Much of this research emphasizes negative findings. Debate over the factors that exacerbate or alleviate these negative findings exists, and prompted investigation in this literature review. Two factors that may determine how children will react to parental divorce are the child's developmental acuity and attachment style at the time of the divorce event. This review explains developmental tasks from a psychosocial and cognitive perspective for developing children from birth to age 18. An understanding of these models can be used to examine how children may be vulnerable to the stresses in a divorcing family, as well as identifying how to help children of all ages become resilient. Research included in this review suggests that a secure attachment and consistent parenting are the best buffers from negative effects. This literature review is intended to be a guide to aid parents, counselors, and other professionals who seek the best outcome for children of divorce.

Book excerpt: This paper proposes that attachment-based psychotherapy is a promising treatment to utilize with an adult child of divorce population during their emerging adulthood years. Researchers have long been interested in the short-term effects of parental divorce on children, however recently the literature has expanded its focus to include the long-term effects. Yet, very few studies provide therapeutic recommendations for working with adult children of divorce. Thus, this paper elucidates the developmental impact that divorce has on adult children of divorce and explores how attachment-based psychotherapeutic interventions can be utilized to address their concerns during emerging adulthood. To do so, the vast literature regarding divorce, divorce's short-term and long-term impact on children, attachment theory, emerging adulthood, adult children of divorce, and attachment-based psychotherapy will be summarized and integrated to propose an attachment-based psychotherapeutic approach to treatment specifically for emerging adult children of divorce. Finally, this psychotherapeutic approach will be outlined and supported to emphasize that the development of a new secure attachment relationship with a therapist can have a positive impact on this population in emerging adulthood and beyond.
