that designers understand how to account for these potential effects on fatigue life."--Publisher's website.

Book Effects of Residual Stress on Fatigue Crack Propagation

Download or read book Effects of Residual Stress on Fatigue Crack Propagation written by DV. Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results on the effects of compressive and tensile residual stresses on Mode I fatigue crack growth are briefly reviewed. Prediction methods that attempt to account for the observed effects are compared. Current limitations of the methods and their relative advantages and drawbacks for use in design analysis are discussed. The possible role of residual stress re-equilibration on growth behavior, caused by crack extension itself, is also discussed.

Book Analysis of Welded Structures

Download or read book Analysis of Welded Structures written by Koichi Masubuchi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Welded Structures: Residual Stresses, Distortion, and their Consequences encompasses several topics related to design and fabrication of welded structures, particularly residual stresses and distortion, as well as their consequences. This book first introduces the subject by presenting the advantages and disadvantages of welded structures, as well as the historical overview of the topic and predicted trends. Then, this text considers residual stresses, heat flow, distortion, fracture toughness, and brittle and fatigue fractures of weldments. This selection concludes by discussing the effects of distortion and residual stresses on buckling strength of welded structures and effects of weld defects on service behavior. This book also provides supplementary discussions on some related and selected subjects. This text will be invaluable to metallurgists, welders, and students of metallurgy and welding.

Book Effect of residual stresses on the fatigue crack propagation in welded joints

Download or read book Effect of residual stresses on the fatigue crack propagation in welded joints written by Nenad Gubeljak and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of residual stress on the fatigue crack growth was investigated for cyclic tension. Three-point bend specimens were used with through thickness notches at the center line of the welded joint. The experiments were performed for different load amplitudes and load ratios under conditions of small-scale yielding. The influence of the residual stresses on fatigue crack growth was estimated by experimentally observed fatigue crack growth rate and measurement of residual stresses at the surface of specimen. This paper describes an approach taken in two models to estimate the residual stress effect on fatigue crack propagation and to predict remaining service life of a welded structure.

Book Tubular Structures XIII

Download or read book Tubular Structures XIII written by Ben Young and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a series of test results carried out on elliptical Concrete-Filled Tube (CFT) columns. The tests were conducted to investigate the effects of variations of concrete strength and column slenderness on the behaviour and axial strength of the columns. The experimental study was carried out on ten specimens of short and long columns with Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC). One elliptical steel section was used with three different typical concrete strengths to determine the reduction of column strength with the increase in column length. All specimens were tested to failure to assess their load carrying capacity, deformation and structural behaviour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The failure of any welded joint is at best inconvenient and at worst can lead to catastrophic accidents. Fracture and fatigue of welded joints and structures analyses the processes and causes of fracture and fatigue, focusing on how the failure of welded joints and structures can be predicted and minimised in the design process.Part one concentrates on analysing fracture of welded joints and structures, with chapters on constraint-based fracture mechanics for predicting joint failure, fracture assessment methods and the use of fracture mechanics in the fatigue analysis of welded joints.
