Book Effects of Irradiation on Ceramics for Fusion reactor Applications

Download or read book Effects of Irradiation on Ceramics for Fusion reactor Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study, coordinated with efforts of LANL and Grumman Aircraft, was to lay some basic groundwork to study the irradiation effects on the engineering properties of some useful classes of ceramic materials; ANL's efforts were pointed towards multiphase materials (glass ceramics and partially-stabilized zirconias). The materials were irradiated at 400 and 550°C to fast (E> 0.1 MeV) neutron fluences of approx. 2 x 1022n/cm2. Fluorophlogapite mica based glass ceramics (Macor, etc.) were found susceptible to weakening due to void formtion between mica plates. Composition variations within this class of glass ceramics seemed to cause sharp variations in the magnitude of the effect. Lithium silicate glass ceramic (ReX) showed sharp contrasts between the effects of ionization irradiation and displacement damage, neutron irradiation having little effect on the ReX structure while electron irradiation creating lithium silicate vitrification and rapid structural annealing.

Book Effect of Irradiation induced Defects on Fusion Reactor Ceramics

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation induced Defects on Fusion Reactor Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural, thermal, and electrical properties critical to performance of ceramics in a fusion environment can be profoundly altered by irradiation effects. Neutron damage may cause swelling, reduction of thermal conductivity, increase in dielectric loss, and either reduction or enhancement of strength depending on the crystal structure and defect content of the material. Absorption of ionizing energy inevitably leads to degradation of insulating properties, but these changes can be reduced by alterations in structural or compositional makeup. Assessment of the irradiation response of candidate ceramics Al2O3, MgAl2O4, SiC and Si3N4 shows that each may find use in advanced fusion devices. The present understanding of irradiation-induced defects in ceramics, while far from complete, nevertheless points the way to methods for developing improved materials for fusion applications.

Book Neutron irradiation Effects on SiO2 and SiO2 based Glass Ceramics

Download or read book Neutron irradiation Effects on SiO2 and SiO2 based Glass Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary data base to assess the radiation-damage resistance of some glass ceramic materials has been gathered. These are rather complex materials, both in structure and composition, but possess many of those properties required for structural, insulator applications in fusion-reactor design. Property measurements were made after fast (E> 0.1 MeV) neutron irradiations of approx. 2.4 x 1022 n/cm2 at 400°C and 550°C. The results have shown general resistance to changes in thermal expansion and most did not eperience severe loss of mechanical integrity. The maximum volume expansion occurred in several of the fluorophlogapite-based glass ceramics (approx. 3.0%). Several observations demonstrated differences between the effects of neutron and electron irradiation; irradiation conditions proptotypic of projected reactor uses need be considered for optimum materials selection.

Book Overview of Irradiation Effects Research on Insulating Ceramics

Download or read book Overview of Irradiation Effects Research on Insulating Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insulating ceramics have many uses in fusion reactors. Although various environmental conditions can degrade these materials, the most severe problems lie in the area of irradiation damage. Such damage can be detrimental to dimensional stability, strength, thermal conductivity, and various electrical properties; failure of an insulator can result from deleterious changes in any of these areas. Degradation of electrical properties falls into two categories: permanent effects, and transient effects that occur only when irradiation fluxes are actually impinging on the material. Consequences of irradiation damage can be severe not only for power reactors but for nearer-term machines such as ITER. Fusion reactors will require electrical ceramics to serve as insulators in rf heating systems and neutral beam injectors, diagnostic components, lightly-shielded magnetic coils, and current breaks between metallic structural elements. When these insulators are subjected to radiation fields (neutron, gamma, or ion bombardment) various physical properties can be degraded; these are discussed.

Book Ceramics for Fusion Devices

Download or read book Ceramics for Fusion Devices written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramics are required for a number of applications in fusion devices, among the most critical of which are magnetic coil insulators, windows for RF heating systems, and structural uses. Radiation effects dominate consideration of candidate materials, although good pre-irradiation properties are a requisite. Materials and components can be optimized by careful control of chemical and microstructural content, and application of brittle material design and testing techniques. Future directions for research and development should include further extension of the data base in the areas of electrical, structural, and thermal properties; establishment of a fission neutron/fusion neutron correlation including transmutation gas effects; and development of new materials tailored to meet the specific needs of fusion reactors.

Book Proceedings of the Office of Fusion Energy

Download or read book Proceedings of the Office of Fusion Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A workshop to assess the potential application of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for structural applications in fusion reactors was held on May 21--22, 1990, at University of California, Santa Barbara. Participants included individuals familiar with materials and design requirements in fusion reactors, ceramic composite processing and properties and radiation effects. The primary focus was to list the feasibility issues that might limit the application of these materials in fusion reactors. Clear advantages for the use of CMCs are high-temperature operation, which would allow a high-efficiency Rankine cycle, and low activation. Limitations to their use are material costs, fabrication complexity and costs, lack of familiarity with these materials in design, and the lack of data on radiation stability at relevant temperatures and fluences. Fusion-relevant feasibility issues identified at this workshop include: hermetic and vacuum properties related to effects of matrix porosity and matrix microcracking; chemical compatibility with coolant, tritium, and breeder and multiplier materials, radiation effects on compatibility; radiation stability and integrity; and ability to join CMCs in the shop and at the reactor site, radiation stability and integrity of joints. A summary of ongoing CMC radiation programs is also given. It was suggested that a true feasibility assessment of CMCs for fusion structural applications could not be completed without evaluation of a material tailored'' to fusion conditions or at least to radiation stability. It was suggested that a follow-up workshop be held to design a tailored composite after the results of CMC radiation studies are available and the critical feasibility issues are addressed.
