A particular effort was made to recognize the dominant roles that social insects (e.g., termites, ants and passalid beetles) play in saproxylic assemblages in many parts of the world without overlooking the non-social members of these communities. The book is divided into four parts: · Part I “Diversity” includes chapters addressing the major orders of saproxylic insects (Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera and Blattodea), broadly organized in decreasing order of estimated global saproxylic diversity. In addition to order-level treatments, some chapters in this part discuss groups of particular interest, including pollinators, hymenopteran parasitoids, ants, stag and passalid beetles, and wood-feeding termites. · Part II “Ecology” discusses insect-fungal and insect-insect interactions, nutritional ecology, dispersal, seasonality, and vertical stratification. · Part III “Conservation” focuses on the importance of primary forests for saproxylic insects, offers recommendations for conserving these organisms in managed forests, discusses the relationships between saproxylic insects and fire, and addresses the value of tree hollows and highly-decomposed wood for saproxylic insects. Utilization of non-native wood by saproxylic insects and the suitability of urban environments for these organisms are also covered. · Lastly, Part IV “Methodological Advancements” highlights molecular tools for assessing saproxylic diversity. The book offers an accessible and insightful resource for natural historians of all kinds and will especially appeal to entomologists, ecologists, conservationists and foresters.

Book excerpt: The effects of coniferous afforestation on rove beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) was investigated in Kielder Forest in 1988 by pitfall and turf sampling in plantations of various age and in unplanted sites. Tree planting decreased habitat availability for most beetles, but provided new habitat for forest species. The greatest abundance, species richness and diversity occurred in non-afforested sites. Site ordination demonstrated an upland group on acid soils and a lowland group on mineral soils, with wet and dry components; species ordination was similar. A central forest group was due to both forest species and original species being maintained. Similarly, classification separated closed-canopy forest sites with little ground vegetation from the remainder. Afforestation had increased habitat diversity by adding trees, rides and roads to the original habitats, but diversity per unit area had decreased Forest managers should aim to increase staphylinid diversity 'by design', particularly by varying tree species and age class so as to develop greater biological and structural diversity. Habitat diversity could further be enhanced by conserving representative areas of former land use, such as farm fields, river banks and open moorland; active management might be necessary to sustain these. Staphylinid species are favoured by forest edge habitats, so would gain from the integration of small habitat units within plantations, resulting in a beneficial 'knock-on' effect by being food for birds and small mammals.

Book excerpt: "Forest canopies may harbour up to 50% of the world's diversity and since the canopy and forest floor have different architectures, the structure of arthropod assemblages may vary by stratum. This has implications for forest management since long-term logging practices can change the composition and structure of northeastern North American forests, and arthropods are sensitive to these differences. While canopy sampling is becoming more common, the interaction between forest management and vertical stratification in temperate forests in North America has remained relatively unexplored. The objective of this thesis is to explore and quantify the structure of arthropod communities in two strata within the context of forest management (time-since harvest and silvicultural technique). I used beetles (Coleoptera) and spiders (Araneae), important components of forest ecosystems, to test effects of vertical stratification and forest management effects on biodiversity and community structure. I collected 586 species of beetles and spiders, representing 11 137 individuals, over two field seasons in a deciduous hardwood forest in Southern Québec. Beetle diversity was influenced by height, with the understorey harbouring a higher abundance and species richness than the upper canopy. Spider diversity was not affected by height or forest management. Both beetle and spider community compositions were strongly affected by height, with each stratum supporting a different community. Beetle assemblages differed between forest management sites (both time-since harvest and silvicultural technique treatments), but this was largely influenced by the Latridiidae, the most commonly collected family. Spider assemblages did not change with forest management treatment. Responses were taxon dependent, at both the Order and Family level. I suggest that ongoing biodiversity assessments and future ecological work in temperate forests should include canopy sampling, as omitting it might lead to an inaccurate representation of forest systems. Forest management should also be limited in frequency (time-since harvest) and intensity (silvicultural techniques), since canopy closure seems to be an important factor in shaping arthropod communities. " --

It comprises aspects of saproxylic beetle ecology, faunistics, diversity and conservation issues. International experts report on their activity, management strategies and new approaches in saproxylic insect conservation. There are a lot of people doing research on saproxylic beetles in different countries of the world, but this seems to be a little bit disorganized. Hopefully, these European conferences will lead to a better, more international network. The contributions included in this volume cover a broad spectrum of research on saproxylic beetles, organized in three main chapters: "Saproxylic beetle assemblages and regional surveys" include "Oaks in Norway," showing the abundance and composition of red-listed species of beetles in hollow oaks. Further reports on regional surveys deals with a spruce primeval forest in Romania, a hardwood floodplain forest in the Czech Republic, and the Gartow region of Lower Saxony, a hotspot of saproxylic beetle diversity in north-western Germany. "Saproxylic beetle ecology and implications for their conservation" deals with ecological studies of single species, e.g. Limoniscus violaceus, Lucanus cervus, Osmoderma eremita and the worldwide distribution of the genus Cucujus. "Advances in methodology and databases" discusses new techniques in trapping and the development of databases. This volume gives a nice overview of the actual research on saproxylic beetles in Europe and I wish the next conference in 2010 a successful meeting; maybe some people from the UK or even overseas should be invited.

Preventing the further destruction of forests and protecting species and ecosystems within forests have become central issues for environmental agencies, forest managers, and gove- ments. In this di?cult task science has an important role in informing policy and management as to how to go about this. So how do industrial and other pl- tation forests ?t into this? Plantation forests, comprised of rows of planted trees that may be destined for pulp or sawmills after only a few years of growth, appear to have little to c- tribute to the conservation of biodiversity. Yet there is more to this than meets the eye (of the casual observer), and there are indeed numerous opportunities, and often untapped potential, for biodiversity conservation in plantation forestry. With plantation forests expanding at a rate of approximately three million hectares per year, it is crucial to understand how plantations can make a positive contribution to biodiversity conservation and how the potentially negative impacts of this land use can be minimised. That is the topic of this book.
