Book excerpt: Feelings of apprehension and fear brought on by mathematical performance can affect correct mathematical application and can influence the achievement and future paths of individuals affected by it. In recent years, mathematics anxiety has become a subject of increasing interest both in educational and clinical settings. This ground-breaking collection presents theoretical, educational and psychophysiological perspectives on the widespread phenomenon of mathematics anxiety. Featuring contributions from leading international researchers, Mathematics Anxiety challenges preconceptions and clarifies several crucial areas of research, such as the distinction between mathematics anxiety from other forms of anxiety (i.e., general or test anxiety); the ways in which mathematics anxiety has been assessed (e.g. throughout self-report questionnaires or psychophysiological measures); the need to clarify the direction of the relationship between math anxiety and mathematics achievement (which causes which). Offering a revaluation of the negative connotations usually associated with mathematics anxiety and prompting avenues for future research, this book will be invaluable to academics and students in the field psychological and educational sciences, as well as teachers working with students who are struggling with mathematics anxiety

Book The Impact of Mathematics Anxiety Gender and Mathematics Achievement on Ontogenetic Indicators for Hispanic Latino Students in Higher Education Mathematics Classes

Download or read book The Impact of Mathematics Anxiety Gender and Mathematics Achievement on Ontogenetic Indicators for Hispanic Latino Students in Higher Education Mathematics Classes written by Armando Isaac Peréz and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A convenience sample of 123 Hispanic/Latino students from a predominantly Hispanic/Latino South Texas community college was used to determine if gender and/or journal-writing had any effects on mathematics anxiety or achievement. Eight sections of college-algebra courses were administered the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) to determine levels of mathematics anxiety and the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) to determine levels of mathematical achievement. Results of the study suggest that journal-writing decreases levels of mathematics anxiety among students. In addition, the study suggests that males and females do not differ in terms of mathematical achievement. These finding are consistent with previous studies. However, the study also suggested that males and females report the same levels of mathematics anxiety and that journal-writing does not increase mathematical achievement. This is in contrast to previous published studies.

Book The effect of expressive writing on the math anxiety scores of Middle School students enrolled in a public school in east Texas

Download or read book The effect of expressive writing on the math anxiety scores of Middle School students enrolled in a public school in east Texas written by Angela D. Ruark and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Math anxiety is a serious concern for educators and students. Students who may otherwise be successful can find themselves incapacitated to think and perform to their abilities due to this issue. Math anxiety negatively affects academic performance and deters students from pursuing math-based careers. This is particularly true for female students. Effective interventions are needed to address these issues. Expressive writing is one such intervention that has shown promise in reducing math anxiety with older students. This study investigated the impact of expressive writing on the math anxiety levels of middle school students according to group and gender. An experimental, pretest-posttest, control group design with random assignment was used for a sample of 40 students from a public middle school in East Texas. The Modified Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale was administered as a pretest and posttest. Students were randomly placed into either the control or treatment group. Both groups completed journal entries each day. The treatment group also responded to a daily expressive writing prompt. The study was conducted over a two-week period. One-way ANCOVAs for data analysis found no significant differences according to group or gender. Results and their implications are discussed, and future research recommendations provided.

Book Measuring the Effect of Anxiety Reduction Techniques on Math Anxiety Levels in Students Enrolled in an HBCU College

Download or read book Measuring the Effect of Anxiety Reduction Techniques on Math Anxiety Levels in Students Enrolled in an HBCU College written by Marie Mikael Husni and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine whether the use of anxiety reduction and mathematics study skills techniques incorporated in a Basic Math course would lower students' math anxiety and increase achievement in African American students enrolled in a Historically Black College. This study was limited to only African American students enrolled in two sections of Basic Math at Rust College, in Holly Springs, Mississippi: one control class (33 students) and one treatment class (33 students). One professor, the researcher, taught the same lectures and used traditional methods of teaching in both classes. In the treatment class the teacher used anxiety reduction and math study skills techniques such as collaborative learning, journal writing, learning activities, relaxation instructions, and test taking skills over an eight week period. Identical math content was covered in both sections. Achievement was measured by the Rust College Placement Exam and mathematics anxiety was measured by administering the Math Anxiety Rating Scale after each class test. The obtained results indicated a significant reduction in anxiety (p = .000) and a significant increase in achievement (p = .000) for the treatment group. Additionally, a significant difference in gender was indicated for anxiety (p = .019), but not for achievement (p = .779) for the treatment group.
