This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-University Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: 1.0, , language: English, abstract: This study was undertaken to find out what are the common experiences of students in participating extra-curricular activities. Also this study aims to know on how students cope up the difficulties they’ve experienced while joining extra-curricular activities. Only fifteen selected students are involved in the research, thus we recommend that they must gather more respondents in order for them to generalize the views and experiences of the students for having an extra-curricular in school. Based on the data that we gathered from all of our respondents that are involved in extra-curricular activities, many of them share the same experiences regarding their participation on ECA. They gain experiences that positively affect them and can be used to improve and enhance not only their grades but their skills and their personality as a student and as a person. For all the students who have extra-curricular activities, researchers recommend that if they will involve to this kind of activity, they should balance their time management in order to not affect their academic performance. In addition, for students who wants to have extra-curricular activities, we recommend that they should prioritize their academics first before other things so that they could not suffer difficulties especially when it comes to projects, assignments and tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of soaring tuition costs, more and more students go to college every year. A bachelor’s degree is now required for entry into a growing number of professions. And some parents begin planning for the expense of sending their kids to college when they’re born. Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa’s answer to that question is a definitive no. Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, 45 percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills—including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing—during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise—instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list. Academically Adrift holds sobering lessons for students, faculty, administrators, policy makers, and parents—all of whom are implicated in promoting or at least ignoring contemporary campus culture. Higher education faces crises on a number of fronts, but Arum and Roksa’s report that colleges are failing at their most basic mission will demand the attention of us all.

Book excerpt: With over 70,000 copies of the first edition in print, this radical treatise on public education has been a New Society Publishers’ bestseller for 10 years! Thirty years in New York City’s public schools led John Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory schooling does little but teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. This second edition describes the wide-spread impact of the book and Gatto’s "guerrilla teaching." John Gatto has been a teacher for 30 years and is a recipient of the New York State Teacher of the Year award. Book An Examination of the Extracurricular Activity Participation Social Skills and School Engagement of Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

Download or read book An Examination of the Extracurricular Activity Participation Social Skills and School Engagement of Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders written by Sean Wachsmuth and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students with EBD have difficulties both academically and socially and experience poor outcomes compared to their peers with and without disabilities. Extracurricular activities are positively associated with improved academic performance, social interaction with peers and adults, and school engagement. The availability of extracurricular activities and the benefits associated with them make participation a potentially valuable addition to current interventions for students with EBD. The present study surveyed 80 students with EBD and 41 typical students about their involvement in school and community-based extracurricular activities as well as their social skill use and level of school engagement. Results supported previous research reporting that students with EBD participate in extracurricular activities at similar rates to typical students. Further, students with EBD who report participation in extracurricular activities scored higher on measures of social skills and school engagement than students with EBD who do not report participation. This study provides initial evidence that extracurricular activity participation may provide an avenue for students with EBD to improve behaviors related to academic performance, generalize and maintain skills they learn through social skills training programs, and increase their engagement with school which as a key component in reducing dropout. Limitations are presented along with implications for future research and practice.

Book Impact of Extracurricular Activity Involvement on Student Achievement at Three Tennessee Rural High Schools

Download or read book Impact of Extracurricular Activity Involvement on Student Achievement at Three Tennessee Rural High Schools written by Anthony James Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School leaders continue to try to find ways to improve students’ GPA and test scores. Research has shown that extracurricular activities can have a positive effect on academic achievement. This study aimed at finding the sweet spot of the amount of participation in extracurricular activities in order to maximize students’ GPA and test scores. Eleventh grade students from three rural East Tennessee high schools were sampled to determine the appropriate amount of level of involvement in extracurricular activities. Student transcripts were used to determine the GPA of the students at the end of their 11th grade year, as well as their ACT score for March test during 11th grade. Students were placed into one of four categories based on their level of participation in extracurricular activities: non-participants, participation in 1–2 activities, participation in 3–4 activities, and participation in 5 or more activities. This researcher found that there is a significant difference in ACT scores for students who participate in extracurricular activities. In addition, this study found that there is a significant difference in students’ GPA for students who participate in extracurricular activities. This study determined that the sweet spot for maximizing academic achievement is participating in 3–4 extracurricular activities; therefore, school officials need to encourage students to participate in multiple extracurricular activities.
