Book Merger Efficiency and Competition in Malaysian Banking Industry

Download or read book Merger Efficiency and Competition in Malaysian Banking Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past efficiency studies on bank mergers had tended to focus only on those that were motivated by market incentives. The 1999 wave of bank mergers in Malaysia offered a unique opportunity to look into the efficiency effect of bank mergers that were not market-driven. The mergers were largely involuntary following a directive by Bank Negara Malaysia for several groups of banks to merge as single entities. There was also some concern that previous studies had been methodologically unsound by estimating separate frontiers for the pre and post merger periods.

Book Does Operating Performance Really Improve Following Mergers The Case of Malaysian Banks

Download or read book Does Operating Performance Really Improve Following Mergers The Case of Malaysian Banks written by Wan Mansor Mahmood and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines whether the recent bank mergers in Malaysia did create synergies as reflected in corporate operating performance measures. Four accrual operating performance measures are used, i.e. Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Profit Margin (PM), and Earnings Per Share (EPS). Using a sample of eight anchor banks for a sample period beginning 1997 through 2002, the results show that bank mergers had a significant post-merger improvement that is consistent with the findings of Neely and Rochester (1987) who also employed accrual performance measures in their study on savings and loan institutions in the US. The findings suggest that even though the mergers are 'forced' in nature, it can contribute to synergistic benefits. The gain in the post-merger operating performance was mainly due to the provisions for loan loss, which on average was much lower during the post-merger period compared to the pre-merger period. The study also finds that there is insignificant continuance of pre-merger performance into the post-merger period.

Book Bank Mergers Acquisitions

Download or read book Bank Mergers Acquisitions written by Yakov Amihud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-02-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the financial services industry becomes increasingly international, the more narrowly defined and historically protected national financial markets become less significant. Consequently, financial institutions must achieve a critical size in order to compete. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions analyses the major issues associated with the large wave of bank mergers and acquisitions in the 1990's. While the effects of these changes have been most pronounced in the commercial banking industry, they also have a profound impact on other financial institutions: insurance firms, investment banks, and institutional investors. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions is divided into three major sections: A general and theoretical background to the topic of bank mergers and acquisitions; the effect of bank mergers on efficiency and shareholders' wealth; and regulatory and legal issues associated with mergers of financial institutions. It brings together contributions from leading scholars and high-level practitioners in economics, finance and law.

Book Efficiency and Productivity Effects of Bank Mergers

Download or read book Efficiency and Productivity Effects of Bank Mergers written by Anthony N. Rezitis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acquisition activity on the efficiency and total factor productivity of Greek banks. A stochastic output distance function is used to construct a generalized output Malmquist productivity index based on the methodological framework of Orea [Orea, L., 2002. Parametric decomposition of a Generalized Malmquist Productivity Index. Journal of Productivity Analysis 18, 5-22]. The results of the present study indicate that the effects of mergers and acquisition on technical efficiency and total factor productivity growth of Greek banks are rather negative. In particular, the technical efficiency of merger banks decreased in the period after merging, while that of non-merger banks increased over the same period. Furthermore the decrease in total factor productivity for merger banks for the period after merging can be attributed to an increase in technical inefficiency and the disappearance of economies of scale, while technical change remained unchanged compared to the pre-merging level.

Download or read book The Wealth Effect of Forced Bank Mergers and Cronyism written by Beng Soon Chong and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the impact of forced bank mergers on the shareholders' wealth of Malaysian banks. Forced bank mergers, which are the result of direct government intervention in the consolidation of the banking industry, are generally rare. Unlike the findings on voluntary mergers and acquisitions, our study shows that the forced merger scheme destroys economic value in aggregate and the acquiring banks tend to gain at the expense of the target banks. Further analysis shows that the contrasting forced merger finding is linked to cronyism.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an investigation into the relationship between the announcement of mergers and acquisition and the existence of positive abnormal returns for shares of these firms. The aim of this project is to examine the impact of Merger and Acquisition on the stock prices of Indian Banks by using the Event Study Methodology; it is one of the most frequently used tools in financial research. The objective of Event Study is to assess whether there are any abnormal or excess returns earned by security holders accompanying specific events (e.g. merger announcements, earnings announcements, stock splits), where an abnormal return is the difference between observed return and appropriate return by stock market during a particularly defined event window. In order to analyse the effect of announcement of bank's Merger and Acquisition on stock price, we have considered four cases of Mergers in banking sector. In this study, we tested our results by analysing the daily return of the event windows and compare with average pe-riod return of security. By accepting the abnormal return as a benefit of the acquisition and investors of Acquirer Company received profit in term of share value appraisal. We observed that acquirer got benefit by the acquisition deals and it reflect through the excess return over the normal return of bank's share prices. In last 10 to 15 years banking industry passed through different scenario and to compete in this scenario some banks acquired other banks to improve their own market cap and financial conditions with expanding market by acquisition. The purpose of this study is to figure out the effect of the acquisition on the share capitalization value of the Acquirer Company and abnormal return due to the acquisition. This paper is based upon the secondary data analysis of the acquirer company share prices movements in respect of the market index price movements.
