Book Effects of Irradiation in Austenitic Steels and Other High Temperature Alloys

Download or read book Effects of Irradiation in Austenitic Steels and Other High Temperature Alloys written by D. R. Harries and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron irradiation has an adverse effect on the tensile ductility of austenitic steels and a nickel-base alloy at test temperatures above about 600 C. n contrast to the fast-neutron-induced, low-temperature irradiation hardening and embrittlement of materials, the loss in ductility at elevated temperatures is a function of the thermal neutron dose, and the effects cannot be recovered by post-irradiation annealing at temperatures up to about 1200 C.

Book Effect of Irradiation on the Mechanical Properties of 19 9DL Alloy

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on the Mechanical Properties of 19 9DL Alloy written by CJ. Baroch and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austenitic stainless steels, which are used extensively in water cooled nuclear reactors, are presently being considered for use in fast reactors; however, these steels are susceptible to irradiation embrittlement and irradiation induced swelling. The modified austenitic stainless steel 19-9DL alloy, on the other hand, exhibits good creep strength at high temperatures. Babcock & Wilcox conducted an exploratory program to determine the effects of irradiation on 19-9DL alloy at temperatures of 55 C (130 F), 343 C (650 F), and 413 C (775 F). The maximum fluence in this program (9.2x1020 n/cm2, E>1 MeV) was too low to prove the suitability of the alloy's potential for fast reactor applications but did show that additional evaluation of the alloy for fast reactors was warranted. The results indicate that the alloy is suitable for use in thermal reactors, since the ductility at 413 C was greater than 10 percent at a fluence approaching 1x1021 n/cm2, E>1 MeV.

Book The Influence of Pre irradiation Heat Treatments on Thermal Non equilibrium and Radiation induced Segregation Behavior in Model Austenitic Stainless Steel Alloys

Download or read book The Influence of Pre irradiation Heat Treatments on Thermal Non equilibrium and Radiation induced Segregation Behavior in Model Austenitic Stainless Steel Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of pre-irradiation heat treatments on thermal non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation (TNES) and subsequent radiation-induced grain boundary segregation (RIS) is studied in a series of model austenitic stainless steels. The alloys used for this study are based on AISI 316 stainless steel and have the following nominal compositions: Fe-16Cr-13Ni-1.25Mn (base 316), Fe-16Cr-13Ni-1.25Mn-2.0Mo (316 + Mo) and Fe-16Cr-13Ni-1.25Mn-2.0Mo-0.07P (316 + Mo + P). Samples were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 1100 to 1300 C and cooled at 4 different rates (salt brine quench, water quench, air cool and furnace cool) to evaluate the effect of annealing temperature and quench rate on TNES. The alloys were than processed with the treatment (temperature and cooling rate) that resulted in the maximum Cr enrichment. Alloys with and without the heat treatment to enrich the grain boundaries with Cr were characterized following irradiation to 1 dpa at 400 C with high-energy protons in order to understand the influence of alloying additions and pre-irradiation grain boundary chemistry on irradiation-induced elemental enrichment and depletion profiles. Various mechanistic models will be examined to explain the observed behavior.

Book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals

Download or read book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals written by Frederic R. Shober and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. Book Nature of Radiation Damage to Engineering Properties of Various Stainless Steel Alloys

Download or read book Nature of Radiation Damage to Engineering Properties of Various Stainless Steel Alloys written by A. L. Bernent and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Austenitic (AISI Types 304, 348, AM-350), ferritic (AISI Type 406), and martensitic (AISI Type 410) stainless steels have been irradiated in aqueous and gaseous environments at several irradiation temperatures to 750 C. Tensile tests were performed at several test temperatures between 20 and 750 C on specimens with integrated neutron exposures to 6.0 x 1021 nvt (>1 Mev). The combined effects of irradiation and test temperature produce minimum ductility at intermediate temperatures between 200 and 400 C and at higher temperatures between 600 and 800 C. The significance of these minima with respect to the preirradiation thermal/mechanical treatment, irradiation temperature, neutron fluence, and deformation temperature are discussed. The effects of aging, annealing, recovery, and grain growth are examined. Control tests were performed to determine the effects due to environment alone. Selected parameters such as heat-treatment, cold work, composition, and orientation are considered. Postirradiation annealing studies were performed to determine what portion of the tensile ductility was recoverable after irradiation in significantly different spectra.
