Book Effects of Corruption and Bad Leadership on Journalism in Nigeria

Download or read book Effects of Corruption and Bad Leadership on Journalism in Nigeria written by Odey Simon Robert and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Communications - Journalism, Journalism Professions, , language: English, abstract: The pervasive corruption and unceasing bad leadership in and among the Nigerian press have for long now ushered in various forms of professional compromise such as unethical and subjective journalism. The press, especially their leaders, having been influenced negatively by the macrocosmic institutionalised corruption and bad leadership of the political elite and their like, are becoming deeply immense in these nefarious misdeeds and unethical and subjective journalism. Consequently, the masses have lost confidence in them, and receive media contents with outright contempt and dissatisfaction. This paper thus calls for a change on the part of the press and the government, for which the masses would follow suit. Although the paper relies more on the secondary sources, the library print materials, controlled interview, observation and intuition of the primary sources of data collation were also involved. It is approached qualitatively, descriptively and objectively with the text-content analysis too.

Book A Culture of Corruption

Download or read book A Culture of Corruption written by Daniel Jordan Smith and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E-mails proposing an "urgent business relationship" help make fraud Nigeria's largest source of foreign revenue after oil. But scams are also a central part of Nigeria's domestic cultural landscape. Corruption is so widespread in Nigeria that its citizens call it simply "the Nigerian factor." Willing or unwilling participants in corruption at every turn, Nigerians are deeply ambivalent about it--resigning themselves to it, justifying it, or complaining about it. They are painfully aware of the damage corruption does to their country and see themselves as their own worst enemies, but they have been unable to stop it. A Culture of Corruption is a profound and sympathetic attempt to understand the dilemmas average Nigerians face every day as they try to get ahead--or just survive--in a society riddled with corruption. Drawing on firsthand experience, Daniel Jordan Smith paints a vivid portrait of Nigerian corruption--of nationwide fuel shortages in Africa's oil-producing giant, Internet cafés where the young launch their e-mail scams, checkpoints where drivers must bribe police, bogus organizations that siphon development aid, and houses painted with the fraud-preventive words "not for sale." This is a country where "419"--the number of an antifraud statute--has become an inescapable part of the culture, and so universal as a metaphor for deception that even a betrayed lover can say, "He played me 419." It is impossible to comprehend Nigeria today--from vigilantism and resurgent ethnic nationalism to rising Pentecostalism and accusations of witchcraft and cannibalism--without understanding the role played by corruption and popular reactions to it. Download or read book Nigeria written by John Campbell and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria, the United States’ most important strategic partner in West Africa, is in grave trouble. While Nigerians often claim they are masters of dancing on the brink without falling off, the disastrous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, the radical Islamic insurrection Boko Haram, and escalating violence in the delta and the north may finally provide the impetus that pushes it into the abyss of state failure. In this thoroughly updated edition, John Campbellexplores Nigeria’s post-colonial history and presents a nuanced explanation of the events and conditions that have carried this complex, dynamic, and very troubled giant to the edge. Central to his analysis are the oil wealth, endemic corruption, and elite competition that have undermined Nigeria’s nascent democratic institutions and alienated an increasingly impoverished population. However, state failure is not inevitable, nor is it in the interest of the United States. Campbell provides concrete new policy options that would not only allow the United States to help Nigeria avoid state failure but also to play a positive role in Nigeria’s political, social, and economic development.

Book Leadership Failure and Nigeria s Fading Hopes

Download or read book Leadership Failure and Nigeria s Fading Hopes written by Femi Okurounmu and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership Failure and Nigeria's Fading Hopes is a heart-rending lamentation by a patriotic Nigerian elder statesman, Femi Okurounmu, on how his country, through unbridled corruption and the selfishness of successive leaders, has dashed the hopes of not just Nigerians, but the entire black race and reinforced the prejudices of racists who raise doubts concerning the intellectual capacity of black people. The book consists of excerpts from a critical but constructive weekly column, Patriotic Punches which the author wrote between 2004 and 2009 in the Nigerian Tribune newspaper. It chronicles incidents of corruption in government, laments the corruption of the entire society and all its institutions and decries the enthronement of money as the national deity, such that its acquisition becomes the surest route to national recognition, no matter how it is acquired. It bemoans the fact that this conscienceless pursuit of money has eroded all of society's values, fostered a culture of corruption and criminality and led to the hijack of governance by a wealthy cabal, among them many criminals, who have provided a climate of impunity for the most horrendous levels of treasury looting by public officials, necessitating repeated rigging of elections to install protective successor leaders. The author is particularly distressed that the traditional watchdogs of public morality and probity - the judiciary, the media, religious leaders and institutions and traditional rulers - have all become mortally infected by the corruption. It calls on the citizenry to take their future into their own hands by shaking off their political lethargy and docility, abandoning their excessive and unreasonable fear of death, and mobilizing to confront bad governance and to ensure the emergence of a government that will fulfil the nation's early promise and give some credibility to the black man's claim to equality with other races of mankind.

Book excerpt: In 2015, building on the advances of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals that include an explicit commitment to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. However, enormous gaps remain between what is achievable in human health and where global health stands today, and progress has been both incomplete and unevenly distributed. In order to meet this goal, a deliberate and comprehensive effort is needed to improve the quality of health care services globally. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm: Improving Health Care Worldwide focuses on one particular shortfall in health care affecting global populations: defects in the quality of care. This study reviews the available evidence on the quality of care worldwide and makes recommendations to improve health care quality globally while expanding access to preventive and therapeutic services, with a focus in low-resource areas. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm emphasizes the organization and delivery of safe and effective care at the patient/provider interface. This study explores issues of access to services and commodities, effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and equity. Focusing on front line service delivery that can directly impact health outcomes for individuals and populations, this book will be an essential guide for key stakeholders, governments, donors, health systems, and others involved in health care.

Book Corruption in Africa

Download or read book Corruption in Africa written by John Mukum Mbaku and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption in Africa makes a significant contribution to the study of the impacts and eradication of corruption in African societies. John Mukum Mbaku offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes of public malfeasance in African countries and provides a number of practical and effective policy options for change. This book demonstrates the destructive relationship between corruption and the abrogation of economic freedoms and entrepreneurship, a system that has clearly left Africa as one of the most deprived regions in the world. Utilizing the tools of public choice theory, Mbaku emphasizes the important role that institutions have in corruption control and he recommends reconstructive democratic constitutions as the most effective means of development. Until African states provide their people with institutional arrangements that adequately constrain the state and enhance wealth production, the living standards in the continent will continue to deteriorate. Corruption in Africa is a fascinating and informative text that will appeal to those interested in African studies and developmental policies.

Book Corruption and Nigeria s External Image 1999 2007

Download or read book Corruption and Nigeria s External Image 1999 2007 written by Oluwasola Abiola and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 3.0, , course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: In Nigeria, corruption is one of the many unresolved problems that have robbed the nation of development. It remains a long-term major political and economic challenge for Nigeria. According to Alabi and Fashagba, Nigeria's search for enduring socio-economic, political and technological development as well as efficient and productive utilization of allocated have been undermined by pervasive corrupt practices in the polity. One cannot talk about Nigeria and neglect the reality of corruption in the country, and this is why the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo (1999 and 2007) gained unprecedented global attention on account of its unenviable record of corruption, especially in the political circles of the country. This is not to suggest that corruption in the country started with the Obasanjo administration in 1999, rather it is to emphasize how intensified corruption cases have been since the beginning of the Fourth Republic. The level of corruption in the country is very high, and its effects on the external image of the country is nothing closed to positive. The Nigerian state is a state dominated by the forces of corruption, especially the corrupt elites who has turned the resources of the Nigerian state into what is now popularly referred to as the “national cake” which they share as they like among themselves at the detriment of the masses, this further confirms the words of Ogbewere that corruption is a clog in the wheel of progress in Nigeria and has incessantly frustrated the realization of noble national goals, despite the enormous natural and human resources in Nigeria. The political elites ever since independence of the Nigerian state have not stopped to enrich their own personal pockets with the country’s luxuries while hiding under the façade of fighting corruption in their respective political offices. This further explains why the Nigerian elites have so much interest in the political affairs of the state and in some way have turned it into a business venture rather than a serving avenue. The much reason Remi Chukwudi Okeke and Adeline Nnenna Idike made it known that indeed, in very simple and clear terms, the monumental enumerations indict the Nigerian elite in its generic connotations. It typifies the scenario of elites establishing an inverse relationship between the institutionalization of a state and its usefulness.

Book Fighting Corruption Is Dangerous

Download or read book Fighting Corruption Is Dangerous written by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A frontline account of how to fight corruption, from Nigeria's former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. In Fighting Corruption Is Dangerous, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has written a primer for those working to root out corruption and disrupt vested interests. Drawing on her experience as Nigeria's finance minister and that of her team, she describes dangers, pitfalls, and successes in fighting corruption. She provides practical lessons learned and tells how anti-corruption advocates need to equip themselves. Okonjo-Iweala details the numerous ways in which corruption can divert resources away from development, rewarding the unscrupulous and depriving poor people of services. Okonjo-Iweala discovered just how dangerous fighting corruption could be when her 83-year-old mother was kidnapped in 2012 by forces who objected to some of the government's efforts at reforms led by Okonjo-Iweala—in particular a crackdown on fraudulent claims for oil subsidy payments, a huge drain on the country's finances. The kidnappers' first demand was that Okonjo-Iweala resign from her position on live television and leave the country. Okonjo-Iweala did not resign, her mother escaped, and the program of economic reforms continued. “Telling my story is risky,” Okonjo-Iweala writes. “But not telling it is also dangerous.” Her book ultimately leaves us with hope, showing that victories are possible in the fight against corruption.
