Book excerpt: In the experiments with mixtures containing hydrogeneous molecules there was observed the transfer of pi /sup -/ mesons from p pi /sup -/ mesic atoms, produced by bound hydrogen, to heavy atoms using the slow pi /sup -/ meson beam of the JINR synchrocyclotron. The peculiarities of this process as compared to the transfer of pions in H/sub 2/ + Z mixtures are discussed. (auth) The tetramethyl compounds of Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb were investigated mass spectrometrically using equal conditions. The absolute intensities as a function of electron impact energy, the extrapolated relative intensities of the fragments, and ion yields of fragrnents as a function of ntomic number are found. This study is usetul for determining the behavior of tetramethylekalead in an ion source. (JFP).

Book excerpt: A density functional scheme has been developed for incorporating electron-positron correlation effects into band-structure calculations of positron-annihilation characteristics. The electron and positron densities are determined from a self-consistent set of equations based on a generalized Kohn-Sham scheme. Application of this formalism to defect-free aluminum is described. The results for a two-dimensional angular-correlation spectrum and the positron lifetime show very good agreement with experiment. The method is of general applicability and can be used with any existing self-consistent band-structure scheme.
