Book Transitions Between Sexual Systems

Download or read book Transitions Between Sexual Systems written by Janet L. Leonard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on explaining the distribution of sexual systems (simultaneous hermaphroditism, sequential hermaphroditism, environmental sex determination, dioecy, androdioecy, etc.) among taxa, which remains a major challenge in evolutionary biology. Although significant advances have been made for angiosperms, there is not yet a theory that predicts the sexual system for the majority of animal taxa, and other taxa of plants also remain poorly understood. The problem, particularly for animals, is that sexual systems can be very conservative, with whole phyla and classes being characterized by a single sexual system; for example essentially the whole phylum Platyhelminthes is simultaneously hermaphroditic, whereas the Insecta (Hexapoda) and the Tetrapoda among the vertebrates, are exclusively dioecious. Sex allocation theory on the other hand, suggests that sexual systems should be highly responsive to evolution, changing with population density, life span, patterns of resource availability, etc. The book provides an overview of the topic and then presents a series of chapters, each dealing with a taxon with substantial lability in sexual system in order to identify the factors associated with changes in sexual system in each case. By doing so, the authors reveal factors that have not been considered in formal theory but seem to have a major impact on transitions between sexual systems. This book appeals to a wide readership in fields from zoology and evolutionary biology to botany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1966 Congress passed the National Sea Grant College Program Act to promote marine research, education, and extension services in institutions along the nation's ocean and Great Lakes coasts. In Maryland a Sea Grant Program -- a partnership among federal and state governments, universities, and industries -- began in 1977, and in 1982 the University of Maryland was named the nation's seventeenth Sea Grant College. The Maryland Sea Grant College focuses its efforts on the Chesapeake Bay, with emphasis on the marine concerns of fisheries, seafood technology, and environmental quality. The first comprehensive review of the biology of the eastern oyster in more than thirty years. The twenty-one chapters synthesize every aspect of oyster biology -- for instance, general anatomy, physiology, the circulatory system, reproduction, genetics, diseases -- and issues related to management and aquaculture.

Book Reproductive Strategy of Marine Bivalves and Echinoderms

Download or read book Reproductive Strategy of Marine Bivalves and Echinoderms written by V. L. Kasyanov and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main objectives of this work is to analyze the data on reproduction and growth that might be useful in practical aquaculture and the industry. Hence, the scope of investigations on echinoderms has been confined to economically important species - sea cucumbers, sea urchins and sea stars. Members of the first two classes, such as bivalves, represent objects of aquaculture and industry, while sea stars damage them by attacking molluscs. This wide-ranging material has been presented within a conceptual framework of types of reproductive strategy, classified as: planktotrophic larval, lecithotrophic larval and lecithotrophic embryonic. The book provides a detailed description of planktotrphic larval reproductive strategy and describes its consequences on the ecology, population and other specific features.

Book Origin and Evolutionary Radiation of the Mollusca

Download or read book Origin and Evolutionary Radiation of the Mollusca written by Malacological Society of London. Centenary Symposium and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mollusca are a large, diverse, and economically important group that ranges from slugs and snails through clams and oysters to octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. They are evolutionarily ancient and better known than most invertebrate groups because of their calcareous skeletons, which has led to their excellent preservation as fossils. This is a state-of-the-art summary of research into Molluscs and their evolution, including recent developments in phylogenetic analysis and molecular techniques. Since the last book on this topic was published in 1985, the vast amount of updated information found here should be on the bookshelf of every zoologist, evolutionary biologist, and taxonomist.
