Book excerpt: "Core skills for children in school require that they perform simple and conditional discrimination tasks. Simple and conditional discriminations can be taught using trial-and-error or errorless teaching procedures. The current study evaluated the use of two different errorless prompting procedures to teach conditional discriminations to typically developing children, and children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Six typically developing children and two children diagnosed with an ASD were taught relations among arbitrary visual stimuli using a three-choice matching-to-sample procedure. All participants were exposed to two prompt conditions: the first required simple discriminative control (SD condition), and the second required conditional discriminative control (CD condition). During the SD condition, the sample and correct comparison stimuli were both presented in the same color (e.g., sample and correct comparison stimuli were red) and the other two comparison stimuli (S-) were black. During the CD condition, the three comparison stimuli were presented in different colors (e.g., red, green, and blue). The sample stimulus was always presented in the same color as the correct comparison. For both SD and CD conditions, the luminance of the color prompt was faded to black over five steps. Results indicated that 7 of 8 participants acquired the conditional discriminations quicker with the prompts requiring conditional discriminative control and thus were consistent with the task taught. One child diagnosed with ASD acquired the discriminations quicker with the prompt requiring simple discriminative control." -- Abstract, p.2.
