It is estimated that valley grasslands contain between 90 to 99% cover of non-native plants. The most recent wave of invasive plants has included medusahead (Elymus caput-medusae L.). Medusahead is an annual grass that matures two to four weeks later than most other grasses. Management of medusahead includes the use of herbicides, targeted grazing, prescribed burns, and mechanical control. The primary focus of most studies on the use of these management methods is on the control of medusahead rather than the impacts on non-target plants. This study examines published research to determine what impact medusahead management has on the composition of plant communities within valley grasslands. Herbicides have mixed impacts on the percent cover of grasses and forbs. Targeted grazing resulted in decreased percent cover of non-native grasses and increased forb cover. Grazing results in neutral to increased percent cover of native plants. Prescribed burns decreased the percent cover of non-native grasses, increased forb cover, and had mixed impacts on native plant cover. Mechanical control shifted vegetative states towards forb or filaree (Erodium spp.) dominated communities. The non-target impacts of medusahead control were generally short-lived with differences in percent cover returning to baseline conditions within one to three years. To mitigate the non-target impacts of medusahead, revegetation efforts should be prioritized in sites with higher abundances of native plant species. The future success of controlling medusahead is dependent upon grassland restoration research, consistent funding for weed management areas to aid in managing invasive plants, and the implementation of monitoring after medusahead control treatments.

Melderis) is a Eurasian annual grass that infests large areas of U.S. rangelands, dominating former bunchgrass/shrub sites. Squirreltail (Elymus elymoides (Raf.) Swezey) is a native perennial grass that has demonstrated the ability to establish in stands of medusahead. A study conducted on two sites near Burns, OR had the objectives of quantifying competition between medusahead and squirreltail, and determining the effect of moisture availability on competition. Two hundred plots were arranged in a factorial design. Measurements were taken of plant growth, seed production, soil moisture, and climate. Results for the two years are contrasting. The first year was very dry. Medusahead grew and reproduced well, producing a seed crop up to 10 times the amount planted; squirreltail grew poorly and did not reproduce. Samples of squirreltail seed retrieved from the plots in late summer were found to have remained dormant since seeding. The second year had above-average precipitation. Medusahead grew and reproduced well again. Squirreltail grew and reproduced abundantly on one of the sites, both on freshly-seeded plots and on plots containing dormant seeds and surviving plants from the previous year. In all cases, medusahead exhibited stronger interspecific and intraspecific competitive effects than did squirreltail seedlings. With adequate soil moisture, squirreltail reduced average weight and median seed production of individual medusahead plants, but did not reduce medusahead seed production per square meter. Medusahead succeeded in a drought year by utilizing deep soil moisture, and utilized shallower moisture in a wet year. During a wet year in plots containing mature squirreltail, medusahead utilized shallower moisture, while squirreltail strongly utilized much deeper moisture. Interspecific competitive interference by medusahead on squirreltail seedlings suggests the potential benefits of suppressing medusahead during the seeding year for squirreltail in a rehabilitation effort, especially if climatic conditions are conducive to squirreltail germination and establishment.

Book excerpt: One weed that is of concern in Missouri pastures that can be detrimental is Northern dewberry (Rubus flagellaris Willd.). This weed can be detrimental due its production of spines which can injure grazing animals and also humans. Results from our study show that herbicide applications made in the fall that contain metsulfuron will provide approximately 50% control of this weed, but where severe infestations exist a follow-up application will be required. Tall fescue can also be detrimental to the health of grazing animals. It can contain a fungus known as ergovaline which is in its highest concentration in tall fescue seedheads. Applying herbicides at certain growth stages can reduce tall fescue seedhead density. Applications of metsulfuron-containing herbicides at the boot stage of growth reduced tall fescue seedhead density the most compared to vegetative stage applications of these same herbicides. The distribution of cattle grazing in mixed tall fescue and legume pastures is also an important aspect of pasture management. Overgrazing of certain areas in pastures can cause an increase in weed growth and also reduce the growth of desirable forage. However, many producers are skeptical of treating pastures with broadcast herbicide applications as almost all herbicides available for broadleaf weed control in a pasture setting will eliminate other desirable forage species such as clover. Through this research, it was determined that even with the elimination of legumes, cattle grazing distribution can be increased in herbicide-treated pastures compared to non-treated areas within the same pasture.

Book excerpt: Invasions by exotic grasses, particularly annuals, rank among the most extensive and intensive ways that humans are contributing to the transformation of the earth’s surface. The problem is particularly notable with a suite of exotic grasses in the Bromus genus in the arid and semiarid regions that dominate the western United States, which extend from the dry basins near the Sierra and Cascade Ranges across the Intermountain Region and Rockies to about 105° longitude. This genus includes approximately 150 species that have a wide range of invasive and non-invasive tendencies in their home ranges and in North America. Bromus species that became invasive upon introduction to North America in the late 1800’s, such as Bromus tectorum and B. rubens, have since became the dominant cover on millions of hectares. Here, millenia of ecosystem development led to landscapes that would otherwise be dominated by perennial shrubs, herbs, and biotic soil crusts that were able to persist in spite of variable and scarce precipitation. This native ecosystem resilience is increasingly coveted by land owners and managers as more hectares lose their resistance to Bromus grasses and similar exotics and as climate, land use, and disturbance-regime changes are also superimposed. Managers are increasingly challenged to glean basic services from these ecosystems as they become invaded. Exotic annual grasses reduce wildlife and livestock carrying capacity and increase the frequency and extent of wildfi res and associated soil erosion. This book uses a unique ecoregional and multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the invasiveness, impacts, and management of the large Bromus genus.
