Book Spanish specific Patterns and Nonword Repetition Performance in English Language Learners

Download or read book Spanish specific Patterns and Nonword Repetition Performance in English Language Learners written by María R. Brea-Spahn and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Nonword repetition tasks were originally devised to assess the efficiency of the phonological loop (Baddeley & Hitch, 1974), a component of the working memory system, where verbal information is temporarily stored and translated to support activities like phonological processing during early word-recognition (Snowling, 1981; Wagner et al., 2003), speech production (McCarthy & Warrington, 1984), and articulation (Watkins, Dronkers, & Vargha-Khadem, 2002; Yoss & Darley, 1974). From a practical perspective, there is a significant need for a systematically-designed Spanish nonword repetition measure that is equivalent to currently-available English measures. For this study, a database of nonwords that considered phonotactic and phonological properties of Spanish was devised. In a preliminary study, Spanish-speaking adults provided wordlikeness judgments about a large set of candidate nonwords. A subset of the rated nonwords was used in the development of a Spanish nonword repetition measure. The aim of the main experiment was to explore the contributions of participant factors (age, gender, and vocabulary knowledge) and item factors (word length, stress pattern, and wordlikeness) to Spanish repetition performance in this group of Spanish speaking, English language learning children. From a theoretical perspective, this investigation allowed a first observation of how experience with listening to and producing Spanish words influences the acquisition of Spanish-specific phonological patterns. A total of 68 children, ages four to six years with varying degrees of Spanish language knowledge participated in this study. Results revealed significant age and word length effects. However, stress pattern did not exert significant effects on repetition performance, which is not completely consistent with previous literature. That is, participants repeated nonwords from both the more frequent and the less frequent stress pattern with similar accuracy. Wordlikeness, a previously uninvestigated variable in nonword repetition was found to affect repetition accuracy. For all participants, nonwords rated as high in wordlikeness were more accurately repeated than were nonwords with low wordlikeness ratings. Findings of the study are discussed in terms of how they relate to working memory and usage-based models of phonological learning. Finally, the clinical relevance of nonword repetition in the assessment of coarse- and fine-grained mappings of phonological knowledge is suggested.

Book Cross language Neighborhood Density Effects in Early and Late Bilingual Word Recognition

Download or read book Cross language Neighborhood Density Effects in Early and Late Bilingual Word Recognition written by Amanda B. Lane and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this study, early and late English-Spanish bilinguals, who differed in experiences with their languages, responded to English and Spanish words in a progressive demasking task that differed by the number of orthographic neighbors (many or none) present in the other language. As expected, English words with many cross-language Spanish neighbors were responded to more slowly than English words with no cross-language Spanish neighbors. However, there was no significant difference in reaction times to Spanish words with many or no cross-language neighbors in English, which was unexpected." -- leaf v

Book Immersion Versus Primary Language Effects for Growth in Spanish and English Letter Word Identification Among Children Classrooms and Schools

Download or read book Immersion Versus Primary Language Effects for Growth in Spanish and English Letter Word Identification Among Children Classrooms and Schools written by Lee Branum-Martin and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study estimates program effects (English immersion versus primary language instruction using varying degrees of Spanish) upon English and Spanish word identification in the context of changing classrooms (cross-classification) from kindergarten through second grade. Letter-word identification is an important predictor of early reading achievement (Scarborough, 2001, 2005). In particular, the authors are interested in classroom and school differences not merely as noise to be removed, but as indicators of substantively important differences in implementation and practice. The student participants were 1,991 children (49% female) taught by 421 teachers across the 3 years of the longitudinal project, kindergarten to second grade. Seventy-five percent of the families reported earning less than $30,000 per year, and 79% had foreign-born fathers. Results suggest that in English, Spanish language instruction may facilitate the learning of English over time, as evidenced by the maintenance programs catching up to the English performance of the immersion programs. In Spanish letter-word identification, immersion programs show improving performance over time, but at a slower pace than the Spanish maintenance programs. These program-by-time interactions, however, are not completely correct and will require further verification. (Contains 4 figures and 3 tables.).

Book Taking a Closer Look at English Spanish Cognates in Word Recognition Among Second Language Learners and Bilinguals

Download or read book Taking a Closer Look at English Spanish Cognates in Word Recognition Among Second Language Learners and Bilinguals written by David Beard and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How second language learners represent and process cognates throughout development is an interesting area of inquiry to teachers, researchers, and learners alike. Cognates, as opposed to other word translations, are unique to learn in L2 because they share form (i.e. orthography, phonology, or morphology) and meaning, (i.e. semantics) with their L1 counterparts, essentially creating a class of words with special properties in bilingual memory. These special properties have yielded both facilitatory and inhibitory effects on bilingual visual word recognition in experimental conditions (Dijkstra et al. (1999)), as well as a lively debate on the nature of these results, (Sánchez-Casas & García-Albea (2005)). Although these experiments and debates have been productive, no consensus on the nature of the results has been reached, and almost no investigation has been conducted on how these effects develop in an L2 learner or heritage speaker. The purpose of this study is to address issues of lexical access and organization of cognates among both heritage speakers and L2 learners of Spanish in the United States. More specifically, we examined the effects that language (i.e. orthography and phonology) and cognition (e.g. intelligence, working memory, attention, and other cognitive variables) present to these populations in Cognate Recognition of English-Spanish cognates in Spanish. To better understand cognate recognition among these populations, we employed experimental and self-reporting paradigms designed to assess both language and cognitive related variables. Results show that cognates can be subdivided by orthographic and phonological features to form distinct perceptual categories in all groups of participants. Although the relationship is complex, in most cases orthography does facilitate reaction time in relation to phonology. Furthermore, individual differences do change throughout L2 lexical development and a few significant predictors of Cognate Recognition in Spanish are: attention, English vocabulary knowledge, spelling ability in English, number of L2 classes taken, and amount of time since last L2 class was taken.

Book Minority and Cross Cultural Aspects of Neuropsychological Assessment

Download or read book Minority and Cross Cultural Aspects of Neuropsychological Assessment written by F. Richard Ferraro and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minority and cross-cultural psychology is more relevant now than ever in our diverse world. Given the dramatic local and global changes occurring daily with regard to demographics, population changes, and immigration issues, minority and cross-cultural psychology is fast becoming a respected and critical area of scientific study. This new edition brings to the forefront recent developments by seasoned experts in the field. They offer up their newest projects in minority and cross-cultural aspects of neuropsychological assessment and are joined by new, up-and-coming professionals across a wide array of disciplines including psychology, medicine, and neuropsychology. Like the first edition, this updated collection sheds light on the ever-growing need for adequate neuropsychological assessment to a wider subset of individuals, crossing many cultural and minority barriers in the process. Continuously pushing the boundaries of neuropsychological assessment, this collection is essential reading for cognitive and clinical psychologists, and neuropsychologists, and a model text for advanced courses dealing with minority and cross-cultural issues.

Book Foreign Languages in Advertising

Download or read book Foreign Languages in Advertising written by Jos Hornikx and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive account of the use and effects of foreign languages in advertising. Based on consumer culture positioning strategies in marketing, three language strategies are presented: foreign language display to express foreignness, English to highlight globalness, and local language to appeal to ethnicity (for instance, Spanish for Hispanics in the USA). The book takes a multidisciplinary approach, integrating insights from both marketing and linguistics, presenting both theoretical perspectives (e.g., Communication Accommodation Theory, Conceptual Feature Model, Country-of-origin effect, Markedness Model, Revised Hierarchical Model) and empirical evidence from content analyses and experimental studies. The authors demonstrate that three concepts are key to understanding foreign languages in advertising: language attitudes, language-product congruence, and comprehension. The book will appeal to students and researchers in the fields of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, marketing and advertising.
