Book Effects of Continuous Vs Rotational Grazing of Adult Horses on Cool Season Grasses in Southwest Missouri

Download or read book Effects of Continuous Vs Rotational Grazing of Adult Horses on Cool Season Grasses in Southwest Missouri written by Crystal J. Duey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some grazing methods can negatively affect water quality through increased phosphorus runoff, causing eutrophication of surface water bodies. High stocking density and poor forage stands can increase these problems. Rotational grazing schemes have shown promise in increasing forage stands and vegetative buffers. There is little information available involving the effects of equine grazing on a rotational grazing scheme. During 2007 and 2008, cool season grasses were grazed by horses of light horse breeding to determine the effects of rotational and continuous grazing methods, during the summer growing season. Plate meter readings were taken to determine available forage, grass clippings were taken from a 0.0929 m2 area to determine dry matter and calibrate the plate meter. The rotational grazing system showed higher available forage between the two treatments (P_0.01) for both years. However, year and interaction effects were not significant (P0.05).

Book The Effects of Rotational and Continuous Grazing on Horses Pasture Condition and Soil Properties

Download or read book The Effects of Rotational and Continuous Grazing on Horses Pasture Condition and Soil Properties written by Laura Beth Kenny and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rotational grazing tends be recommended over continuous grazing for its potential improvements to forage quality, yield, and animal gain. However, work comparing these grazing systems using horses is sparse, and it is not appropriate to utilize findings from other livestock species due to differences in equine physiology and grazing behavior. The present study examined the effects of grazing system on horse condition, vegetation attributes, and soil properties for one year. The first objective was to evaluate four methods for estimating plant species composition. Each method agreed with each other method well enough to be used interchangeably. The second objective was to compare the effects of rotational and continuous grazing on horse and pasture condition. Horses were not affected by grazing system, but pasture condition was strongly affected with rotational pastures exhibiting higher production and ground cover than continuous pastures. The third objective was to evaluate the effects of rotational and continuous grazing on soil chemical, physical, and hydraulic properties. It was found that grazing system had no effect on soil fertility, bulk density, or hydraulic conductivity. Overall, these findings support the recommendation of rotational grazing for improved pasture condition, but do not offer evidence of improved horse or soil condition over continuous grazing.

Book The Effects of Rotational Grazing and Prescribed Burning on Bobwhite Populations in South Texas

Download or read book The Effects of Rotational Grazing and Prescribed Burning on Bobwhite Populations in South Texas written by Marcia H. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hort-term effects of 3 grazing systems and prescribed burning on bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations were investigated on the Welder Wildlife Refuge near Corpus Christi, Texas, during spring (April through June) and fall (September through October) of 1976 and 1977. Two rotational systems, high intensity-low frequency (HILF) and four-pasture, deferred-rotation (4PDR), and a continuously grazed system (CONT) were initiated in 1975. Prescribed burning was executed in December of 1975. Each of the grazing systems was represented by 1 pasture; 2 study areas (16 ha each) were selected within a pasture. Two burned areas (12 ha each) and an unburned area (12 ha) were located in a 4PDR pasture. On all 9 study areas, herbaceous cover (grass, forb, dead and bare ground) by life form was sampled with a point frame. Quail population indices were determined from 4 methods: number of quail observed along transects, trapping success, flush censuses, and total number of calls recorded ("bob-white" in spring and roost call in fall). During the spring of 1976, significantly more "bob-white" calls were recorded in HILF than in the other 2 systems (P=0.024). Remaining comparisons of population indices did not yield significant differences among the 3 grazing systms. Nevertheless, a trend developed in which quail used the HILF most frequently and used the 4PDR least often. Preference for the HILF pasture probably occurred in response to the small amount of grass cover, relatively large amounts of bare ground and forb cover, particularly of a tall life form. As a result, long-term research is necessary to determine the effects of grazing systems on vegetation and therefore, on quail populations. After winter burning, significantly more "bob-white" calls (P

Book Horse Pasture Management

Download or read book Horse Pasture Management written by Paul H. Sharpe and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horse Pasture Management begins with coverage of the structure, function and nutritional value of plants, continuing into identification of pasture plants. Management of soil and plants in a pasture is covered next, followed by horse grazing behavior, feed choices of horses, management of grazing horses, and how to calculate how many horses should be grazing relative to land size. Management of hay and silage are included, since year-round grazing is not possible on many horse farms. A number of chapters deal with interactions of a horse farm with the environment and other living things. As an aid in good pasture management, one chapter explains construction and use of fencing and watering systems. Contributions are rounded out with a chapter explaining how the University of Kentucky helps horse farm managers develop their pasture management programs. - The purpose of the book is to help people provide a better life for horses - Provides the basic principles of pasture management for those involved in equine-related fields and study - Covers a variety of strategies for managing the behavior, grouping, environmental, and feeding needs of grazing horses to ensure high levels of welfare and health - Includes information on environmental best practices, plant and soil assessment, and wildlife concerns - Explains pasture-related diseases and toxic plants to be avoided - Includes links to useful resources and existing extension programs
