Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to investigate the long-term impacts of bypasses on small- and medium-sized communities in Indiana. Interviews were conducted with community officials and individuals familiar with the history of each bypassed community. Statistical models were developed to analyze economic impacts across a number of key indicators including payroll and employment in various industry sectors. Lessons learned from this study vary from county to county and across industry sectors. The findings of this study will be used to develop a concise guide that will provide guidance to both Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) officials and community officials as to how to best adapt to the presence of the bypass.

  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2018-11-22
  • ISBN : 1108619150
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Institutional Bypasses written by Mariana Mota Prado and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutional bypass is a reform strategy that creates alternative institutional regimes to give citizens a choice of service provider and create a form of competition between the dominant institution and the institutional bypass. While novel in the academic literature, the concept captures practices already being used in developing countries. In this illuminating book, Mariana Mota Prado and Michael J. Trebilcock explore the strengths and limits of this strategy with detailed case studies, showing how citizen preferences provide a benchmark against which future reform initiatives can be evaluated, and in this way change the dynamics of the reform process. While not a 'silver bullet' to the challenge of institutional reform, institutional bypasses add to the portfolio of strategies to promote development. This work should be read by development researchers, scholars, policymakers, and anyone else seeking options on how to promote change and implement reforms in developing countries around the world.

Book Methodology for Determining the Impact of Highway Bypasses in Oklahoma

Download or read book Methodology for Determining the Impact of Highway Bypasses in Oklahoma written by Cynthia Louise Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project No. 2150 develops a methodology for determining the impact of highway bypasses on small town business districts in Oklahoma. The focus is predicting likely impacts of proposed bypasses on US 70. Economic impacts are measured by comparing changes in the sales tax base in the bypassed cities with those of in similar non-bypassed cities. Quasi-experimental control group and difference-in-difference estimation techniques are employed. The method is demonstrated by analyzing the 1993 bypass of Stonewall as well as bypasses of Rush Springs and Snyder in the early 1970s. The null hypothesis that the bypasses had no impact on city sales taxes cannot be rejected. The results are not conclusive due to a lack of bypass cases and usable data on traffic volumes and composition, residential property values, regional economic performance and business climate during the pre-bypass period.

Book Redo Cardiac Surgery in Adults

Download or read book Redo Cardiac Surgery in Adults written by V.R. Machiraju and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 204 pages. Book excerpt: Redo cardiac surgeries are challenging cases with a myriad of influential factors, ranging from the patient's pathology to the whimsy of the previous surgeon. Redo Cardiac Surgery in Adults, 2nd Edition clearly outlines practical approaches, surgical techniques, and management of associated conditions such as perioperative stroke and acute kidney function. It covers the spectrum of redo cardiac operations, including coronary artery bypass, mitral valve repair, reoperation for prosthetic mitral valve endocarditis, aortic arch reoperation, descending and thoracoabdominal aortic reoperation, and reoperations following endovascular aortic repair. All redo cardiac surgeries present a complex array of challenges beyond what the original procedure demands. This book, written by an outstanding group of prominent physicians, will give the reader the knowledge and tools to approach these cases with confidence.

Book Economic Effects of Highway Bypasses on Business Activities in Small Cities

Download or read book Economic Effects of Highway Bypasses on Business Activities in Small Cities written by Reijo Helaakoski and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an analysis of the effects of highway bypasses on the business activities of a sample of small Texas cities. An initial explanatory analysis (using a before-and-after method, matched pairs, and projected development) did not reveal a significant relationship between highway bypass construction and a change in business volumes. It can be concluded that business volumes in the more rapidly growing cities with imperfect infrastructure and relatively high local traffic benefit from highway bypass construction. On the other hand, initial econometric modeling demonstrated that a highway bypass can have a statistically significant negative effect on business volumes in the small Texas cities that were studied. The results of the econometric modeling show that the way in which a business community responds to a highway bypass is complex. The major factor determining business volumes is the city's population.

Book Nitrates III

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06

Download or read book Nitrates III written by P. Lichtlen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacological and clinical research on nitrates continues to be of growing interest in many centers. This is surprising in view of the fact that their favorable effects in angina pectoris were described by Brunton and by Murrell in the Lancet more than 100 years ago. As expected, a host of new information has been collected since the two previous symposia on nitrates held in Stockholm in 1975 and Berlin in 1978. New insights were gained into the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of nitrates, as well as into their clinical effects in acute and chronic ischemic heart diseases and in severe congestive heart failure. Relatively little progress, however, was observed in research into the basic action of nitrates. Although most investigators agree that intracellular sequestration of calcium is probably the main mechanism by which nitrates lead to the reduction of vascular smooth muscle tone, the exact site of their action still remains undefined. In contrast, dose-dependent differences in venous and arteriolar tone have long been clearly established. Treatment was again in the main stream of discussion. The question of tolerance following long-term administration was discussed in depth and the term "pseudotolerance" was introduced to describe the adaptation of the body's circulatory system to chronic vasodilation. This is especially important in long term prophylactic antiischemic treatment in stable, as well as in unstable angina pectoris (i.e. during increased vasomotor tone - spasm).
