Download or read book Adiposity written by Jan Gordeladze and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in a series of two, featuring the Adiposity - Epidemiology and Treatment Modalities, serving as a summary of the traditional views on how the organ systems are affected when higher organs start to suffer from enhanced body weight, where most of this additional weight consists of white adipose tissue (WAT). The understanding of the "epidemiology" of obesity will consequently enable clinicians and researchers to better understand the untoward "trends" of "metabolic aberrations" from a well-organized and health-bringing homeostasis, with fully responding WAT and BAT, thus enabling a balance between fat-producing and fat-metabolizing tissues for the benefit of the various organ systems taking care of the fat and carbohydrate metabolism, normally yielding a balanced energy turnover, ensuring "healthy" cell phenotypes, which optimally coordinate the energy metabolism in a well-functioning organism throughout a lifetime.
Download or read book Nutrient Requirements of Laboratory Animals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-02-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since the third edition of this indispensable reference was published, a great deal has been learned about the nutritional requirements of common laboratory species: rat, mouse, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, and vole. The Fourth Revised Edition presents the current expert understanding of the lipid, carbohydrate, protein, mineral, vitamin, and other nutritional needs of these animals. The extensive use of tables provides easy access to a wealth of comprehensive data and resource information. The volume also provides an expanded background discussion of general dietary considerations. In addition to a more user-friendly organization, new features in this edition include: A significantly expanded section on dietary requirements for rats, reporting substantial new findings. A new section on nutrients that are not required but that may produce beneficial results. New information on growth and reproductive performance among the most commonly used strains of rats and mice and on several hamster species. An expanded discussion of diet formulation and preparationâ€"including sample diets of both purified and natural ingredients. New information on mineral deficiency and toxicity, including warning signs. This authoritative resource will be important to researchers, laboratory technicians, and manufacturers of laboratory animal feed.

Download or read book Control and Manipulation of Animal Growth written by P.J. Buttery and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control and Manipulation of Animal Growth explores the development and growth of animals. The reproductive system of animals is also discussed, along with how its development can be accelerated. The topic is presented using various studies by the authors together with a number of references to other books and studies. This book contains 20 chapters and revolves around the advancement of an animal's growth hormone. It explains how gender plays a part in an animal's development and talks about factors that can affect the process, such as environment, temperature, and food intake. This book also discusses bone growth, fetal growth, metabolism, factors of epidermal growth, growth manipulation, growth hormones, hormonal manipulation, and the effect of insulin. This text covers a wide range of facts and investigations and can therefore serve as an excellent reference for people who want to study an animal's internal and external development.

This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiences during early life program the central nervous- and endocrine-systems with consequences for susceptibility to physical and mental disorders. These programming effects depend on genetic and epigenetic factors, and their outcome leads to an adaptive or maladaptive phenotype to a given later environmental context. This Research Topic focused on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis and stress-related phenotypes, and on how HPA-axis programming by the environment precisely occurs. We included original research, mini-review and review papers on a broad range of topics related to HPA-axis programming.

Download or read book Metabolic Modifiers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, animal scientists have learned that administering recombinantly derived somatotropin (growth hormone) to cows improves milk production and that giving beta-adrenergic agonists to meat animals improves productivity and leanness. In order for these metabolic modifiers to yield benefits, however, sound management of the animals' nutrition is necessary. This volume reports on how these substances work in the animals' metabolism, what effects they might have on nutrient requirements of domestic livestock, and what information should be developed further by investigators. The book explores the current understanding of the biology, structure, mechanisms of action, and treatment effects of somatotropin, beta-adrenergic agonists, and anabolic steroids. A companion volume to the Nutrient Requirements of Domestic Animals series, this authoritative volume will be required reading for animal scientists, researchers, veterinarians, livestock farmers, and faculty and students in university animal veterinary science programs.

Download or read book Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism written by Raymond Dils and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-18 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulation of Fatty Acid and Glycerolipid Metabolism is a compilation of papers presented during the 11th Meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies in Copenhagen in 1977. The book deals with the regulation of enzyme activity and the turnover that results from fatty acid metabolism, lipid metabolism in membranes, and disturbed fatty acid metabolism. One study presented in the book shows that cellular fatty acid synthetase levels are significantly decreased by different medium and long chain fatty acids in Candida lypolytica, a kind of yeast. The book also examines the serious incidence of increase in the rate of conversion of glucose to fatty acids when white adipose tissues from rats are exposed to insulin. The selection addresses this increase as an important example of acute hormonal regulation of fatty acid synthesis in mammalian tissues. The text also describes the enzyme adaptation to nutritional and hormonal changes and the role of lipids in membrane fusion. The book presents other studies regarding the incidence of vascular, dietary, and congenital factors on fatty acid metabolism in adipose tissue and liver that are conducted in rats. Another study suggests that hyperinsulinemia is a key factor in the development of the obesity syndrome. Microbiologists, microchemists, and laboratory researchers and scientists dealing with fat metabolism will appreciate this book.
