Book Effects of Back pressure Saturation Techniques on Results of R Triaxial Compression Tests

Download or read book Effects of Back pressure Saturation Techniques on Results of R Triaxial Compression Tests written by Robert T. Donaghe and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corps of Engineers (CE) soil laboratories achieve 100 percent saturation of R and R triaxial compression test specimens by the use of back pressure applied in small increments concurrently with increase in chamber pressure with adequate time between increments to permit equalization of pore-water pressure throughout the specimen. The objective of this procedure is to apply sufficient pressure on the pore water and pore air so that the air is dissolved in the pore water without significantly prestressing (overconsolidating) the specimen. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the effects of the magnitude of back pressure and the procedure by which it is applied on the stress deformation characteristics of soils. The objectives were achieved by comparing results of tests performed on compacted specimens of Vicksburg loess (clayey silt (ML)) and Vicksburg buckshot (plastic clay (CH)) in which the back-pressure saturation procedure was varied and results of tests performed on specimens of Vicksburg buckshot consolidated from a slurry in which the magnitude of the total back pressure was varied. The results indicate that variations in the technique of applying back pressure may significantly affect test results.

Book Effects of Anisotropic Versus Isotropic Consolidation in Consolidated undrained Triaxial Compression Tests of Cohesive Soils

Download or read book Effects of Anisotropic Versus Isotropic Consolidation in Consolidated undrained Triaxial Compression Tests of Cohesive Soils written by Frank C. Townsend and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a series of consolidated-undrained (CU) triaxial compression tests performed on normally consolidated and overconsolidated specimes of two clays consolidated both isotropically (ICU tests) and anisotropically (ACU tests) are presented and analyzed in this report. The specimens were trimmed from samples of Vicksburg Buckshot clay (LL = 57) and a clay from the East Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee (EABPL) project area (LL = 79), both of which had been consolidated from a slurry in large-diameter consolidometers under a maximum vertical consolidation pressure of 3.0 kg/sq cm. Data presented include stress-strain curves, pore pressure observations, final water content distributions within the specimens, and shear strength envelopes based on total and effective stresses. Test results indicate that the change in volume during consolidation and the water content at the end of consolidation are not a unique function of the vertical consolidation stresses but are related to the mean effective consolidation stress. Total stress envelopes based on Taylor's method of deriving strengths of anisotropically consolidated specimens from test results obtained from isotropically consolidated specimens slightly underestimate observed values. In this context, Taylor's method is an appropriate means of predicting strengths for various K sub c ratios from conventional ICU tests. Use of hyperbolic stress-strain relationships derived from ICU tests in finite element codes for ACU conditions will lead to erroneous results. Further testing of anisotropically consolidated soils under stress systems that better simulate in situ conditions is needed.

Book Pressure deformation Measurements in Earth

Download or read book Pressure deformation Measurements in Earth written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1: Studies have been conducted in which lateral pressures due to uniformly distributed loads over finite areas on the soil backfill have been measured. This paper contains a resume of earlier research and a detailed presentation of data obtained in the recent studies, together with a correlation with the Boussinesq theory. Paper 2: A large triaxial apparatus was developed in connection with studies of the distribution of stresses and strains in soil masses. Paper 3: A number of field measurements were made to determine the pressures and corresponding deflections for an arch type steel lined tunnel under storage piles of crushed stone. Paper 4: Data are presented comparing the deformation characteristics in repeated load tests of specimens of two soils having similar stress-strain relationships in normal compression tests.

Book Resilient and Permanent Characteristics of Reinforced Granular Materials by Repeated Load Triaxial Tests

Download or read book Resilient and Permanent Characteristics of Reinforced Granular Materials by Repeated Load Triaxial Tests written by F. Moghaddas-Nejad and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drained repeated load triaxial compression tests were conducted to investigate the resilient and permanent stress-strain behavior of two granular materials reinforced by a geogrid. In order to obtain more accurate measurement of recoverable deformation, an on-sample measuring method was utilized. Because devices for measuring the axial and lateral deformation are attached to the specimen, the confining pressure is provided by applying a vacuum within the specimen. The effect of a geogrid in reducing the permanent deformation of soils at various combinations of deviator and confining stress is investigated and discussed. The test results indicate that a geogrid can play a significant role in reduction of deformation of the triaxial specimen, and could, therefore, be expected to reduce deformations in the field. However, the results obtained for resilient deformations show that the geogrid does not have a considerable influence on the resilient modulus of the two types of soil (sand and fine gravel) that were tested.
