Book Seed Priming and Post priming Treatment Effects on Germination Rates and Longevity

Download or read book Seed Priming and Post priming Treatment Effects on Germination Rates and Longevity written by Zhi Li and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While seed priming (controlled hydration followed by drying) enhances seed germination rates, the longevity of primed seeds in storage is often reduced. Post-priming treatments involving a slow drying process to cause a partial reduction in seed moisture content prior to complete drying can restore longevity in several species compared to rapid drying after priming. The goal of this project is to develop solid matrix priming and post-priming protocols that improve seed germination performance without penalizing potential seed quality or longevity after storage. A solid matrix-based priming protocol (10 g of seeds incubated for 2 days with 12 mL of water and 20 g of AGSORBR® clay matrix followed by rapid drying) was developed for two tomato seed lots that advanced germination timing, although it accelerated loss of seed quality during storage. Similar experiments with pepper and onion seeds encountered some initial complications, including low seed viability and susceptibility to fungal growth, so experiments were continued only with tomato seeds. For both tomato seed lots (T1 and T2), two days of priming advanced germination timing but had the maximum adverse effect on subsequent storage life. After the priming but before drying, post-priming treatments were conducted on the two tomato seed lots by adding additional amounts of clay matrix (2, 4, or 6 g) into the priming treatment to reduce seed moisture content and incubating for two additional days before drying to 8% seed moisture content (dry weight basis). Controlled deterioration tests (47% RH and 50°C) were conducted on control seeds and seeds exposed to different priming and post-priming treatments and seed longevities were compared. In this study, ASTEQ Q2 Oxygen Sensing Technology was used to measure the oxygen consumption of individual seeds at frequent intervals during the priming and aging process in lieu of manual radicle emergence observations. The results for determination of priming conditions showed a high correlation between respiration rates and radicle emergence rates in the same conditions. Potential maximum longevity (Pmax) values were estimated from the aging-time model using respiration time course data. Generally, the results of post-priming treatments did not accord with our expectations, for the post-priming treatments did not extend tomato seed longevity to match that of the unprimed seeds. Although some post-priming treatments slightly increased P[subscript max] values for the T2 seed lot compared to the conventional priming treatment, the differences were small. For the T1 seed lot, the restoration treatments did not result in any improvement in longevity compared with the priming-only treatment. Curiously, in some cases there was not a clear decline in germination rates or viability with increasing aging time. Thus, further optimization is needed for post-priming treatments of tomato seeds to restore longevity in storage.

Book Priming Mediated Stress and Cross Stress Tolerance in Crop Plants

Download or read book Priming Mediated Stress and Cross Stress Tolerance in Crop Plants written by Mohammad Anwar Hossain and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Priming-Mediated Stress and Cross-Stress Tolerance in Crop Plants provides the latest, in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms associated with the development of stress and cross-stress tolerance in plants. Plants growing under field conditions are constantly exposed, either sequentially or simultaneously, to many abiotic or biotic stress factors. As a result, many plants have developed unique strategies to respond to ever-changing environmental conditions, enabling them to monitor their surroundings and adjust their metabolic systems to maintain homeostasis. Recently, priming mediated stress and cross-stress tolerance (i.e., greater tolerance to a second, stronger stress after exposure to a different, milder primary stress) have attracted considerable interest within the scientific community as potential means of stress management and for producing stress-resistant crops to aid global food security. Priming-Mediated Stress and Cross-Stress Tolerance in Crop Plants comprehensively reviews the physiological, biochemical, and molecular basis of cross-tolerance phenomena, allowing researchers to develop strategies to enhance crop productivity under stressful conditions and to utilize natural resources more efficiently. The book is a valuable asset for plant and agricultural scientists in corporate or government environments, as well as educators and advanced students looking to promote future research into plant stress tolerance. Provides comprehensive information for developing multiple stress-tolerant crop varieties Includes in-depth physiological, biochemical, and molecular information associated with cross-tolerance Includes contribution from world-leading cross-tolerance research group Presents color images and diagrams for effective communication of key concepts

Book Genetic Analyses of Priming and Aging in Lettuce Lactuca Sativa L Seeds and the Effect of Oxygen on Seed Longevity

Download or read book Genetic Analyses of Priming and Aging in Lettuce Lactuca Sativa L Seeds and the Effect of Oxygen on Seed Longevity written by Andres Ricardo Schwember and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seeds have poor longevity in storage and exhibit thermoinhibition, or failure to germinate above ~25°C. Seed priming (controlled hydration followed by drying) increases the upper temperature limit (UTL) of germination, but also reduces seed longevity. To explore the connections between seed priming and seed aging, quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses of seed priming responses and seed aging were conducted using a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between L. sativa cv. Salinas x L. serriola accession UC96US23. A single QTL that was responsible for 47% of the phenotypic variation in UTL due to priming collocated with Htg6.1, a major QTL from UC96US23 associated with high temperature germination capacity. Introgression of this Htg6.1 locus into the Salinas cultivar enhanced its responsiveness to priming. This locus contains LsNCED4, a gene encoding a key enzyme in the abscisic acid biosynthetic pathway. Primed seeds exhibited reduced expression of LsNCED4 and increased expression of LsGA3ox1 and LsACS1 (genes encoding regulated enzymes in the gibberellin and ethylene biosynthetic pathways, respectively) compared to non-primed seeds when imbibed at high temperatures. As seeds stored under conventional low humidity and temperature conditions lose viability slowly (i.e., over months or years), the controlled deterioration (CD) test often is utilized to study seed longevity by aging seeds rapidly at elevated temperature and relative humidity. Multiple longevity-associated QTLs were identified using both conventional and CD storage conditions in the same RIL population described above grown in two different years. The QTLs varied with both production environments and aging conditions, and no correlation was found between the seed longevity under conventional and CD conditions for either control or primed seeds. Thus, lettuce seed longevity exhibits strong genotype by environment interactions and CD tests may not be predictive of how lettuce seeds would age under conventional storage conditions. As reactive oxygen species are proposed to be involved in seed aging, the longevity of control and primed lettuce and onion (Allium cepa L.) seeds was assessed when stored in ambient and low oxygen atmospheres. Anaerobic conditions extended seed longevity, particularly under conventional storage conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From prehistoric times man has had a pecial s relationship with seed plants - as a source of food, materials for tools, buildings, clothing and pharmaceuticals, and for ornamenting his surroundings for his own delight (probably in that chronological order which, incidentally, also gives some indication ofthe priorities oflife). Today man's most important staple foods are derived directly from seeds as they have been since neolithic times. (It is a sobering thought, as Harlan* has pointed out, that nothing significant has been added to his diet since then. ) From those times he must have learned to collect, conserve and cultivate seeds; and the accumulated experience has been handed down. This book then is part of an ancient tradition, for here we are still primarily concerned with these skills. Seeds are plant propagules comprised of embryos in which growth has been suspended, usually supplied with their own food reserves and protected by special covering layers. Typically they are relatively dry structures compared with other plant tissues and, in this condi tion) they are resistant to the ravages of time and their environment. But resistant is a relative tenn and seeds do deteriorate: the type, the extent and the rapidity of the deterioration, and the factors which control it are important to agronomists, horticulturalists, plant breeders, seedsmen, seed analysts, and those concerned with the conservation of genetic resources.

Book Organic Farming Pest Control and Remediation of Soil Pollutants

Download or read book Organic Farming Pest Control and Remediation of Soil Pollutants written by Eric Lichtfouse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable agriculture is a rapidly growing field aiming at producing food and energy in a sustainable way for humans and their children. Sustainable agriculture is a discipline that addresses current issues such as climate change, increasing food and fuel prices, poor-nation starvation, rich-nation obesity, water pollution, soil erosion, fertility loss, pest control, and biodiversity depletion. Novel, environmentally-friendly solutions are proposed based on integrated knowledge from sciences as diverse as agronomy, soil science, molecular biology, chemistry, toxicology, ecology, economy, and social sciences. Indeed, sustainable agriculture decipher mechanisms of processes that occur from the molecular level to the farming system to the global level at time scales ranging from seconds to centuries. For that, scientists use the system approach that involves studying components and interactions of a whole system to address scientific, economic and social issues. In that respect, sustainable agriculture is not a classical, narrow science. Instead of solving problems using the classical painkiller approach that treats only negative impacts, sustainable agriculture treats problem sources. Because most actual society issues are now intertwined, global, and fast-developing, sustainable agriculture will bring solutions to build a safer world. This book series gathers review articles that analyze current agricultural issues and knowledge, then propose alternative solutions. It will therefore help all scientists, decision-makers, professors, farmers and politicians who wish to build a safe agriculture, energy and food system for future generations.

Book Advances in Seed Priming

Download or read book Advances in Seed Priming written by Amitava Rakshit and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most crop plants grow in environments that are suboptimal, which prevents the plants from attaining their full genetic potential for growth and reproduction. Stress due to abiotic and biotic agents has a significant effect on world food production. Annually, an estimated 15% of global yields are lost, but this figure belies far greater losses for specific food systems and the people whose existence is dependent upon them, particularly in developing countries. Current efforts to mitigate these losses are worryingly over-reliant on the use of sophisticated and costly chemicals /measures with substantial economic and environmental costs, or on the development of efficient and smart crop varieties, which can take decades. What we need is a broad range of safe, robust and equitable solutions for food producers. One under-investigated approach is that of utilizing the crop plant’s innate immune system to resist stress. More specifically, the innate immune system can be sensitized or ‘primed’ to respond more quickly and strongly to protect the plant against stresses. However, a strategy of employing priming in combination with reduced pesticide use can enhance protection, and help to meet commitments to reducing chemical inputs in agriculture. This book discusses in detail different segments of priming in addressing stress factors and traits to increase competitiveness against all odds. Adopting a holistic and systematic approach, it addresses priming to counter climate-change related adverse effects coupled with pest and pathogen related stress on the productivity of crops utilizing natural resources to reap sustainable environmental, economic and social benefits for potential productivity of crops, maintaining synergy between soil, water and plants in ways that mimic nature.
