This book was released on 2004 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music has been recognized for its psychological and physiological effects on man. Music has been thought to influence the limbic system, called the "seat of emotions", and causes emotional response and mood change. It has been conceived that musical rhythm synchronizes body rhythms, mediates within the sphere of the autonomic nervous and endocrine systems, and changes the heart and respiratory rates, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Music as an intervention ahs been used in different patient populations, in a variety of waysand in diverese settings, primarily to reduce anciety and pain and induce relaxation, thus, promoting the overall sense of well-being of the individual. This study aims to determine whether the specific musical criteria-rhythm, pitch, tone, melody, and harmony, of the pre-selected calssical music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, can induce a relaxation response on adult patients undergoing cardiac cathetherization.

The Hong Kong Hospital Authority reported nearly 7000 patients suffered from acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in year 2010 to 2011. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is a minimal access surgical treatment for coronary artery disease but studies have shown that patients experienced different levels of anxiety before and during PTCA which led negative impact to the patients. Music can be regarded as a safe, cost-effective therapy to reduce one's anxiety level. It can be carried out by nurses without any specific technique. However, there was no systemic review for using music therapy to patients undergoing PTCA. Therefore, this dissertation aims to evaluate the best available evidence on using music therapy for patients undergoing PTCA. Four electronic databases, Medline, CINAHL, Embase & PsycINFO, were searched for studies to investigate the efficacy of music therapy in patients undergoing PTCA. There were seven studies were eligible with data extracted and quality assessment performed by the critical appraisal skill programme (CASP) checklist. Four studies were graded as high quality, which consistently demonstrated a statistically significant more reduction in the anxiety level of patients who received music therapy either before and/or during PTCA than those who had no music therapy. Consequently, an evidence-based guideline of using music therapy for patients undergoing PTCA was developed according to the guideline development process of SIGN (2010). The use of music therapy is transferable and feasibly in the local setting with little manpower concern. The total cost estimated for running the innovation for a year was HKD 83,775 which was considered as cost-effective to reduce patients' anxiety level and avoid associated adverse events. A 14-months programme including communication with the stakeholders, pilot testing, staff training and clinical application of the proposed music therapy was designed. Qualitative and quantitative data on patient, healthcare provider and system outcomes would be accounted throughout the programme. The effectiveness of the guideline would be determined by the reduction of patient's anxiety level by using the Chinese version of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (Shek, 1993). Moreover, healthcare provider outcome would be evaluated by questionnaire and the expenditure of the proposed music therapy would be monitored closely. Book Music Or Nature Sound Therapy for Cardiac Catheterization Patients

Download or read book Music Or Nature Sound Therapy for Cardiac Catheterization Patients written by Arianna M. Baker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patient satisfaction has always been an important factor of hospital care. In the new healthcare landscape, hospital reimbursements are directly related to patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. Holistic, patient-centered care is a goal for many hospitals. Treating patients holistically, through mind, body and spirit, is becoming increasingly common inside hospital walls. In outpatient procedural areas, distracting noises, anxiety and difficulty resting can negatively affect patient satisfaction. Evidence supports that anxiety and lack of rest contribute to adverse effects on the healing process. These units are often open rooms with little, but a curtain, to separate patients from each other and ambient noises. Standard therapies alone like education, medications and noise intervening may be ineffective in reducing all of these stimuli. Anxiolytic therapy or sedatives are often contraindicated. Research evidence indicates the use of music therapy helps overcome these distractions. This research proposal addresses music and nature sound therapy, supporting theory and its benefits to the cardiac catheterization patient population. It includes the problem of anxiety and noise in an outpatient area, the use of music therapy as a solution and the process of implementing such project into practice. This report cites the ease of use and cost effectiveness of music or nature sound therapy as a viable intervention.

This book was released on 2019-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a major increase in research into the effects of the arts on health and well-being, alongside developments in practice and policy activities in different countries across the WHO European Region and further afield. This report synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, with a specific focus on the WHO European Region. Results from over 3000 studies identified a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

Book Handbook of Psychiatry in Palliative Medicine

Download or read book Handbook of Psychiatry in Palliative Medicine written by Harvey Max Chochinov and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychiatric, or psychosocial, palliative care has transformed palliative medicine. Palliation that neglects psychosocial dimensions of patient and family experience fails to meet contemporary standards of comprehensive palliative care. While a focus on somatic issues has sometimes overshadowed attention to psychological, existential, and spiritual end-of-life challenges, the past decade has seen an all encompassing, multi-disciplinary approach to care for the dying take hold. Written by internationally known psychiatry and palliative care experts, the Handbook of Psychiatry in Palliative Medicine is an essential reference for all providers of palliative care, including psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health counselors, oncologists, hospice workers, and social workers.
