Book Water Pollution and Fish Physiology

Download or read book Water Pollution and Fish Physiology written by Alan G. Heath and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise synthesis of how toxic chemical pollutants affect physiological processes in teleost fish. This Second Edition of the well-received Water Pollution and Fish Physiology has been completely updated, and chapters have been added on immunology and acid toxicity. The emphasis, as in the first edition, is on understanding mechanisms of sublethal effects on fish and their responses to these environmental stressors. The first chapter covers the basic principles involved in understanding how fish respond, in general, to environmental alterations. Each subsequent chapter is devoted to a particular organ system or physiological function and begins with a short overview of normal physiology of that system/function. This is followed by a review of how various toxic chemicals may alter normal conditions in fish. Chapters covering environmental hypoxia, behavior, cellular enzymes, and acid toxicity are also included. The book closes with a discussion on the practical application of physiological and biochemical measurements of fish in water pollution control in research and regulatory settings.

Book Environmental Physiology of Fishes

Download or read book Environmental Physiology of Fishes written by M.A. Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very good piece of work, I assure you, and a merry. -Now, good Peter Quince, call forth your actors by the scroll. -Masters, spread yourselves. A Midsummer Night's Dream. Act 1, Sc. 2 This volume is the outcome of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in August 1979 at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada. About 130 participants from all the countries of the aJiiance as well as India and Japan attended this event which lasted two weeks. Seventeen of these participants had been invited to present reviews of chosen topics, usually in their specialty. This book is constituted mainly of these presentations, which were prepared as chapters. In addition, six of the participants, whose seminars were found to complement the main chapters, were coopted by the invited lectures/authors to provide additional chapters. Although a lecture was given on electric fields, a chapter on this matter is unfortunately absent due to the lack of preparation time. One may say that Environmental Physiology of Fishes as a discipline originated in Canada. Having been involved as a teacher and worker in this field since 19 54, it was but natural that I was tempted to organise an ASI and get a volume out on the matter. I was encouraged by discussions with colleagues and the acceptance on the part of a large number of eminent colleagues to attend the ASI, deliver lectures and write chapters.

Book Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution and Environmental Management

Download or read book Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution and Environmental Management written by J.M. Hellawell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preface of a book often provides a convenient place in which the author can tender his apologies for any inadequacies and affords him the facility to excuse himself by reminding the reader that his art is long but life, or at least the portion of it in which he has the opportunity for writing books, is short. I, too, am deeply conscious that I have undertaken a task which I could not hope to complete to my own satisfaction but I offer, in self defence, the observation that, inadequate though it is, there is no other book extant, so far as I am aware, which provides the information contained herein within the covers of a single volume. Often during the last decade, in discharging my responsibilities for the environmental aspects of the water authority's operations and works, I should have been deeply grateful to have had access to a compendium such as this. The lack of a convenient source of data made me aware of the need which I have attempted to fill and in doing so I have drawn on my experiences of the kinds of problem which are presented to biologists in the water industry. The maxim 'half a loaf is better than none' seems particularly apt in this context.

Book Fish Physiology The Physiology of Tropical Fishes

Download or read book Fish Physiology The Physiology of Tropical Fishes written by Adalberto Luis Val and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Tropical Fishes is the 21st volume of the well-known Fish Physiology series and consists of 12 chapters. The purpose of the book is to consolidate and integrate what is known about tropical fishes (marine and freshwater species). The twelve chapters focus on the physiological adaptations acquired during the evolutionary process to cope with warm and shallow hypoxic waters from tropical and neotropical hydrographic basins as well as with the intertidal and coral reef habitats which occur in abundance in tropical seas. The special characteristics of tropical fish fauna will be issued in order to explain the tropical fish radiation, which gave rise to such extreme fish diversity. This present volume, is a voyage through the tropical region reviewing the fish diversity of the main tropical freshwater sheds, including the major tropical rivers and lakes, the major dams, and marine environments. - State-of-the-art information on tropical fish physiology - Written by specialists working in the Tropics - Offers a diverse depiction of the various tropical fishes and the environment where they inhabit - 12 innovative chapters covering a concise view of growth rate, biological rhythms, feeding plasticity, cardio-respiratory design and function, diversity of structure, and much more

Book Water Quality Criteria for Freshwater Fish

Download or read book Water Quality Criteria for Freshwater Fish written by J S Alabaster and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Quality Criteria for Freshwater Fish, Second Edition, is a collection of 12 technical papers on water quality criteria for European freshwater fish, together with a report on fish toxicity testing procedures that have been produced for the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC)—an intergovernmental organization with a current membership of 24 countries. Each chapter reviews a particular water quality characteristic for European inland fisheries, although the effects of mixtures with other harmful substances have been described for some of them. These characteristics include water quality criteria for finely suspended solids and pH values; water temperature; the effect of ammonia; phenolic wastes; dissolved oxygen; chemistry and toxicology of chlorine; and toxicity of zinc, copper, and cadmium. The reports in this volume will be useful not only to the member countries of the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission, but also to those concerned with the management of inland waters and their fishery resources in other continents.

Book Histochemical and Cytophotometric Assay of Acid Stress in Freshwater Fish

Download or read book Histochemical and Cytophotometric Assay of Acid Stress in Freshwater Fish written by Adam Anthony and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of using histochemical and histopathological changes in brook trout, longnose dace and fathead minnows as bioindicators of acid pollution was investigated. Laboratory studies entailed using a gravity flow diluter system. Field studies involved using net traps in polluted streams. Exposure durations were 4-5 days and 28-30 days. Histochemical and cytophotometric analyses were made of gills, Stannius corpuscle, blood, spleen, kidney and liver. The primary mode of acid toxicant action is gill damage which results in impaired respiratory, excretory and liver functions. Short term indices of acid stress include: colloidal iron and aminosalicylic acids (PAS) staining of gills and renal Stannius corpuscles. A useful bioindicator of prolonged acid exposure is decreased azure B-RNA staining of liver cells; this assesses the extent of liver impairment and reflects a reduced tolerance of fish to other toxicants.
