Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the differential impact of migration on labor supply of the left-behind household members in Nepal, where international migration for employment, predominantly a male phenomenon, increased substantially between 2001 and 2011. Using the Nepal Living Standard Survey data, the paper extends the analysis by incorporating the impacts on the extensive and intensive margins. The study also answer the question: if they are not wage-employed, in what activities are the remaining household members engaging instead? The paper finds that, in response to out-migration of some family members, women realign their priorities and reallocate their time from market employment to self-employment and home production, possibly filling in the roles vacated by the migrants. In contrast, the income effect dominates the impact of migration on the left-behind men; that is, men value their leisure more because of the remittances from abroad and decrease their overall supply of labor. Additionally, the research finds significant heterogeneity in the supply of labor by age, skill, and household head status among the left-behind women, pointing toward intrahousehold bargaining.

Book excerpt: As measured by its per-capita income, Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, with large parts of its population trapped in poverty within a stunning, but difficult to control natural environment. Under these conditions, since the wake of the 21st century, international labour migration and the associated remittances of large amounts of foreign exchange have rapidly gained influence on the country’s economic and social development, triggered by internal disturbances, in particular economic downturn and political upheavals, as well as external dynamics which boosted an uprising international demand for unskilled labour. While there is hardly any basic dissent about the short- to mid-term Positive growth effect for Nepal’s economy, surprisingly little is known about the consequences of this form of livelihood security at the individual household level, apart from some anecdotal evidence, although neither policy makers nor NGOs may effectively craft their strategies without considering this phenomenon. This book was developed from an Alumni Workshop held in Kathmandu in 2015, where, focusing on this knowledge gap, wide-ranging original research about the consequences of family members’ absence and the receipt of remittances was presented. Moving on from this starting point the authors further elaborated their work to make it accessible to a broader public, and exploitable as a resource for policy making and follow-up research. In addition, this volume includes detailed facts and figures about outmigration from and inflow of remittances to Nepal. With a view to long-term development implications of international migration it also considers the gain of knowledge and access to international academic networks brought into the country by returned scholars. The editor of the volume, Béatrice Knerr, is a professor of development economics, affiliated to the University of Kassel, Germany, where, until 2015, she was heading the Department of Development Economics, Migration and Agricultural Policy (DEMAP). Afterwards she has served as guest professor at the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan (UADY) in Merida, Mexico, and at the College of Economics of Hue University, Vietnam. Presently she is on contract with the Brawijaya University of Malang, Indonesia, where she is joining research projects on rural development and teaching various modules in the Economics Faculty. As an expert in the implications of labour migration on the development of low- to middle-income countries she has published and edited around 30 books and 100 journal articles and book chapters.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to understand the relationship between husband's migration and the mental health of their wives who stay behind. It identifies, describes, and analyzes different pathways of this relationship, with a focus on labor migration, transnational families, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and South Asia, particularly Nepal. It further discusses the pattern of this association and how factors like household members and children moderates it. The findings in these papers are based on 1) qualitative data derived from a series of interviews and ethnographic observations, and 2) quantitative panel data on individual's migration and mental health history, as well as individual and household level demographic details collected rigorously over 21 years. Chapter II identifies and describes five pathways of interaction between husband's migration and their wives' mental health: communication, children as coping and stress-inducing agents, family support and difficulties, migration history in the family, and migration as a social process. It concludes that these mechanisms interact in a complex web within the individual and social domain of the migrant's wives that determines how they experience mental well-being and mental health problems. Chapter III is focused on understanding the pattern of association between husbands' time away and the onset of MDD in their wives. It concludes that the stress that comes immediately after the husband's departure significantly influences the onset of MDD among their wives. Chapter IV utilizes the theoretical framework of social ties, social support, and mental health in understanding how household members and children of wives of labor migrants can protect or increase their risk of MDD. It concludes that household members act differently in the context of migration and can reduce the risk of MDD. Overall, this dissertation contributes to the theoretical understanding of the association between migration and mental health. This knowledge can be used to guide public health policies and programs to address the mental health consequences of husband's migration on their families who stay behind.

Book excerpt: This paper assesses the impact of work-related migration by males on the labor market behavior of females in Nepal. Using data from the 2004 Nepal household survey, the authors apply the Instrumental Variable Full Information Maximum Likelihood method to account for unobserved factors that could simultaneously affect males' decision to migrate and females' decision to participate in the labor market. The results indicate that male migration for work has a negative impact on the level of market work participation by the women left behind. The authors find evidence of substantial heterogeneity (based both on observable and unobservable characteristics) in the impact of male migration. The findings highlight the important gender dimension of the impact of predominantly male worker migration on the wellbeing of sending households. The authors argue that strategies for economic development in Nepal should take into account such gender aspects of the migration dynamics.
