Download or read book Effects of Microstructure Composition and Strength on the Nil Ductility Transition NDT Temperature of HY 80 Steel written by Marcel L. Salive and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel from 22 heats of low-carbon Ni-Cr-Mo steel, HY-80 (ASTM a543-65, and MIL-S-16216G (Ships)) was heat treated to study the effects on the drop weight nil ductility transition (NDT) temperature of (1) commercial variation in composition and inclusion content, (2) variation in microstructure such as prior austenitic grain size and the relative amount of isothermally produced ferrite or bainite in a tempered martensitic matrix, and (3) the observed variation in strength obtained after a one-hour 1150 deg F temper followed by water quench to prevent embrittlement while cooling from the tempering temperature.

Book Effects of Microstructure Composition and Strength on the Strength Differential Phenomenon Observed in HY 80 Steel

Download or read book Effects of Microstructure Composition and Strength on the Strength Differential Phenomenon Observed in HY 80 Steel written by Marcel L. Salive and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel from 22 heats of low-carbon Ni-Cr-Mo steel (MIL-S-16216G and ASTM A543-65) were heat treated to study the effects on the strength-differential effect and the difference between tensile and compressive yield strength of (1) commercial variation in composition and inclusion content, (2) variation in microstructure such as prior austenitic grain size and the relative amount of isothermally produced ferrite or bainite in a tempered martensitic matrix, and (3) the observed variation in strength obtained after a 1-hour 1150 F temper followed by a water quench to prevent embrittlement while cooling from the temperating temperature. The difference between the tensile and compressive yield strength, sometimes called the strength differential (S-D) effect, was observed in this study to be at least 5 percent of the tensile yield strength. Data are cited to show that in the low-carbon Ni-Cr-Mo steels studied here, the S-D effect observed was a relatively constant percent of the tensile yield strength, and was markedly structure-sensitive to prior austenitic grain size, microstructural constituents, tempering temperature, type and distribution of carbides formed during tempering, and tempering slightly above the lower critical temperature. Book THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERED NONMARTENSITIC PRODUCTS ON THE NOTCH TOUGHNESS AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF AN HY 80 STEEL

Download or read book THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERED NONMARTENSITIC PRODUCTS ON THE NOTCH TOUGHNESS AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF AN HY 80 STEEL written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the effects of nonmartensitic products and mechanical properties on the nil-ductilitytransition (NDT) temperature and transverse Charpy V-notch absorption level, for a selected HY-80 steel. Proeutectoid ferrite was found to have the most detrimental effect on the transverse Charpy maximum energy level. Large prior austenitic grain size, irrespective of microstructure, increases the NDT temperature by approximately 100 F. It is recommended that the present HY-80 specification be amended to require two chemistry ranges, one for thin and one for thick plates.

Book Effects of Tempering Above the Lower Critical Temperature a Sub C1 on the Properties of an Hy 80 Steel

Download or read book Effects of Tempering Above the Lower Critical Temperature a Sub C1 on the Properties of an Hy 80 Steel written by Abner R. Willner and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of tempering above the critical transformation temperature on the microstructure, notch-toughness and mechanical properties of HY-80 steel was investigated. The formation of alpha ferrite and prime martensite after tempering above the lower critical temperature and quenching will result in mechanical properties that fall below the requirements of the HY- 80 specification. Retempering to achieve minimum yield strengths may result in nonuniform yield strength distribution. The possibility of underbead cracking due to alloy segregation is also discussed.

Book The Effects of Austenitizing and Tempering on the Mechanical Properties of Fully Quenched Hy 80 Steels

Download or read book The Effects of Austenitizing and Tempering on the Mechanical Properties of Fully Quenched Hy 80 Steels written by A. R. WILLNER and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of austenitizing, tempering temperatures times on fully quenched low- and high-chemistry HY-80 steels were investigated. Correlation procedures were established for relating notch-brittleness properties to tensile strength for a given Charpy V-notch fibrous fracture appearance. The results indicate that Charpy V-notch transition temperatures increase with increasing austenitizing and decreasing tempering temperatures. For fully quenched HY-80 steels, the optimum Charpy V-notch impact fibrous transition temperatures are attained for the 100,000psi-yield-strength level.

Book Microstructure and Texture in Steels

Download or read book Microstructure and Texture in Steels written by Arunansu Haldar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructure and Texture in Steels and Other Materials comprises a collection of articles pertaining to experimental and theoretical aspects of the evolution of crystallographic texture and microstructure during processing of steels and some other materials. Among the topics covered is the processing-microstructure-texture-property relationship in various kinds of steels, including the latest grade. Special emphasis has been given to introduce recent advances in the characterization of texture and microstructure, as well as modeling. The papers included are written by well-known experts from academia and industrial R and D, which will provide the reader with state-of-the-art, in-depth knowledge of the subject. With these attributes, Microstructure and Texture in Steels and Other Materials is expected to serve the cause of creating awareness of current developments in microstructural science and materials engineering among academic and R and D personnel working in the field.
