Book The Effect of the Use of Technology on Student Motivation and Achievement in the Elementary Music Classroom

Download or read book The Effect of the Use of Technology on Student Motivation and Achievement in the Elementary Music Classroom written by Erin Kronzek and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many of us, technology is an essential element of our daily routines and life without it is completely unimaginable. As technology continues to become integrated in all aspects of society, the way that we educate our students must evolve accordingly. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the use of technology on student motivation and achievement in elementary music class. Two classrooms of second grade students at a South Florida school were given pre-tests and post-test to gauge their motivation and note-reading knowledge. One class, the control group, was taught basic note-reading techniques through a traditional teaching approach. A second class, the experimental group, was taught through the use of iPads. Following data analysis, it was determined that the experimental class had a significant (p = .007) increase in student motivation after learning with iPads. The control group's motivation toward music decreased, although the decrease was not significant (p = .476.) Both classes showed a significant improvement in achievement following their note-reading lessons (Experimental: (p = .002); Control: (p =. 005.) The post-test motivation and achievement scores of the two classes were also compared, however no significant difference was found between the two classes for the motivation (p = .11) or achievement (p = .48) tests. Though technology may be a tool useful for motivating some students, the teacher and pedagogical approaches utilized are of utmost importance. Future research might explore an extended number of lessons with the students. Researchers might also investigate the effects of different types of technology on student learning and on students of varying age groups.

Download or read book A Case Study of the Integration of SmartMusic Into Three Middle School Band Classrooms Found in Upstate South Carolina written by Carla Fowler Tucker and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology is at the forefront of education as teachers expand their instructional strategies to incorporate technology in the hope of educating students to be 21st century learners. As more and more districts encourage educators to use technology in all classrooms, teachers search to find programs that will help their students in their particular subjects. The band classroom is not immune to this push in education; therefore, we find band directors searching for a tool to use in their band rooms. -- This study looked at a web-based music program designed for performance-based groups. The purpose of the study was to examine three middle school band directors and their use of SmartMusic® in their day-to-day classroom activities. Specifically, this case study looked at the various implementation avenues, the process teachers followed to use the program in the band setting, barriers to using the program, and successful strategies used by teachers. Through observations, interviews, and artifacts the researcher was able to paint a holistic picture of each teacher and how they used SmartMusic® in their classroom. -- Conclusions were drawn that each implementation process was found to be similar. The actual utilization of SmartMusic® was found to vary from teacher to teacher. Students enjoyed using the program and were a source of encouragement for teachers to continue use of SmartMusic®, thus increasing the self-efficacy of teachers. Barriers were rare, and success was found when teachers used the program consistently. Professional development was recommended for teachers using the program due to the lack thereof and at teachers’ requests. Future studies include the precise utilization of the program and the effect using SmartMusic® has on a whole-group setting.

Book Reflections on Lessons Learned During COVID 19

Download or read book Reflections on Lessons Learned During COVID 19 written by McKinley Stinson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increased accessibility regarding instructional technology for music education classrooms, an achievement disparity continued to broaden amid COVID-19. When school districts began to close their buildings, curriculum and instruction transitioned to online platforms. Varied student and teacher participation indicated multiple challenges. Experimental virtual learning concluded the 2019–2020 school year and continued in variations through summer 2021. This qualitative historical study examined perspectives concerning teaching during COVID-19 as held by music teachers, secondary band directors, school administrators, and university music educators. Individuals reflected on four periods between 2019–2021. The initial phase detailed instructional and experiential goals for the 2019–2020 school year. The survey participants shared strategies and philosophies for adapting the curriculum once schools closed in March 2020. The planning phase leading up to the 2020–2021 school year included preparations and goals for virtual, in-person, asynchronous, and synchronous learning. Last, participants reviewed the events and practices utilized during the pandemic from March 2020 to February 2022. Although a crisis of COVID-19’s magnitude may not impact formal education to this extent again, evaluating areas of concern for veteran and new teachers is critical to diminishing achievement inconsistencies. This study may address similar questions of other disciplines related to student motivation, the impact of culture and environment during virtual learning experiences and developing philosophies and filters for discerning which practices should remain, evolve, or be eradicated.

Conrad and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research question addressed in this project is, how can the implementation of SmartMusic technology in the middle school orchestra impact the motivation and skill development of the string learner? This capstone researches different types of motivation including hope, success, community and technology and how these types of incentives influence student learning in the classroom. Key influences include Alfie Kohn, an expert in the field of motivational strategies in education, and Marc Prensky, an authority on modern technology. Five students were observed as they used SmartMusic technology during orchestra rehearsals and individual lessons. The students also participated in a survey at the end of the three weeks of research. The study found that using SmartMusic was a motivating factor for the students and they felt they improved on their instruments because they used the SmartMusic program.

Book Motivating Young Adolescents in Middle School General Music

Download or read book Motivating Young Adolescents in Middle School General Music written by Kelsey Kordella Giotta and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this instrumental case study was to examine the teaching and classroom of a middle school general music teacher through the lens of self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) in order to explore how she encouraged and developed student motivation. Data were generated through interviews, observations, field notes, and documents collected at a suburban middle school in the Midwest. Analysis of the data revealed the middle school general music teacher at this school encouraged and fostered motivation through proactive classroom management, active music making, content that was relevant and engaging to students, and a physically and emotionally safe classroom environment. Based on implications from this study, suggestions were made for ways that music educators can engage and motivate middle school general music students and how the profession as a whole can provide better resources and support for music educators working with young adolescents.

Book Using Technology with Classroom Instruction That Works

Download or read book Using Technology with Classroom Instruction That Works written by Howard Pitler and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology is ubiquitous, and its potential to transform learning is immense. The first edition of Using Technology with Classroom Instruction That Works answered some vital questions about 21st century teaching and learning: What are the best ways to incorporate technology into the curriculum? What kinds of technology will best support particular learning tasks and objectives? How does a teacher ensure that technology use will enhance instruction rather than distract from it? This revised and updated second edition of that best-selling book provides fresh answers to these critical questions, taking into account the enormous technological advances that have occurred since the first edition was published, including the proliferation of social networks, mobile devices, and web-based multimedia tools. It also builds on the up-to-date research and instructional planning framework featured in the new edition of Classroom Instruction That Works, outlining the most appropriate technology applications and resources for all nine categories of effective instructional strategies: * Setting objectives and providing feedback * Reinforcing effort and providing recognition * Cooperative learning * Cues, questions, and advance organizers * Nonlinguistic representations * Summarizing and note taking * Assigning homework and providing practice * Identifying similarities and differences * Generating and testing hypotheses Each strategy-focused chapter features examples—across grade levels and subject areas, and drawn from real-life lesson plans and projects—of teachers integrating relevant technology in the classroom in ways that are engaging and inspiring to students. The authors also recommend dozens of word processing applications, spreadsheet generators, educational games, data collection tools, and online resources that can help make lessons more fun, more challenging, and—most of all—more effective.

Book The Effect of Differentiated Musical Parts on the On task Behavior Classroom Performance Time and Attitude of Students in an Inclusive Urban Middle School Band Class

Download or read book The Effect of Differentiated Musical Parts on the On task Behavior Classroom Performance Time and Attitude of Students in an Inclusive Urban Middle School Band Class written by David Alan Perry and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of differentiated music on classroom behaviors and attitudes of middle school band members. Special, differentiated music, was written to find out if the level of class participation (students on task) would increase with its use. The differentiated music consisted of three parts from which each player could choose; a simple two note harmony, melody, and an advanced counterpoint. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade band classes were included in the study. A series of eight class sessions, fifteen minutes in length from each grade, were videotaped over a period of four weeks on successive Tuesdays and Thursdays. Baseline and treatment sessions were established with the baseline consisting of the use of typical band method material, and the treatment including the use of differentiated music. Each grade level ran a different length of baseline and treatment time periods. Data were collected to measure the percent of students on task for baseline and treatment for each grade level. Other areas evaluated included the amount of class time spent playing, teaching, and dealing with discipline and interruptions. Teacher comments were measured, as was survey information from the students regarding their enjoyment levels and self assessment. The use of the differentiated music did not show an increase in the number of students participating as had been expected. Rather the discipline of the students became the prominent issue. Correlations showed that as negative behaviors increased, attitude toward the class and personal achievement decreased. Future research in this area should be done in a setting and through instruction where student attention and relatively good discipline is maintained. If the classroom discipline problem area could be reduced or eliminated, comparison of differentiated music versus other types of materials might yield different results.
