Agriculture and the Nitrogen Cycle provides a global assessment of the role of nitrogen fertilizer in the nitrogen cycle. The focus of the book is regional, emphasizing the need to maintain food and fiber production while minimizing environmental impacts where fertilizer is abundant, and the need to enhance fertilizer utilization in systems where nitrogen is limited. The book is derived from a workshop held by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) in Kampala, Uganda, that brought together the world's leading scientists to examine and discuss the nitrogen cycle and related problems. The research covered several key areas, including the effect of N rates on yield and nitrogen use efficiency (AE), variations in dry matter and N uptake patterns among potato varieties, the use of visible-near infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy to estimate leaf N status, and the influence of soil organic matter (SOM) on potato productivity in sandy soils. The study began with a systematic review and meta-analysis, which examined the relationship between N rates and yield, as well as N rates and agronomic N use efficiency. The analysis showed that N fertilization had a significant effect on yield, with an optimal N rate of 236 kg N ha-1. Additionally, it revealed a linear decrease in agronomic N use efficiency as N fertilization increased. Furthermore, investigating potato varieties, the research found variations in dry matter and N uptake patterns in both vines and tubers. Different potato varieties responded differently to N fertilization, affecting vine response patterns. However, variations in tuber biomass were primarily attributed to the specific potato varieties rather than N fertilizer rates. The thesis also validated the use of vis-NIR spectroscopy as a cost-effective and efficient method for monitoring leaf N status in potatoes. A model using partial least square regression (PLSR) was developed, demonstrating high predictive performance in estimating total N content in leaves. However, the accuracy of the model was decreased when total N contents exceeded 6 %. Finally, the study examined the impact of SOM levels on potato productivity in sandy soils. Soil samples from various fields were collected, and a greenhouse study was conducted. The results indicated that SOM positively influenced plant productivity, with significant effects observed in multiple productivity metrics. It was also found that N mineralization acted as a partial mediator of the SOM effect on productivity, demonstrating that SOM enhances plant productivity through mechanisms beyond simple N acquisition. In summary, the thesis provides valuable insights for potato production in the Midwestern agroecological region. The findings emphasize the importance of variety-specific responses to N fertilization, validate vis-NIR spectroscopy as a tool for monitoring leaf N status, and highlight the importance of SOM on potato productivity in sandy soils. These findings can help farmers and researchers optimize potato production, reduce N losses, promote sustainability, and maximize resource utilization in agriculture.

The impact of N rate and seed piece spacing on tuber yield and N uptake efficiency in the potato varieties Atlantic and Superior was examined in a field project conducted at the Tidewater Research Station in Plymouth, NC. A split-split field design was used with urea applied to main plots at rates of 0, 56, 112, or 168 kg N ha-1, seed piece spacing varied in the sub-plot at 23 or 30 cm, and potato variety in the sub sub-plot. In 2000 and 2001, Atlantic produced a greater total yield than Superior at the 23 and 30 cm spacing, and both varieties yielded higher at a 23 cm spacing compared to a 30-cm spacing. Total and marketable yield in plots with 56, 112, or 168 kg N ha-1 urea were not different, but the two highest N rates had significantly (P=0.05) greater yield than the 0 N treatment. Averaged across variety and spacing, total N uptake was 58 kg N ha-1 with 0 N, and increased to 100 Kg N ha-1 with 168 N ha-1. Data suggests that growers could apply N at rates of 56-112 kg N ha-1 with optimal seed piece spacing for Atlantic and Superior to produce high quality yields and reduce the potential of polluting surface and ground water reservoirs. The form and rate of nitrogen can affect the incidence and severity of many plant disease. The effects of N rate and form on hyphal growth of Rhizoctonia solani anastomosis group 3 (AG3), development of Rhizoctonia diseases, and the yield of Irish potato were determined in growth chamber, laboratory, and field studies. A significant interaction of N form and N rate on mycelial growth in-vitro was observed with R. solani grown on minimal slats culture medium with selected N sources supplying nitrate or ammonium N at rates of 0, 50, 100, and 150 ppm. Because the amount needed is so large and easily be lost from many soils, nitrogen is usually the most limiting nutrient for plant growth. Although about 79 percent of the atmosphere is nitrogen, only nitrogen-fixingplants such as legumeswith their associated bacteria are able to use this abundant source. The nonleguminous grain crops must receive supplemental nitrogen to produce satisfactory yields. Until the last few decades the supply of available nitrogen in the soil was increased primarily by legumes and manure. These sources should be used when economically feasible, but many important grain-producing areas of the world must now rely on commercial fertilizer nitrogen. For economic reasons researchers and growers have been interested for many years in improving yields from each unit of nitrogen. Recently, however, the efficient use of nitrogen has become an environmental issue as well, because high nitrate concentrations in water may be harmful to humans, especiali infants, and to livestock. If plants absorb more of the addedfertilizer nitrogen, then less is likely to leach from fields into drinking water. Improving nitrogen efficiency has also become crucial in order to conserve dwinling supplies of natural gas, which is used in large quantities to manufacture nitrogenfertilizers.
