Book Synthesis of High Purity Sinterable Silicon Carbide Powder

Download or read book Synthesis of High Purity Sinterable Silicon Carbide Powder written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High purity, submicron silicon carbide powders were produced via gas phase synthesis using a hydrogen/argon plasma. Two test facilities were constructed, a bench-scale unit and a larger pilot scale reactor. Three candidate silicon sources were evaluated: silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4), dimethyldichlorosilane ((CH3)2SiCl2) and methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3). Product powders were evaluated on the basis of pressureless sinterability, surface area, agglomeration, particle size distribution, phase distribution and chemistry. Three commercial powders, Starck A10, Starck B10, and Carborundum submicron alpha silicon carbide, were also evaluated for comparison to the product powders. Powders were reproducibly synthesized at a rate of one pound per hour for standard run times of five hours. Product powders exhibited chemical and physical properties equal to or exceeding the commercial powders evaluated. In limited attempts to pressureless sinter the product powders, densities of 91% of theoretical were obtained with as-produced powder. Post-processing permitted densities in excess of 97% of theoretical. X-ray diffraction of the product indicates that the product powders are primarily beta poly-types, with traces of alpha present. Increased production rates to a target level of seven pounds per hour were not possible due to current transients produced by the pilot scale power supply. Extensive unsuccessful efforts to reduce or eliminate the transients are described. Low recovered product yields resulted from a failure of a product collection filter that was not discovered until the completion of the project.

Book Silicon Carbide Ceramics 1

Download or read book Silicon Carbide Ceramics 1 written by S. Somiya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered by Edward G. Acheson about 1890, silicon carbide is one of the oldest materials and also a new material. It occurs naturally in meteorites, but in very small amounts and is not in a useable state as an industrial material. For industrial require ments, large amounts of silicon carbide must be synthesized by solid state reactions at high temperatures. Silicon carbide has been used for grinding and as an abrasive material since its discovery. During World War II, silicon carbide was used as a heating element; however, it was difficult to obtain high density sintered silicon carbide bodies. In 1974, S. Prochazka reported that the addition of small amounts of boron compounds and carbide were effective in the sintering process to obtain high density. It was then possible to produce high density sintered bodies by pressureless sintering methods in ordinary atmosphere. Since this development, silicon carbide has received great attention as one of the high temperature structural ceramic materials. Since the 1970s, many research papers have appeared which report studies of silicon carbide and silicon nitride for structural ceramics.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbide, Nitride and Boride Materials Synthesis and Processing is a major reference text addressing methods for the synthesis of non-oxides. Each chapter has been written by an expert practising in the subject area, affiliated with industry, academia or government research, thus providing a broad perspective of information for the reader. The subject matter ranges from materials properties and applications to methods of synthesis including pre- and post-synthesis processing. Although most of the text is concerned with the synthesis of powders, chapters are included for other materials such as whiskers, platelets, fibres and coatings. Carbide, Nitride and Boride Materials Synthesis and Processing is a comprehensive overview of the subject and is suitable for practitioners in the industry as well as those looking for an introduction to the field. It will be of interest to chemical, mechanical and ceramic engineers, materials scientists and chemists in both university and industrial environments working on or with refractory carbides, nitrides and borides.

Book MAX Phases and Ultra High Temperature Ceramics for Extreme Environments

Book Plasma Synthesis of Ultrafine Silicon Carbide Powders

Download or read book Plasma Synthesis of Ultrafine Silicon Carbide Powders written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feasibility study for the plasma synthesis of high purity ultrafine powders of silicon carbide, with special attention given to raw material and energy cost in the selection of the reaction route and the reactor design used. Priority was given to the possible use of relatively low-cost raw materials such as silica or elemental silicon as starting material in favour of more expensive traditional feedstocks such as silane or silicon tetrachloride used by earlier investigations in this field. The proposed approach is based on the direct carburization of silicon vapour/condensed droplets using methane as quench gas.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-pressure, high-temperature furnace system is described for crystal growth experiments using crucibles up to 13 cm in diameter and 26 cm high. The vertical temperature gradient is electronically controlled during growth such that the ends of the crucible can be maintained at temperatures above or below the crucible center. Temperatures up to 2800C can be maintained at pressures up to 50 atmospheres. A vacuum capability up to .000001 torr at 1800C has been incorporated into the system. Single crystals of alpha silicon carbide grown in this system at 2600C are described to illustrate its use. (Author).
