Book Seismic Performance of Flared Bridge Columns

Download or read book Seismic Performance of Flared Bridge Columns written by Anthony V. Sánchez and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a joint analytical and experimental research program which investigated the influence that flares have on the structural behavior of columns. The program also verified the potential seismic performance issues associated with flared columns. Ten model columns were constructed and tested in two phases, upside down, as simple cantilevers. The columns featured both large and heavily reinforced structural flares or small, light reinforced, non- structural flares. A prismatic reference column, as-built/as-designed column, and retrofit/improved flare designs were tested for both phases. Practical solutions for analyzing, design, and retrofitting flared columns are proposed, based on this research.

Book Seismic Performance of Circular Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Varying Axial Load

Download or read book Seismic Performance of Circular Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Varying Axial Load written by Gianmario Benzoni and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of four circular reinforced concrete bridge columns, with different axial load regimes, is investigated. The first unit was tested under constant compressive axial load corresponding to an axial load ratio of 0.35. The second specimen was subjected to a constant tensile axial force equivalent to 0.087 axial load ratio. Two specimens were tested under varying regime of axial load, ranging between the two previous load limits, in order to simulate realistic seismic conditions of outer columns of multi-column bents. Extended comparison between experimental and predicted shear response, from different current equations, is provided.

Book Next Generation of Bridge Columns for Accelerated Bridge Construction in High Seismic Zones

Download or read book Next Generation of Bridge Columns for Accelerated Bridge Construction in High Seismic Zones written by Mostafa Tazarv and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal bar debonding allowed spread of yielding and prevented premature failure of reinforcements in UHPC-filled duct connections and grouted coupler column pedestal. The SMA-reinforced ECC column showed superior seismic performance compared to a conventional column in which the plastic hinge damage was limited to only ECC cover spalling even under 12% drift ratio cycles. The column residual displacements were 79% lower than CIP residual displacements on average due to the superelastic NiTi SMA longitudinal reinforcement, and higher base shear capacity and higher displacement capacity were observed. The analytical modeling methods were simple and sufficiently accurate for general design and analyses of precast components proposed in the present study. The proposed symmetrical material model for reinforcing NiTi superelastic SMA was found to be a viable alternative to the more complex asymmetrical model.
