Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation involved implementing various self-assessment practices and evaluated the impacts on student achievement, self-confidence and mastery of science concepts. The study included 30 eighth grade students with academic abilities ranging from below to above grade level. This research was conducted at Washington Middle School in Missoula, Montana. The treatment was implemented over the course of four physical science units spanning from November through February. Student achievement was assessed by analyzing class participation, unit test scores and Assignment and Effort Tracking Sheets. Student attitudes were evaluated through the pre and post-treatment data from the Student Attitude Inventory and Course-Related Self-Confidence Survey.

Book Male and Female Middle School Students Attitudes Toward Science

Download or read book Male and Female Middle School Students Attitudes Toward Science written by Micheele Lynn Schpakow and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women continue to be underrepresented in certain disciplines of science. Differences in male and female students’ attitudes toward science have been observed down to the middle school level. Attitudes, however, may be formed through the integration of multiple constructs: attitudes toward school science, desire to become a scientist, value of science to society, and perceptions of scientists. To fully understand the problem of the underrepresentation of females in science, differences in male and female middle school students’ attitudes toward science were analyzed across these constructs. A causal-comparative design was used to compare students’ attitudes toward science based on biological sex. The students responded to Likert-type items on the My Attitudes Toward Science survey during their regularly scheduled science class periods. The sample included sixth, seventh, and eighth grade science students in middle schools located in suburban central New Jersey. Data analysis was performed through a multivariate analysis of variance. The findings indicated no significant difference exists in middle school students’ attitudes toward school science, desire to become a scientist, value of science to society, and perceptions of scientists based on biological sex of the students.

Book Attitudes Interests and Perceived Self efficacy Toward Science of Middle School Minority Female Students

Download or read book Attitudes Interests and Perceived Self efficacy Toward Science of Middle School Minority Female Students written by Ana Lucrecia Dowey and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underparticipation of minority females in STEM fields has been a chronic problem in the United States, mainly when it is analyzed through the lens of their relative representation in the population. The results of the first or quantitative phase, of this two phase sequential, mixed method study, revealed academic achievement or performance in science accounted for most of the variance of mean scores for students' attitudes and interests in science as measured by the TOSRA Likert-scale survey, when compared to the degree of parent education and ethnicity/ racial background. Additionally, this study investigated possible sources of perceived self-efficacy in eighteen seventh grade Hispanic female students by conducting personal semi-structured interviews. The purpose of this study was to explore if middle school female student ethnic/racial backgrounds and academic performance influence their attitudes and interests toward science and to study the possible effects external (family, school, peers, and community) and internal factors may have for Hispanic student self-efficacy toward science. The results revealed that of the five ethnic/racial groups studied, Asian/Filipino female students expressed higher positive attitudes and interests toward science, than the rest of the student ethnic groups studied, followed by the Hispanic student group. The results indicated that students' perceived encouragement from their mothers, regardless of the mother's degree of education, as being the main source of these girls'perceived self-efficacy in science. However, the lack of perceived school-related, peer-related, and community-related support was evident. These results are encouraging because they demonstrate how verbal persuasion, in the form of encouragement and support, fosters perceived self-efficacy for minority female students.
