Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between communication and perceived organizational support. The site of the study was a state university with a population of 27,000 students, and 10,000 faculty/staff members. A questionnaire was administered to the University Police Department, assessing perceived organizational support and six communication related items. The results indicate a number of communication areas of concern in the organization at study. These include the amounts of information received and desired on a variety of topics, information sent regarding the evaluation of an immediate supervisor(s), timeliness of information received from a variety of sources, and effectiveness of face-to-face, telephone and e-mail communication. The findings support previous research indicating that communication from immediate supervisors, middle management, and top management correlate strongly with levels of perceived support.

Perceived organizational support-employees' perception of how much an organization values their contribution and cares about their well-being-mutually benefits both employees and their organizations and is integral to sustainable employer–employee relationships. Using organizational support theory and evidence gathered from hundreds of studies, Eisenberger and Stinglhamber demonstrate how perceived organizational support affects employees' well-being, the positivity of their orientation toward the organization and work, and behavioral outcomes favorable to the organization. The authors illustrate these findings with employee experiences and strategic approaches of major organizations such as Southwest Airlines, Wal-Mart, Costco, and Google. Organizational psychologists, management consultants, managers, and graduate students will obtain a clear understanding of perceived organizational support and the practical knowledge needed to foster its development and positive outcomes.

Book excerpt: Researchers have identified employee affective commitment as a key indicator of variables that are of great interest to organizations (Mowday, Porter, & Steers, 1982). Teamwork behaviors have been identified as predictors of affective commitment (Meyer, Stanley, Herscovitch, & Topolnytsky, 2002). However, very few studies have examined the moderating effect organizational and supervisor support may have on these relationships. The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of perceived organizational support and perceived supervisor support on the relationship between teamwork behaviors and affective commitment. Results of a survey administered to 3,926 employees in a medical device company revealed that both perceived organizational support and perceived supervisor support significantly moderated the relationship between teamwork behaviors and affective commitment, suggesting that employees who experience more cooperation, communication, and collaboration (teamwork behaviors) report higher levels of affective commitment when they feel their contributions are valued by their organizations and supervisors. It is suggested that organizations focus on increasing perceptions of organizational support and supervisor support because support moderates the relationship between teamwork behaviors and affective commitment.

Book excerpt: Organizations are constantly evaluating methods and looking for new ways to improve retention. Perceived Organizational Support (POS) is used as a predictor of intent to stay; therefore, it is important to know what behaviors lead to greater POS. Understanding this will enable organizations to coach their leaders on styles that are most effective so they can make the best use of their time. This study focused specifically on supervisor-employee engagements, evaluating the correlation between perceived leadership communication and POS, and the significance of modality. The study concluded that perceived leadership communication was positively correlated with POS. Of the five communication modalities considered, face-to-face communication, videoconferences, phone conversations, texts/IMs, and e-mails, only face-to-face was positively correlated to POS, both phone and e-mail were negatively correlated. Because some teams or individuals do not have face-to-face as an option due to geography, the geographic makeup of the team was also a consideration. Team dispersion by city or individual office location did not moderate the relationship between perceived leadership communication and POS; however, team dispersion by time zones was a negative moderator on perceived leadership communication on POS. These findings may be used to assist supervisors in communication modality selection and aid human resource leaders in organizational structuring and team compositions to maximize opportunity for POS.

The main purpose of this study is to identify the effects of poor communication on organizational performance and to find out the strategies for improving on communication at the workplace so that employee motivation can be enhanced. The specific objectives of the study included finding out the factors, levels, types and effects of poor communication at the workplace. The study was guided by the writings of Elashmawi and Harris, (1993) who have argued that a fuller understanding of organizations is a vital ingredient at every forward step of the career process, and that communication is a primary element for understanding how organizations function and how members of the organization should, even must, behave in organizations if they are to advance their careers. The study was carried out at the Kenya Seed Company Limited. A sample of 300 respondents was involved in the research and they were picked through random stratified sampling save for seven heads of departments who were purposefully selected by virtue of their positions and possession of key information. This sample was deemed representative enough as the total number of workers is 3000. The research used both questionnaires and interviews schedules. Data was analyzed and presented using descriptive statistics methods. Excel was used to come up with this analysis. To analyze and determine the magnitude of poor communication and good channels of proper communication, the findings of the study will help KSC Ltd and other organizations to improve on communication. This in turn will improve the employee motivation and general organizational performance.
