Book excerpt: Many primary studies have been performed to reveal the effects of computer assisted instruction (CAI) on students' attitudes towards science courses. In determining the effectiveness of these studies, gathering and evaluating of the studies at some characteristics play an important role. The aim of this study is to determine meta-analytically the overall effectiveness of CAI on students' attitudes towards science courses from the years 2000 to 2007 in Turkey. This paper reported the results of 23 effect sizes included in 17 studies, since some studies performed multiple comparisons within the same study. The overall number of subject was 1583. Grand mean for 23 ESs was calculated as 0,68. When this mean ES was converted to percentiles, the percentiles on students' attitudes towards science course were 75 for the CAI group and 50 for TI group. In other words, an average student's attitude towards science course moved from the 50th percentile to the 75th percentile when computer assisted instruction was used. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of the computer-assisted and computer-based instructional methods on students achievement at computer classes and on their attitudes towards using computers. The study, which was completed in 6 weeks, were carried out with 94 sophomores studying in formal education program of Primary Teaching Department of Education Faculty at Trakya University. The participants were distributed into experimental and control groups by pre-test post-test control group design. A computer attitude scale, a level-designation test and a practice test were used to collect the data. To evaluate the data, t test was used in the program of SPSS 12.00. According to the study results, the students receiving computer-assisted instruction during their computer classes showed higher success on the practice test than the students taking classes with computer-based instructional methods. Additionally, a considerable difference has not been seen in the attitude of the students towards using computers from the other standpoints of the study. (Contains 1 figure and 4 tables.) Book excerpt: Designing new models requires the educators to observe the educational settings in which computer assisted instruction (CAI) was implemented successfully. This paper proposes a CAI model for middle and high schools in Turkey based on the observations and interviews in K-12 schools in Arizona, USA in which computer technologies are implemented successfully. The model consists of three major components, which include: (1) CAI in the one-computer classroom, (2) CAI in the multiple-computer classroom, and (3) CAI in separate computer laboratories. Each component is subdivided into two components: needs of the teacher and needs of the students. The present model provides an initial listing of suggested knowledge bases and skills that appear to be minimums for teachers and students at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels of knowledge and skills. By providing flexibility in the area of teacher and student needs, the model serves as a framework to guide decision making at the national level in Turkey. Appendices include: (A) list of schools in which CAI applications were observed; (B) observation form; (C) list of the interviewees; (D) interview questions answered by directors of academic services information systems & technology offices in the school districts; (E) interview questions answered by the school principals and/or computer coordinators; (F) interview questions answered by teachers and/or media specialists; (G) a sample of observation record; and (H) samples of structured interviews.
