Download or read book Effects of Planting Date on Outplant Performance of Cold stored and Fresh lifted Black Walnut Red Oak and Silver Maple Seedlings written by F. W. Von Althen and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1986 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the ideal planting season extends only from the end of April to the middle of May, its extension is highly desirable because of manpower and equipment factors as well as location of planting sites and planting quality. To determine if overwinter cold storage could be as effective for other hardwood species as it appears to be for sugar maple, cold-stored and fresh-lifted black walnut, red oak, and silver maple seedlings were planted at two-week intervals from 21 April to 16 June 1981. This report presents the three-year results of seedling survival and height increment and makes recommendations on optimum planting periods for southwestern Ontario.

Download or read book Ontario Hardwood Silviculture Studies Database written by William Graham Cole and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 2003 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication begins with a brief overview of the Ontario Hardwood Silviculture Studies Database version 1.0, which contains descriptive information from over 90 ongoing & historical hardwood silviculture studies & trials. The main section contains an annotated bibliography of 314 publications that are included in the publications section of the Database. Citations are sorted by author's last name and publication date, and include the type of publication and the known location(s) of a hard copy. Appendices include author & subject indexes. Citations were selected for inclusion using the following criteria: the study on which the citation is based occurred in Ontario; the study included some type of silvicultural treatment & measurements of the resulting regeneration success or growth responses; and the study focussed on one or more of the following hardwood species: sugar maple, yellow birch, red oak, American beech, white ash, black cherry, or basswood.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication comprises the proceedings of the first International Conference devoted to the structural roots of trees and woody plants. 'The Supporting Roots - Structure and Function,' 20-24 July 1998, Bordeaux, France. The meeting was held under the auspices ofIUFRO WPS 2. 01. 13 'Root Physiology and Symbiosis,' and its aim was to bring together scientific researchers, foresters and arboriculturalists, to discuss current problems in structural root research and disseminate knowledge to an audience from a wide disciplinary background. For the first time in an international conference, emphasis was placed on presenting recent reseach in the field of tree anchorage mechanics and root biomechanics. The way in which tree stability can be affected by root system symmetry and architecture was addressed, as well as how movement during wind sway can influence the development and shape of woody roots. The role of different nursery and planting techniques was discussed, in relation to effects on root system form and development. Root response to different environmental stresses, including water, temperature, nutrient and mechanical stress was addressed in detail. The structure and function of woody roots was also considered at different levels, from coarse to fine roots, with several papers discussing the interaction between roots and the rhizosphere. One of the conference highlights was the presentation of new methods in root research, by a series of workshops held at LRBB-INRA, Pierroton, on the northern border of the Gascony forest.
